The traditional harmonic excitation method was modified to estimate 16 dynamic force coefficients of two misaligned journal bearings. To avoid the effects of different running conditions on the estimated coefficients, two harmonic forces with different frequencies were excited on the rotor simultaneously and all data were acquired during one test run. The excitation forces and their displacement responses were transferred to the frequency domain in which eight linear (complex) equations are derived. All 16 bearing force coefficients can then be obtained by solving these simultaneous linear equations through one operation. Applicable experimental procedures and data processing techniques are presented. The force coefficients of two circular journal bearings with two axial grooves each are estimated and correlate well with theoretical values when misalignment is considered. Various experimental errors are discussed and the uncertainty in the estimated coefficients is analyzed.

The characteristics of two misaligned journal bearings were experimentally studied. A bearing test rig was developed. The experimental journal was freely alignable in two possibly misaligned journal bearings. In Part 1, the static characteristics, such as the distributions of oil film thickness and the pressure and temperature of two misaligned bearings, are measured; the relationships of eccentricity, attitude angle, and side flow to the Sommerfeld number are experimentally determined. In Part 2, the traditional harmonic excitation method is extended to estimate the sixteen dynamic force coefficients of two misaligned journal bearings. Sixteen force coefficients of two circular journal bearings, each with two axial grooves, are estimated and the threshold stable speeds are predicted. Various experimental errors and the uncertainty of the estimated coefficients are analyzed.

Recent comprehensive experimental data showcasing the force coefficients of commercial size tilting pad journal bearings has brought to rest the long standing issue on the adequacy of the [K,C,M] physical model to represent frequency independent bearing force coefficients, in particular viscous damping. Most experimental works test tilting pad journal bearings (TPJBs) with large preloads, operating over a large wide range of rotor speeds, and with null to beyond normal specific loads. Predictions from apparently simple fluid film bearing models stand poor against the test data which invariably signals to theory missing pivot and pad flexibility effects, and most importantly, ignoring significant differences in bearing and pad clearances due to actual operation, poor installation and test procedures, or simply errors in manufacturing and assembly. Presently, a conventional thermo hydrodynamic bulk flow model for prediction of the pressure and temperature fields in TPJBs is detailed. The model accounts for various pivot stiffness types, all load dependent and best when known empirically, and allows for dissimilar pad and bearing clearances. The algorithm, reliable even for very soft pad-pivots, predicts frequency reduced bearing impedance coefficients and over a certain frequency range delivers the bearing stiffness, damping and virtual mass force coefficients. Good correlation of predictions against a number of experimental results available in the literature bridges the gap between a theoretical model and the applications. Predicted pad reaction loads reveal large pivot deflections, in particular for a bearing with large preloaded pads, with significant differences in pivot stiffness as a function of specific load and operating speed. The question on how pivot stiffness acts to increase (or decrease) the bearing force coefficients, in particular the dynamic stiffness versus frequency, remains since the various experimental data show contradictory results. A predictive study with one of the test bearings varies its pivot stiffness from 10% of the fluid film stiffness to an almost rigid one, 100 times larger. With certainty, bearings with nearly rigid pivot stiffness show frequency independent force coefficients. However, for a range of pad pivot stiffness, 1/10 to ten times the fluid film stiffness, TPJB impedances vary dramatically with frequency, in particular as the excitation frequency grows above synchronous speed. The bearing virtual mass coefficients become negative, thus stiffening the bearing for most excitation frequencies.

As gas foil journal bearings become more prevalent in production machines, such as small gas turbine propulsion systems and microturbines, system level performance issues must be identified and quantified in order to provide for successful design practices. Several examples of system level design parameters that are not fully understood in foil bearing systems are thermal management schemes, alignment requirements, balance requirements, thrust load balancing, and others. In order to address some of these deficiencies and begin to develop guidelines, this paper presents a preliminary experimental investigation of the misalignment tolerance of gas foil journal bearing systems. Using a notional gas foil bearing supported rotor and a laser-based shaft alignment system, increasing levels of misalignment are imparted to the bearing supports while monitoring temperature at the bearing edges. The amount of misalignment that induces bearing failure is identified and compared to other conventional bearing types such as cylindrical roller bearings and angular contact ball bearings. Additionally, the dynamic response of the rotor indicates that the gas foil bearing force coefficients may be affected by misalignment.

Abstract Seals in multiple phase rotordynamic pumps must operate without compromising system efficiency and stability. Both field operation and laboratory experiments show that seals supplied with a gas in liquid mixture (bubbly flow) can produce rotordynamic instability and excessive rotor vibrations. This paper advances a nonhomogeneous bulk flow model (NHBFM) for the prediction of the leakage and dynamic force coefficients of uniform clearance annular seals lubricated with gas in liquid mixtures. Compared to a homogeneous BFM (HBFM), the current model includes diffusion coefficients in the momentum transport equations and a field equation for the transport of the gas volume fraction (GVF). Published experimental leakage and dynamic force coefficients for two seals supplied with an air in oil mixture whose GVF varies from 0 (pure liquid) to 20% serve to validate the novel model as well as to benchmark it against predictions from a HBFM. The first seal withstands a large pressure drop (~ 38 bar) and the shaft speed equals 7.5 krpm. The second seal restricts a small pressure drop (1.6 bar) as the shaft turns at 3.5 krpm. The first seal is typical as a balance piston whereas the second seal is found as a neck-ring seal in an impeller. For the high pressure seal and inlet GVF = 0.1, the flow is mostly homogeneous as the maximum diffusion velocity at the seal exit plane is just ~0.1% of the liquid flow velocity. Thus, both the NHBFM and HBFM predict similar flow fields, leakage (mass flow rate) and drag torque. The difference between the predicted leakage and measurement is less than 5%. The NHBFM direct stiffness (K) agrees with the experimental results and reduces faster with inlet GVF than the HBFM K. Both direct damping (C) and cross-coupled stiffness (k) increase with inlet GVF < 0.1.Compared to the test data, the two models generally under predict C and k by ~ 25%. Both models deliver a whirl frequency ratio (fw) ~ 0.3 for the pure liquid seal, hence closely matching the test data. fw raises to ~0.35 as the GVF approaches 0.1. For the low pressure seal the flow is laminar, the experimental results and both NHBFM and HBFM predict a null direct stiffness (K). At an inlet GVF = 0.2, the NHBFM predicted added mass (M) is ~30 % below the experimental result while the HBFM predicts a null M. C and k predicted by both models are within the uncertainty of the experimental results. For operation with either a pure liquid or a mixture (GVF = 0.2), both models deliver fw = 0.5 and equal to the experimental finding. The comparisons of predictions against experimental data demonstrate the NHBFM offers a marked improvement, in particular for the direct stiffness (K). The predictions reveal the fluid flow maintains the homogeneous character known at the inlet condition.

Abstract The Aki-Larner method is one of the cheapest methods for synthetic seismograms in irregularly layered media. In this article, we propose a new approach for a two-dimensional SH problem, solved originally by Aki and Larner (1970). This new approach is not only based on the Rayleigh ansatz used in the original Aki-Larner method but also uses further information on wave fields, i.e., the propagation invariants. We reduce two coupled integral equations formulated in the original Aki-Larner method to a single integral equation. Applying the trapezoidal rule for numerical integration and collocation matching, this integral equation is discretized to yield a set of simultaneous linear equations. Throughout the derivation of these linear equations, we do not assume the periodicity of the interface, unlike the original Aki-Larner method. But the final solution in the space domain implicitly includes it due to use of the same discretization of the horizontal wavenumber as the discrete wavenumber technique for the inverse Fourier transform from the wavenumber domain to the space domain. The scheme presented in this article is more efficient than the original Aki-Larner method. The computation time and memory required for our scheme are nearly half and one-fourth of those for the original Aki-Larner method. We demonstrate that the band-reduction technique, approximation by considering only coupling between nearby wavenumbers, can accelerate the efficiency of our scheme, although it may degrade the accuracy.

To determine the bifurcation types in a rotor-bearing system, it is required to find higher order derivatives of the bearing forces with respect to journal velocity and position. As closed-form expressions for journal bearing force are not generally available, Hopf bifurcation studies of rotor-bearing systems have been limited to simple geometries and cavitation models. To solve this problem, an alternative nonlinear coefficient-based method for representing the bearing force is presented in this study. A flexible rotor-bearing system is presented for which bearing force is modeled with linear and nonlinear dynamic coefficients. The proposed nonlinear coefficient-based model was found to be successful in predicting the bifurcation types of the system as well as predicting the system dynamics and trajectories at spin speeds below and above the threshold speed of instability.
