The fundamental theory of wire ropes developed by Costello and Phillips is utilized to obtain closed-form expressions for maximum contact stresses in single strand cables with fibrous cores. These should be useful for gaining an insight into the influence of various parameters of the cable as well as the material properties on its strength and hence design.

Although a significant amount of research on robot joint reducer was conducted, there are few systematic investigations on a novel joint reducer adopting inner worm-gear plane enveloping drum worm drive. To satisfy the development of modular robot joint, the primary objective of this paper was to systematically investigate the drum worm drive adopted in the novel joint reducer with integrated structure of drive, transmission, and support in the following aspects: meshing theory, design, analysis, and manufacture. According to the gear meshing theory, mechanical design method, classical mechanics, finite element method, and machining principle of virtual center distance, the systematic investigations around the drum worm pair applied in the novel joint reducer were conducted including the macro and micro meshing theory, structure design, mechanical and contact properties analyses, and manufacturing method. The novel joint reducer’s integrated structure was designed, and the drum worm pair’s mechanical and contact properties analyses were conducted, which showed: (1) the worm’s bending stress and deflection, worm-gear teeth’s shear stress and bending stress as well as the maximum contact stresses were all below their corresponding allowable values; (2) the maximum contact stresses appeared at the engage-in position of the worm pair opposing to the engaging-out position where the largest contact areas appeared. Then the manufacturing of drum worm’s spiral tooth was conducted via the modified 4-axis linkage CNC grinder according to the conjugate motion. Finally the novel joint reducer’s industrial prototype was assembled. The novel joint reducer with integrated structure of drive, transmission and support was designed and manufactured for the first time. The flowchart of design and manufacture of the reducer’s drum worm pair in this process was formulated, which provides a new insight on the research of joint reducers as well as other fields.

AbstractDerivatives of equations of motion (EOM) describing the dynamics of rigid body systems are becoming increasingly relevant for the robotics community and find many applications in design and control of robotic systems. Controlling robots, and multibody systems comprising elastic components in particular, not only requires smooth trajectories but also the time derivatives of the control forces/torques, hence of the EOM. This paper presents the time derivatives of the EOM in closed form up to second-order as an alternative formulation to the existing recursive algorithms for this purpose, which provides a direct insight into the structure of the derivatives. The Lie group formulation for rigid body systems is used giving rise to very compact and easily parameterized equations.

A closed form solution to the flow of resin in vacuum assisted resin transfer molding process (VARTM) has been derived. VARTM is used extensively for affordable manufacturing of large composite structures. During the VARTM process, a highly permeable distribution medium is incorporated into the preform as a surface layer. During infusion, the resin flows preferentially across the surface and simultaneously through the preform giving rise to a complex flow front. The analytical solution presented here provides insight into the scaling laws governing fill times and resin inlet placement as a function of the properties of the preform, distribution media and resin. The formulation assumes that the flow is fully developed and is divided into two regimes: a saturated region with no crossflow and a flow front region where the resin is infiltrating into the preform from the distribution medium. The flow front region moves with a uniform velocity. The law of conservation of mass and Darcy’s Law for flow through porous media are applied in each region. The resulting equations are nondimensionalized and are solved to yield the flow front shape and the development of the saturated region. It is found that the flow front is parabolic in shape and the length of the saturated region is proportional to the square root of the time elapsed. The results thus obtained are compared to data from full scale simulations and an error analysis of the solution was carried out. It was found that the time to fill is determined with a high degree of accuracy while the error in estimating the flow front length, d, increases with a dimensionless parameter ε=K2xxh22/K2yyd2. The solution allows greater insight into the process physics, enables parametric and optimization studies and can reduce the computational cost of full-scale 3-dimensional simulations. A parametric study is conducted to establish the sensitivity of flow front velocity to the distribution media/preform thickness ratio and permeabilities and preform porosity. AbstractKinematic alignment (KA), which co-aligns the rotational axes of the components with three kinematic axes of the knee by aligning the components to the prearthritic joint lines, has been a recently introduced surgical technique. However, whether KA and cruciate retaining (CR) implants provide better biomechanical function during activities than mechanical alignment (MA) in posterior stabilized (PS) implants is unclear. We evaluated the biomechanical functions during the stance phase gait and deep knee bend, with a computer simulation and measured forces in the medial and lateral collateral ligaments and medial and lateral contact stresses in the polyethylene insert and patellar button. The forces on the medial collateral ligament in KA were lower than those in MA in both CR and PS TKA in the stance phase gait and deep knee bend conditions, whereas those on the lateral collateral ligament did not show any difference between the two surgical alignment techniques in the stance phase gait condition. The maximum contact stresses on the medial PE inserts in KA were lower than those in MA in both CR and PS TKA in the stance phase gait and deep knee bend conditions. However, the maximum contact stresses on the lateral PE inserts and the patellar button did not differ between MA and KA. The biomechanical function was superior in KA TKA than in MA TKA, and KA was more effective in CR TKA. This comparison could be used as a reference by surgeons to reduce the failure rates by using KA TKA instead of MA TKA.


The demands made on materials in contemporary design are increasingly stringent. Materials and design methods have evolved to meet them. However, it is proving increasingly difficult to extend current design methods, largely based on continuum modelling and empiricism, to cope with the larger number of variables that appear in many engineering applications. It is argued that atomistic modelling (which, by itself, seldom leads to engineering solutions) can give additional insight into the form of constitutive equations, the grouping of variables, and the magnitudes of material properties. Properly interpreted, this information can point the way to a ‘model-informed ' empiricism that can help solve pressing engineering problems.

Aided Inertial Navigation Systems (INS) systems are commonly implemented in land vehicles for a variety of applications. Several methods have been reported in the literature for evaluating aided INS performance. Yet, the INS error-state-model dependency on time and trajectory implies that no closed-form solutions exist for such evaluation. In this paper, we derive analytical solutions to evaluate the fusion performance. We show that the derived analytical solutions manage to predict the error covariance behavior of the full aided INS error model. These solutions bring insight into the effect of the various parameters involved in the fusion of the INS and an aiding sensor.

We present a multimodal ferrule-top sensor designed to perform the integrated epidetection of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) depth-profiles and micron-scale indentation by all-optical detection. By scanning a sample under the probe, we can obtain structural cross-section images and identify a region-of-interest in a nonhomogeneous sample. Then, with the same probe and setup, we can immediately target that area with a series of spherical-indentation measurements, in which the applied load is known with a [Formula: see text]N precision, the indentation depth with sub-[Formula: see text]m precision and a maximum contact radius of 100[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]m. Thanks to the visualization of the internal structure of the sample, we can gain a better insight into the observed mechanical behavior. The ability to impart a small, confined load, and perform OCT [Formula: see text]-scans at the same time, could lead to an alternative, high transverse resolution, Optical Coherence Elastography (OCE) sensor.

The peak junction temperature has a profound effect on the operational lifetime and performance of high powered microwave devices. Although numerical analysis can help to estimate the peak junction temperature, it can be computationally expensive and time consuming when investigating the effect of the device geometry and material properties on the performance of the device. On the other hand, a closed-form analytical method will allow similar studies to be done easily and quickly. Although some previous analytical solutions have been proposed, the solutions either require over-long computational times or are not so accurate. In this paper, an accurate closed-form analytical solution for the junction temperature of power amplifier field effect transistors (FETs) or monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) is presented. Its derivation is based on the Green's function integral method on a point heat source developed through the method of images. Unlike most previous works, the location of the heat dissipation region is assumed to be embedded under the gate. Since it is a closed-form solution, the junction temperature as well as the temperature distribution around the gate can be easily calculated. Consequently, the effect of various design parameters and material properties affecting the junction temperature of the device can be easily investigated. This work is also applicable to multifinger devices by employing superposition techniques and has been shown to agree well with both numerical and experimental results.
