Energy Losses at Tees With Large Area Ratios

The loss coefficients for smooth, sharp-edged tees of circular cross-section with the area ratio of 11.44 were determined experimentally for five branch angles which ranged from 45 deg to 135 deg giving special consideration to all configurations of flow through the tees. The Reynolds number, in the leg carrying the combined flow, was kept to a constant value, i.e., 105 for the branch pipe and 3×104 for the main pipe, respectively. The equations for loss coefficients developed from the continuity, energy, and momentum principles give good agreement with the experimental results for tees with large area ratios provided that correction factors are introduced. The correction factors were determined by the analysis of the experimental data with the relative uncertainties from 0.9 to 3.3% according to the configurations of flow. The results constitute a useful guide to the determination of the loss coefficients for tees with large area ratios.

Abstract The solubility of 99Tc(IV) was investigated from undersaturation conditions in NaCl–Na2SO4 (0.3 M ≤ I ≤ 5.0 M), MgCl2–MgSO4 (I = 13.5 M) and CaCl2–CaSO4 (I = 13.5 M) systems with 0.001 M ≤ [SO4 2−]tot ≤ 1.0 M and 1 ≤ pH m  ≤ 12 (with pH m  = −log[H+], in molal units). Reducing conditions were set by either Sn(II) or Fe(0). Special efforts were dedicated to accurately characterize the correction factors A m required for the determination of pH m from the experimentally measured pH values in the mixed salt systems investigated, with pH m  = pHexp + A m . The combination of (pe + pH m ) measurements with Pourbaix diagrams of Tc suggests that technetium is present in its +IV redox state. This hypothesis is confirmed by XANES, which unambiguously shows the predominance of Tc(IV) both in the aqueous and solid phases of selected solubility samples. XRD and SEM–EDS support the amorphous character of the solid phase controlling the solubility of Tc(IV). EXAFS data confirm the predominance of TcO2(am, hyd) at pH m  > 1.5, whereas the formation of a Tc(IV)–O–Cl solid phase is hinted at lower pHm values in concentrated NaCl–Na2SO4 systems with ≈5 M NaCl. Solubility data collected in sulfate-containing systems are generally in good agreement with previous solubility studies conducted in sulfate-free NaCl, MgCl2 and CaCl2 solutions of analogous ionic strength. Although the complexation of Tc(IV) with sulfate cannot be completely ruled out, these results strongly support that, if occurring, complexation must be weak and has no significant impact on the solubility of Tc(IV) in dilute up to highly saline media. Solubility upper-limits determined in this work can be used for source term estimations including the effect of sulfate in a variety of geochemical conditions relevant in the context of nuclear waste disposal.

Context. Individual distances to planetary nebulae are of the utmost relevance for our understanding of post-asymptotic giant-branch evolution because they allow a precise determination of stellar and nebular properties. Also, objects with individual distances serve as calibrators for the so-called statistical distances based on secondary nebular properties. Aims. With independently known distances, it is possible to check empirically our understanding of the formation and evolution of planetary nebulae as suggested by existing hydrodynamical simulations. Methods. We compared the expansion parallaxes that have recently been determined for a number of planetary nebulae with the trigonometric parallaxes provided by the Gaia Data Release 2. Results. Except for two out of 11 nebulae, we found good agreement between the expansion and the Gaia trigonometric parallaxes without any systematic trend with distance. Therefore, the Gaia measurements also prove that the correction factors necessary to convert proper motions of shocks into Doppler velocities cannot be ignored. Rather, the size of these correction factors and their evolution with time as predicted by 1D hydrodynamical models of planetary nebulae is basically validated. These correction factors are generally greater than unity and are different for the outer shell and the inner bright rim of a planetary nebula. The Gaia measurements also confirm earlier findings that spectroscopic methods often lead to an overestimation of the distance. They also show that even modelling of the entire system of star and nebula by means of sophisticated photoionisation modelling may not always provide reliable results. Conclusions. The Gaia measurements confirm the basic correctness of the present radiation-hydrodynamics models, which predict that both the shell and the rim of a planetary nebula are two independently expanding entities, created and driven by different physical processes, namely thermal pressure (shell) or wind interaction (rim), both of which vary differently with time.

A method for predicting cooling air flow rates using tests on cylindrical models of typical turbine blade leading edges has been extended to include blades with inserts and blades with reversed-angled holes. When an insert is used, the pressure loss across the insert can be determined from flow tests and added to other losses in the flow path to determine cooling flow rates. Calculated and experimentally determined flow rates are compared with good agreement. The second experiment was performed to determine internal loss coefficients for reverse-angled holes oriented so the flow makes a reverse turn to enter the holes. The reversed flow case produced significantly greater internal loss coefficients than when the same holes were oriented in the direction of flow. These results were used to predict flow from arrays of reverse- angled holes and from a cylinder containing both reverse-angled holes and nonreversed holes. In all cases, good agreement was found between predicted and measured flow rates.

An investigation of the “additional” total pressure losses occurring in combining flow through several sharp-edged three-leg junctions has been made. Experimental results covering a wide speed range up to choking are presented for three flow geometries of a lateral branch off a straight duct using dry air as the working fluid. A new theoretical flow model provided results in fairly good agreement with the experimental data obtained. Flow visualization of the high-speed flow using the Schlieren method revealed the presence of normal shock waves in the combined flow about one duct diameter downstream of the junction. The highest attainable Mach number (M3) of the averaged downstream (combined) flow was 0.66 for several of the flow geometries. This value of M3 appears to be the maximum possible and is the result of a combination of flow separation and local flow choking.

In a preceding article theoretical methods were derived for correcting the integrated absorbance values of microscopic objects determined with a scanning stage cytophotometer for the systematical erros due to residual distributional error, diffraction error, and glare error. For an experimental investigation of these results, the local apparant transmission at the center of an opaque particle was determined and this value used as a measure for the substage glare. By sufficient reduction of the size of the illuminated field, this substage glare could be kept below 1% in our scanning stage cytophotometer. The magnitude of the diffraction error was experimentally approached by comparing the values found for the integrated absorbance of the same amount of chromophore, dispersed over two different areas by crushing or centrifugation. After appropriate correction for the residual distributional error, the remaining difference was ascribed to the diffraction error, caused by diffraction at the edges of the object, and to the glare error, present all over the measured area. The local borderline corrections found necessary to obtain the best matching corrected integrated absorbance values were between 3 and 5%, in good agreement with the value derived theoretically. The importance of these corrections for the determination of the integrated absorbance of common biological objects is discussed.

ABSTRACT Oestrogens administered in lower doses than necessary to induce full cornification of the mouse vagina induce mucification. It was shown previously that the degree of mucification could be estimated by quantitative determination of sialic acids. A suitable parameter for oestrogen assay was the measurement of vaginal sialic acid concentration which exhibited a clear cut dose response curve. Eleven assays of various oestrogens were performed with this method. Their estimated relative potencies were in good agreement with other routine oestrogen assays. A statistically sufficient degree of precision was found. The sensitivity was of the same order, or slightly higher, than the Allen-Doisy test.

In this study, we have investigated the surface analysis and optoelectronic properties on the synthesis of N-CNT/TiO2 composites thin films, using sol gel method for a dye synthetized solar cell (DSSC) which is found to be simple and economical route. The titanium dioxide based solar cells are an exciting photovoltaic candidate; they are promising for the realization of large area devices. That can be synthetized by room temperature solution processing, with high photoactive performance. In the present work, we stated comparable efficiencies by directing our investigation on obtaining Sol Gel thin films based on N-CNT/TiO2, by dispersing nitrogen (N) doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) powders in titanium tetraisopropoxyde (TTIP). The samples were assessed in terms of optical properties, using UV—visible absorption spectroscopic techniques. After careful analysis of the results, we have concluded that the mentioned route is good and more efficient in terms of optoelectronic properties. The gap of “the neat” 0.00w% N-CNT/TiO2 is of 3eV, which is in a good agreement with similar gap of semiconductors. The incorporated “w%NCNTs” led to diminishing the Eg with increasing N-CNTs amount. These consequences are very encouraging for optoelectronic field.

Abstract A completely automated analysis is described for the determination of serum calcium with glyoxal bis (2-hydroxyanil) solution (GBHA). The method is simple and precise, and the data obtained are in good agreement with results obtained by the manual GBHA procedure.

The hydrodynamic characteristics of the planing hulls in particular at the planing regime are completely different from the conventional hull forms and the determination of these characteristics is more complicated. In the present study, calm water hydrodynamic characteristics of planing hulls are investigated using a hybrid method. The hybrid method combines the dynamic trim and sinkage from the Zarnick approach with the Savitsky method in order to calculate the total resistance of the planing hull. Since the obtained dynamic trim and sinkage values by using the original Zarnick approach are not in good agreement with experimental data, an improvement is applied to the hybrid method using a reduction function proposed by Garme. The numerical results obtained by the hybrid and improved hybrid method are compared with each other and available experimental data. The results indicate that the improved hybrid method gives better results compared to the hybrid method, especially for the dynamic trim and resistance. Although the results have some discrepancies with experimental data in terms of resistance, trim and sinkage, the improved hybrid method becomes appealing particularly for the preliminary design stage of the planing hulls.
