The coupled translation-rotation vibratory response of hypoid geared rotor system due to loaded transmission error excitation is studied by employing a generalized 3-dimensional dynamic model. The formulation includes the effects of backlash nonlinearity as well as time-dependent mesh position and line-of-action vectors. Its mesh coupling is derived from a quasi-static, 3-dimensional, loaded tooth contact analysis model that accounts for the precise gear geometry and profile modifications. The numerical simulations show significant tooth separation and occurrence of multi-jump phenomenon in the predicted response spectra under certain lightly loaded operating conditions. Also, resonant modes contributing to the response spectra are identified, and cases with super-harmonics are illustrated. The computational results are then analyzed to quantify the extent of non-linear and time-varying factors.

The Transmission Error and Bearing Pattern of a gear set are fundamental aspects of its meshing behavior. To assess the validity of gear simulation models, the Transmission Error and Bearing Pattern of a Formate Hypoid gear set are measured under a variety of operating positions and applied loads. Measurement data are compared to simulation results of Tooth Contact Analysis and Loaded Tooth Contact Analysis models, and show excellent agreement for the considered test gear set. In this study, an optimization methodology is proposed to systematically define the optimal head-cutter geometry and machine-tool settings to simultaneously minimize the tooth contact pressure and angular displacement error of the driven gear (the transmission error), and to reduce the sensitivity of face-hobbed spiral bevel gears to the misalignments. The proposed optimization procedure relies heavily on the loaded tooth contact analysis for the prediction of tooth contact pressure distribution and transmission errors influenced by the misalignments inherent in the gear pair. The load distribution and transmission error calculation method employed in this study were developed by the author of this paper. The targeted optimization problem is a nonlinear constrained optimization problem, belonging to the framework of nonlinear programming. In addition, the objective function and the constraints are not available analytically, but they are computable, i.e., they exist numerically through the loaded tooth contact analysis. For these reasons, a nonderivative method is selected to solve this particular optimization problem. That is the reason that the core algorithm of the proposed nonlinear programming procedure is based on a direct search method. The Hooke and Jeeves pattern search method is applied. The effectiveness of this optimization was demonstrated on a face-hobbed spiral bevel gear example. Drastic reductions in the maximum tooth contact pressure (62%) and in the transmission errors (70%) were obtained.

Energy efficiency and functional reliability are the two key requirements in the design of high-performance transmissions. Therefore, a representative analysis replicating real operating conditions is essential. This paper presents the thermoelastohydrodynamic lubrication (TEHL) of meshing spur gear teeth of high-performance racing transmission systems, where high generated contact pressures and lubricant shear lead to non-Newtonian traction. The determination of the input contact geometry of meshing pairs as well as contact kinematics are essential steps for representative TEHL. These are incorporated in the current analysis through the use of Lubricated Loaded Tooth Contact Analysis (LLTCA), which is far more realistic than the traditional Tooth Contact Analysis (TCA). In addition, the effects of lubricant and flash surface temperature rise of contacting pairs, leading to the thermal thinning of lubricant, are taken into account using a thermal network model. Furthermore, high-speed contact kinematics lead to shear thinning of the lubricant and reduce the film thickness under non-Newtonian traction. This comprehensive approach based on established TEHL analysis, particularly including the effect of LLTCA on the TEHL of spur gears, has not hitherto been reported in literature.

As one of the long period gear errors, the effects of random cumulative pitch deviations on mesh excitations and vibration responses of a helical geared rotor system (HGRS) are investigated. The long-period mesh stiffness (LPMS), static transmission error (STE), as well as composite mesh error (CMS), and load distributions of helical gears are calculated using an enhanced loaded tooth contact analysis (LTCA) model. A dynamic model with multi degrees of freedom (DOF) is employed to predict the vibration responses of HGRS. Mesh excitations and vibration responses analysis of unmodified HGRS are conducted in consideration of random cumulative pitch deviations. The results indicate that random cumulative pitch deviations have significant effects on mesh excitations and vibration responses of HGRS. The curve shapes of STE and CMS become irregular when the random characteristic of cumulative pitch deviations is considered, and the appearance of partial contact loss in some mesh cycles leads to decreased LPMS when load torque is relatively low. Vibration modulation phenomenon can be observed in dynamic responses of HGRS. In relatively light load conditions, the amplitudes of sideband frequencies become larger than that of mesh frequency and its harmonics (MFIHs) because of relatively high contact ratio. The influences of random cumulative pitch deviations on the vibration responses of modified HGRS are also discussed.

A practical method based on normal gaps topography is proposed here for loaded tooth contact analysis of WN gear having tooth surface deviations. The simulation of meshing state and tooth strength of WN gear are provided with real tooth surfaces. In the study normal gaps distribution is adopted to calculate tooth surface contact elastic deformation and local deviations due to manufacturing errors and tooth surface wear. For WN gear, the loaded distribution on the contact zone in meshing tooth surface has not been investigated because of their complexity in the contact state. The finite element method is adopted to analyze the contact pattern and tooth strength. The study has concretely calculated the contact pressure and zone of meshing in different loaded and transmission error. At the end examples are analyzed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in quantifying effect of such deviations on the loaded distribution and tooth stress distribution.

According to the principle of tri-branching, a mechanism structural model was developed to analyze the helical gear transmission system. On the base of loaded tooth contact analysis (LTCA), the load transmission error of each gear stage is simulated at the any engagement position, and the fitting curves of the torsion mesh stiffness are obtained, which can improve the numerical precision. The research results can be applied to analyze the actual application of tri-branching transmission system and provide a firm foundation for study the power-split and load-sharing characteristics.

A double direction modification with a grinding worm is applied on tooth surface of face gear drive. The surface equations of the rack cutter, shaper and grinding worm are derived respectively. Loaded tooth contact analysis (LTCA) with finite element method (FEM) is performed to investigate the meshing performance of face gear drive before modification and after modification. The modification by a grinding worm can obviously reduce the sensitivity of face gear drive to misalignment; the bending stress and the contact stress are reduced with avoiding edge contact; the load transmission error is reduced. This method can obtain a more stable bearing contact in contrast to the method by increasing tooth number of shaper, and the modification magnitude can be controlled freely. The investigation is illustrated with numerical examples.

In the research of gear transmission, the vibration and noise problem has received many concerns all the times. Scholars use tooth modification technique to improve the meshing state of gearings in order to reduce the vibration and noise. However, few of researchers consider the influence of measured manufacturing errors when they do the study of tooth modification. In order to investigate the efficiency of the tooth modification in the actual project, this paper proposes a dynamic model of a helical gear pair including tooth modification and measured manufacturing errors to do a deterministic analysis on the dynamical transmission performance. In this analysis, based on the measured tooth deviation, a real tooth surface (including modification and measured tooth profile error) is fitted by a bicubic B-spline. With the tooth contact analysis (TCA) and loaded tooth contact analysis (LTCA) on the real tooth surface, the loaded transmission error, tooth surface elastic deformation, and load distribution can be determined. Based on the results, the time-varying mesh stiffness and gear mesh impact are computed. Taking the loaded transmission error, measured cumulative pitch error, eccentricity error, time-varying mesh stiffness, and gear mesh impact as the internal excitations, this paper establishes a 12-degree-of-freedom (DOF) dynamic model of a helical gear pair and uses the Fourier series method to solve it. In two situations of low speed and high speed, the gear system dynamic response is analyzed in the time and frequency domains. In addition, an experiment is performed to validate the simulation results. The study shows that the proposed technique is useful and reliable for predicting the dynamic response of a gear system.

An approach of ease-off flank modification for hypoid gears was proposed to improve the meshing performance of automobile drive axle. Firstly, a conjugate pinion matching with gear globally was developed based on gear meshing theory. Secondly, a modified pinion was represented by a sum of two vector functions determining the conjugate pinion and the normal ease-off deviations expressed by both predesigned transmission error function and tooth profile modification curves to change the initial contact clearance of the tooth. Thirdly, the best ease-off deviations were determined by optimizing the minimum amplitude of loaded transmission error (ALTE) based on tooth contact analysis (TCA) and loaded tooth contact analysis (LTCA). Finally, the results show that effective contact ratios (εe) are established by clearances both teeth space and of contact elliptical, and greatly affect ALTE. The εe is a variable value with increasing loads for the tooth with modification. ALTE decreases with increasing εe. After εe reaches the maximum, ALTE increases with increasing loads. The mismatch of the best ease-off tooth is minimal, which contributes to effective reduction in ALTE, thus significantly improving drive performance.

China Bearing Reducer (CBR) is a one-stage cycloid speed reducer, which has the advantages of large transmission ratio, large load, high precision, high stiffness, and compact structure. The profile modification quality and manufacturing error of cycloid gear are the key factors affecting the transmission accuracy. In this paper, the structure of CBR is introduced first. By means of tooth contact analysis, a new parabolic profile modification method is proposed to improve the transmission accuracy. Then, by using Hertzian contact theory, force equilibrium equations and deformation compatibility conditions, a loaded tooth contact analysis algorithm of CBR is proposed to analyze the loaded transmission characteristics. According to the designed manufacturing error, the objective function is established to minimize the transmission error under nonload condition, and the particle swarm optimization algorithm is used to solve the optimal modification coefficients. Finally, the CBR25 is manufactured with the optimum modification coefficients, and the manufacturing error is measured in coordinate measuring machine to verify that it meets the design requirements. The optimal modification coefficients of CBR25 under nonload are solved based on particle swarm optimization model. Then the optimal modification coefficients are substituted to loaded tooth contact analysis to analyze the meshing contact force, contact deformation, and transmission error of CBR25. The transmission error of the CBR25 is tested on the testing rig. The error between the measured results and the calculated results of loaded tooth contact analysis is within 5%, which shows the correctness of the loaded tooth contact analysis algorithm. At the same time, the operation stability of the CBR25 is improved by using the optimal modification method.
