Global dynamics behavior of a damped flexible connecting rod is considered in this paper with emphasis on the effects of the rigid crank length. Nonlinear equations of motion in terms of axial and transverse deflections are derived based on Lagrangian strain formulation. When the crank length is small compared to the connecting rod, it is found that only one periodic solution exists in the speed range up to 1.5 times the first bending natural frequency of the connecting rod. As the crank length increases, however, multiple solutions may exist and the associated domains of attraction can be identified by cell-to-cell mapping technique. Moreover, the steady state response may become chaotic, which renders precise prediction of the dynamics response meaningless. The onset rotation speed of chaotic vibration decreases when the crank length increases. This result shows that previous research utilizing simplified or linearized models can predict the dynamics response of the flexible connecting rod only when both the crank length and the rotation speed are small.

Previous researches on the dynamic response of a flexible connecting rod can be categorized by the ways the axial load in the rod is being formulated. The axial load may be assumed to be (1) dependent only on time and can be obtained by treating the rod as rigid, (2) related to the transverse displacement by integrating the axial equilibrium equation, and (3) proportional to linear strain. This paper examines the validity of these formulations by first deriving the equations of motion assuming the axial load to be proportional to the Lagrangian strain. In order for the dimensionless displacements to be in the order of O(1), different nondimensionalization schemes have to be adopted for low and high crank speeds. The slenderness ratio of the connecting rod arises naturally as a small parameter with which the order of magnitude of each term in the equations of motion, and the implication of these simplified formulations can be examined. It is found that the formulations in previous researches give satisfactory results only when the crank speed is low. On the other hand when the crank speed is comparable to the first bending natural frequency of the connecting rod, these simplified formulations overestimate considerably the dynamic response because terms of significant order of magnitude are removed inadequately.

Abstract During the manufacture and transport of textile products, yarns are rotated at high speed and form balloons. The dynamic response of the balloon to varying rotation speed, boundary excitation, and disturbance forces governs the quality of the associated process. Resonance, in particular, can cause large tension variations that reduce product quality and may cause yarn breakage. In this paper, the natural frequencies and mode shapes of a single loop balloon are calculated to predict resonance. The three dimensional nonlinear equations of motion are simplified via small steady state displacement (sag) and vibration assumptions. Axial vibration is assumed to propagate instantaneously or in a quasistatic manner. Galerkin’s method is used to calculate the mode shapes and natural frequencies of the linearized equations. Experimental measurements of the steady state balloon shape and the first two natural frequencies and mode shapes are compared with theoretical predictions.

In this paper, the dynamic performance of the Ruston and Hornsby VEB diesel engine connecting-rod bearing with circular and out-of-round profiles is analyzed. The effect of cavitation is considered by using a cavitation algorithm, which mimics JFO boundary conditions. The effect of mass inertia is accounted for by solving coupled nonlinear equations of motion. The journal profiles considered are circular, elliptical, semi elliptical and three lobe epicycloid. The predicted journal trajectory and other performance parameters for one complete load cycle are presented for all of the out-of-round profiles and are also compared with the predictions for the circular bearing.

The free motion of an undamped pendulum-type vibration absorber is studied on the basis of approximate nonlinear equations of motion. It is shown that this type of mechanical system exhibits the phenomenon of auto parametric excitation; a type of “instability” which cannot be accounted for on the basis of the linearized system. Complete energy transfer between modes is shown to occur when the beam frequency is twice the simple pendulum frequency. On the basis of a numerical solution, approximately 150 cycles of the beam oscillation take place during a single cycle of energy interchange.

In the field of port design there is a need for a reliable but time-efficient method to assess the behavior of moored ships in order to determine if further detailed analysis of the behavior is required. The response of moored ships induced by gusting wind and/or waves is dynamic. Excessive motion response may cause interruption of the (un)loading operation. High line tension may cause lines to snap, introducing dangerous situations. A (detailed) Dynamic Mooring Analysis (DMA), however, is often a time-consuming and expensive exercise, especially when responses in many different environmental conditions need to be assessed. Royal HaskoningDHV has developed a time-efficient computational tool in-house to assess the wave (sea or swell) induced dynamic response of ships moored to exposed berths. The mooring line characteristics are linearized and the equations of motion are solved in the frequency domain with both the 1st and 2nd wave forces taken into account. This tool has been termed Less=Moor. The accuracy and reliability of the computational tool has been illustrated by comparing motions and mooring line forces to results obtained with software that solves the nonlinear equations of motion in the time domain (aNySIM). The calculated response of a Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) moored to dolphins located offshore has been presented. The results show a good comparison. The computational tool can therefore be used to indicate whether the wave induced response of ships moored at exposed berths proves to be critical. The next step is to make this tool suitable to assess the dynamic response of moored ships with large wind areas, e.g. container ships, cruise vessels, RoRo or car carriers, to gusting wind. In addition, assessment of ship responses in a complicated wave field (e.g. with reflected infra-gravity waves) also requires more research effort.

In this paper, vibration behavior of engine on nonlinear hydraulic engine mount including inertia track and decoupler is studied. In this regard, after introducing the nonlinear factors of this mount (i.e. inertia and decoupler resistances in turbulent region), the vibration governing equations of engine on one hydraulic engine mount are solved and the effect of nonlinearity is investigated. In order to have a comparison between rubber and hydraulic engine mounts, a 6 degree of freedom four cylinders V-shaped engine under inertia and balancing masses forces and torques is considered. By solving the time domain nonlinear equations of motion of engine on three inclined mounts, translational and rotational motions of engines body are obtained for different engine speeds. Transmitted base forces are also determined for both types of engine mount. Comparison of rubber and hydraulic mounts indicates the efficiency of hydraulic one in low frequency region.

Many finite element programs including standard commercial software such as ABAQUS use an incremental finite strain formulation that is not fully work-conjugate, i.e., the work of stress increments on the strain increments does not give a second-order accurate expression for work. In particular, the stress increments based on the Jaumann rate of Kirchhoff stress are work-conjugate with the increments of the Hencky (logarithmic) strain tensor but are paired in many finite element programs with the increments of Green’s Lagrangian strain tensor. Although this problem was pointed out as early 1971, a demonstration of its significance in realistic situations has been lacking. Here it is shown that, in buckling of compressed highly orthotropic columns or sandwich columns that are very “soft” in shear, the use of such nonconjugate stress and strain increments can cause large errors, as high as 100% of the critical load, even if the strains are small. A similar situation may arise when severe damage such as distributed cracking leads to a highly anisotropic tangential stiffness matrix, or when axial cracks between fibers severely weaken a uniaxial fiber composite or wood. A revision of these finite element programs is advisable, and will in fact be easy—it will suffice to replace the Jaumann rate with the Truesdell rate. Alternatively, the Green’s Lagrangian strain could be replaced with the Hencky strain.

Consistent tangent stiffness plays a crucial role in delivering a quadratic rate of convergence when using Newton’s method in solving nonlinear equations of motion. In this paper, consistent tangent stiffness is derived for a three-dimensional (3D) wheel–rail interaction element (WRI element for short) originally developed by the authors and co-workers. The algorithm has been implemented in finite element (FE) software framework (OpenSees in this paper) and proven to be effective. Application examples of wheelset and light rail vehicle are provided to validate the consistent tangent stiffness. The quadratic convergence rate is verified. The speeds of calculation are compared between the use of consistent tangent stiffness and the tangent by perturbation method. The results demonstrate the improved computational efficiency of WRI element when consistent tangent stiffness is used.

A simple model of a rigid rotor supported on magnetic bearings is considered. A proportional control architecture is assumed, the nonlinear equations of motion are derived and some essential nondimensional parameters are identified. The free and forced response of the system is analyzed using techniques of nonlinear analysis. Both qualitative and quantitative results are obtained and stability criteria are derived for safe operation of the system.
