MECHANICAL PERFORMANCE OF ROLLER COMPACTED RUBBERCRETE WITH DIFFERENT MINERAL FILLER

The rate of waste tire generation globally continues to escalate due to increase in vehicle usage. Scrap tires continue to pose serious environmental, health and aesthetic problems. Due limitation in the recycling of scrap tires, one of the most viable solution is to used crumb rubber from scrap tire as partial replacement to fine aggregate in concrete industry. This is rationalized as the production of concrete hit more than 3.8 billion cubic meters annually, therefore, it could provide a solution on conservation of natural aggregate and as well as improve properties of concrete. However, the major setback in the use of crumb rubber in concrete is loss in strength.  In this paper, crumb rubber was used to partially replaced fine aggregate at 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% by volume in roller compacted concrete for pavement applications to produce roller compacted rubbercrete (RCR) to improve its flexural strength and ductility. Several trials were done to achieve the combined grading as recommended by ACI 211.3R, and finally a combination of 55% fine aggregate, 40% coarse aggregate and 5% fine sand as mineral filler was used. In order to mitigate the effect of strength loss, silica fume and fly ash were used to replace natural fine sand as mineral fillers. The Results showed that fresh density, compressive, splitting and flexural strengths decreases with increase in partial replacement of fine aggregate with crumb rubber. However using silica fume as a mineral filler was successful in mitigating loss in compressive, tensile and flexural strengths for up to 20% crumb rubber replacement level, while fly ash as a mineral filler mitigated loss in strength for up to 10% crumb rubber compared natural fine sand mineral filler. The flexural strength was found to increase with 10% crumb rubber for all type of mineral filler

Introduction. This study focuses on the use of silica fume partially replacing cement with 0, 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5 and 30 % constant replacement of fly ash by weight of cement in concrete. Concrete is probably the most extensively used construction material in the world. But the conventional concrete is losing its uses with time and high-performance concrete (HPC) is taking that place. HPC has superior mechanical properties and durability to normal strength concrete. Because of, the microstructure of HPC is more homogeneous than that of normal concrete (NC) due to the physical and chemical contribution of the mineral admixtures as well as it is less porous due to reduced w/c ratio with the addition of a superplasticizer. The inclusion of additives helped in improving the properties of concrete mixes due to the additional reduction in porosity of cement paste and improving the particle packing in the interfacial transition zone (between cement paste and the aggregates).In this experimental investigation the behavior of HPC with silica fume and fly ash with and without quartz powder were studied. The water-binder ratio was kept 0.3 and 20 % quartz flour as partial replacement of fine aggregate for all cases. Materials and methods. Used materials in Vietnam, as follow, Sulfate-resisting Portland cement - PCSR40 (type V) of company Luks Cement (Vietnam) Limited was used in the work. Crushed granite of fraction 9.5…20 mm - as coarse aggregate, Natural sand from Huong river of 0.15…2.5 mm fraction with the fineness modulus of about 3.0 and quartz powder with an average particle size of 5…10 μm were used as fillers; Sika® Viscocrete®-151 is a superplasticizer based on a blend of 3rd generation PCE polymers was used as a plasticizing admixture. The flg ash from Pha Lai thermal power plant and Sika silica Sikacrete® PP1 (particle size < 0.1 μm) was used as a mineral active admixture. The study of strength and technological properties of high-performance concrete was performed by using standard methods. Results. Established by icate that, the workability and strength increase at a certain level and after that, they decline with further increase in the replacement level of silica fume is 12.5 %, on the basis of 30 % FA replacement, the incorporation of 10 % SF showed equivalent or higher mechanical properties and durability compared to the reference samples. Conclusions. HPC consists of mineral admixtures such as silica fume and fly ash use combine quartz powder and superplasticizer helped in improving the strength and durability of concrete mixes due to the additional reduction in porosity of cement paste and an improved interface between it and the aggregate. With 30 % fly ash is optimum dosage used to replacement of cement, incorporation 10 % SF (by weight) and combine of partial replacement of fine aggregate by 20 % quartz powder. On the other hand, a few mathematical equations can be used to derive the durability properties of concrete based on its compressive strength.

Pervious concrete primarily is used as a means of storm water management. Taking into consideration the environment issues, the binder can also be formed by partially replaced Portland cement by cementitious materials, such as blast furnace slag fine powder, fly ash and silica fume. The combination of the binder materials was determined based on previous work, which composed of 56% Portland Composite Cement, 15% fly ash Type F, 26% air-cooled blast furnace slag from a local steel Industry and 3% condensed silica fume. The compressive strength of specimens with coarser aggregate was lower compared with the control pervious concrete, but still within the range of the requirement compressive strength according to ACI 522R-2010. The difference of the aggregate size affected the enhancement of the compressive strength. The flexural strength of pervious concrete with aggregate size of 9.5mm-12.5mm tend to be higher compared with that of pervious concrete with smaller aggregate size. Furthermore, the addition of 6% natural fine aggregate while applying higher water/cement ratio could be a contribution to the enhancement of the compressive and the flexural strength.

Waste tire and fly ash (FA) are two waste materials whose disposal and rapid rate of accumulation are among the pressing sources of concern and threat to the environment. Although much research exists on the use of these materials in cementitious composites, very little literature is available on the effectiveness of combining them in high volumes for concrete production. This work aimed to utilize crumb rubber (CR) from waste tires as a partial replacement of fine aggregate at 15%, 22.25%, and 30% by volume, and high-volume fly ash (HVFA) replacement of cement at 50%, 60%, and 70% (by weight of cementitious materials) to produce high-volume fly ash–crumb rubber concrete (HVFA–CRC). Using the central composite design (CCD) option of the response surface methodology (RSM), 13 mixes were produced with different combinations and levels of the CR and FA (the input factors) on which the responses of interest (compressive, flexural, and tensile strengths) were experimentally investigated. Furthermore, the composite influence of CR and HVFA on the workability of the concrete was assessed using the slump test. The results showed a decline in the mechanical properties with increasing replacement levels of the CR and HVFA. However, up to 22.25% and 60% of CR and HVFA replacements, respectively, produced a structural HVFA–CRC with a compressive strength of more than 20 MPa at 28 days. Response predictive models were developed and validated using ANOVA at a 95% confidence level. The models had high R2 values ranging from 95.26 to 97.74%. Multi-objective optimization was performed and validated with less than 5% error between the predicted and experimental responses.

Waste tire disposal continues to pose a threat to the environment due to its non-biodegradable nature. Therefore, some means of managing waste tires include grinding them to crumb rubber (CR) sizes and using them as a partial replacement to fine aggregate in concrete. However, the use of CR has a series of advantages, but its major disadvantage is strength reduction. This leads to the utilization of calcium carbide waste (CCW) to mitigate the negative effect of CR in self-compacting concrete (SCC). This study investigates the durability properties of SCC containing CR modified using fly ash and CCW. The durability properties considered are water absorption, acid attack, salt resistance, and elevated temperature of the mixes. The experiment was conducted for mixes with no-fly ash content and their replica mixes containing fly ash to replace 40% of the cement. In the mixes, CR was used to partially replace fine aggregate in proportions of 0%, 10%, and 20% by volume, and CCW was used as a partial replacement to cement at 0%, 5%, and 10% by volume. The results indicate that the mixes containing fly ash had higher resistance to acid (H2SO4) and salt (MgSO4), with up to 23% resistance observed when compared to the mix containing no fly ash. In addition, resistance to acid attack decreased with the increase in the replacement of fine aggregate with CR. The same principle applied to the salt attack scenario, although the rate was more rapid with the acid than the salt. The results obtained from heating indicate that the weight loss was reduced slightly with the increase in CCW, and was increased with the increase in CR and temperature. Similarly, the compressive strength was observed to slightly increase at room temperature (27 °C) and the greatest loss in compressive strength was observed between the temperature of 300 and 400 °C. However, highest water absorption, of 2.83%, was observed in the mix containing 20% CR, and 0% CCW, while the lowest water absorption, of 1.68%, was found in the mix with 0% CR, 40% fly ash, and 10% CCW. In conclusion, fly ash is recommended for concrete structures immersed in water, acid, or salt in sulphate- and magnesium-prone areas; conversely, fly ash and CR reduce the resistance of SCC to heat beyond 200 °C.

Sustainability and scarcity in resources are the two major issues to be dealt within the present scenario by effective utilization of alternative materials. In this present study, an attempt has been taken to study the effect of supplementary materials such as fly ash and silica fume as a partial replacement to cement and steel slag and M-sand as a replacement to river sand on strength and durability of concrete. In this study, concrete specimens were prepared based on five different mixes by varying the percentages of these supplementary materials. Various mechanical properties like compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength were performed to ascertain the mix with optimum levels of replacement of supplementary materials for cement and fine aggregate. Durability property like water absorption test was performed on the mix with optimum values of strength. Results revealed that mix with higher percentages of steel slag, optimum level of silica fume and fly ash have shown higher strength and lesser permeability in concrete.

Self-compacting concrete has high workability and flow ability than normal compacted concrete. With its segregation resistance and fluidity, it offers a solution to problems in construction field like lack of skilled labour, inadequate compaction, over compaction, segregation etc. This study includes designing a self-compacting concrete mix which is standardized using its fresh properties with respect to EFNARC (European Federation of National Associations Representing for Concrete)standards. In this study, fly ash is used as partial replacement for cement in concrete. The mix design for M30 grade self-compacting concrete is done as per EFNARC standards. Then various properties of different mixes of M30 grade with 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% & 50%and 5% of silica fume as partial replacements of cement were compared, and the optimum percentage replacement is obtained at 30% replacement (SCC 30). On determining the optimum percentage replacement of fly ash in cement for M30 grade SCC as SCC 30, various properties such as weight loss and compressive strength and flexural strength of SCC 30 with normal SCC 30 are compared and then finally basalt fibres were added to cement content to asses the performance of concrete with fly ash and fibres as partial replacements of cement. It is found that the there is loss in weight as well as compressive strength and flexural strength of specimen due to adding fly ash and basalt fibres

Concrete has a key role in construction. Study focus on workability of the concrete, Fine Aggregate is partially filled with crumb rubber and M sand, a part of cement is replaced with fly ash. In this investigation the crumb rubber is utilised in place of fine aggregate. The scrap tyre treatment is currently a serious issue against environmental pollution. India stud in forth position in the entire world for rubber tyre market world after china, Europe and the US. Fly ash and M sand is an industrial waste which is included in the concrete. In this investigation workability of concrete is conducted on M20 grade concrete by replacing river side sand with the M sand and crumb rubber at percentage of replacements 0 to 20% at an regular interval of 5%and Compare the results obtained by the modified concrete with the normal concrete.

Abstract Engineered cementitious composites (ECC) mixtures demand a large cement content, which is detrimental to their sustainable development because mass cement production is hazardous to the environment and human health. Thus, this paper investigates the mechanical performance of eco engineered cementitious composites (ECC) under axial compressive loading and direct tensile strength tests. The eco ECC used in this investigation was comprised of cement, superplasticizer, fly ash (FA) or ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), polypropylene (PP) fibre, water and recycled concrete fines (RCF). Two (2) eco ECC mixture series were designed and prepared. GGBS70 (70 percent GGBS + 30 percent cement), FA70 (70 percent Fly Ash + 30 percent cement), GGBS80 (80 percent GGBS + 20 percent cement), and FA80 (80 percent Fly Ash + 20 percent cement) are the four Cement-GGBS and Cement-Fly Ash combinations examined in this study. Also every combination had two different RCF percentages, R0.2 (0.2 percent RCF) and R0.4 (0.4 percent RCF). The main objective of this research is to determine the optimum mix design for eco ECC that contains supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) such as GGBS or FA. Additionally, recycled concrete fines (RCF) were used as a substitute for sand. The influence of different cement replacement materials and RCF content on compressive and tensile strength was experimentally investigated. The inclusion of GGBS as a partial replacement of cement in the eco concrete mixture results in greater compressive strength than Fly Ash (FA). The test results revealed that increasing the RCF content in the ECC mixture resulted in higher compressive and tensile strength. When the sand to binder ratio was adjusted between 0.2 and 0.4, the compressive and tensile strength of the ECC mixture increased.
