The high demand of seaweed for their polysaccharide namely carrageenan leads to the commercial production of carrageenophytes through mariculture. Based on literatures it is well documented that growth rate and carrageenan yield depend on environmental factors such as salinity, pH, temperatures, light intensity and water movement. In this study, growth rate and carrageenan yield of Gracilaria manilaensis, a red seaweed, was determined at different pH and salinities. G. manilaensis was cultured under laboratory conditions in a 500 mL flask at different salinities (15 psu, 20 psu and 25 psu ) and pH (7.6, 7.8, and 8.0) for 21 days. At the end of experiment, the growth rate was determined followed by carrageenan analysis. From the analysis, growth rate was highest at salinity of 15 psu and pH 7.6 with 1.3 ± 0.2 % day-1.For carrageenan analysis, the seaweed was air dried for about a week until it reached a constant weight. Farmed G. manilaensis was used as control and carrageenan yield was determined from farmed G. manilaensis. It gives yield of 50.2 ± 10.9 %. For carrageenan yield analysis, the highest value was demonstrated at salinity of 25 psu and pH 8.0 with 91.7± 14.4 %. Result shows that carrageenan yields from G. manilaensis under laboratory conditions are higher compared to farmed Gracillaria.  This indicates that the quality of G. manilaensis in term of carrageenan content can be optimized under certain growth conditions. This is important as this species has the potential to be commercialized for pharmaceutical and food industries.

Electro Dynamic Gradient (EDG) method was utilized for TlBr crystal growth in this paper. The influence of crystal growth conditions such as temperature gradient and growth rate on optical and electrical properties of grown TlBr crystals was investigated. The quality of TlBr crystals was characterized by infrared (IR) transmittance spectrum, X-ray diffraction, and I-V measurements.

ABSTRACTEffects of the growth conditions on the growth and the quality of thin films of Al2O3 were investigated in the ALE-like process. It has been found that the growth rate remains nearly independent of the growth conditions when the pulse heights are 80–120 mTorr and 20–160 mTorr for H2O2 and TMA respectively, the pulse duration longer than 0.3 s, the base pressure below 1 mTorr, and the growth temperature higher than 150°C. Also, we found that the density, the chemical bonding strength, and the electrical properties improved markedly with raising the growth temperature although the growth rate remained nearly constant. In addition, area-selective growth and partly polycrystalline films were favorably obtained by using pulsed molecular beams of TMA and H2O2 in the growth.

The aim of this study was to estimate the effect of feeding system on the growth rate and carcass quality of crossbred Improved Jezersko-Solčava x Texel (JSRT) lambs and to evaluate the effect of sex on these traits. The trial was conducted in nature according to the traditional rearing systems. The trial included 44 crossbred lambs, which were born and reared until the slaughter in three different flocks. In the age of 10 days suckled lambs were offered with ad libitum corresponding diets according to the feeding system. All lambs were slaughtered in seven consecutive days by the same procedure. The effect of feeding system significantly affected daily gain from birth to slaughter, EUROP carcass conformation and shoulder width. Likewise, the effect of sex significantly affected daily gain from birth to slaughter and internal fatness of carcasses. According to carcass cuts the feeding system significantly affected only the proportion of neck and leg. Considering meat quality traits, feeding system had a significant effect on the pH 45 and CIE a* values. In this study, we could speculate that more than the feeding system the growth and the carcass traits as well as meat traits were affected by the amount of the supplement.

Gluten-free (GF) products, including pasta, are often characterised by nutritional deficiencies, such as scarce dietary fibre and excess of calories. Chickpea flour is increasingly being used by the food industries. Hulls, rich in dietary fibre and bioactive compounds, are discarded after milling. The aim of this work was to evaluate the quality features of short-cut GF fresh pasta added of hull (8% w/w) derived from kabuli (KH) or Apulian black (ABH) chickpeas, in comparison with control GF pasta prepared without hull. The enriched pasta, which could be labelled as “high fibre”, was characterised by a higher level of bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity than the control. ABH-enriched pasta showed the highest anthocyanins (33.37 ± 1.20 and 20.59 ± 0.11 mg/kg of cyanidin-3-O-glucoside on dry matter in raw and cooked pasta, respectively). Hull addition increased colour intensity and structural quality of GF pasta: ABH-enriched pasta had the lowest cooking loss and the highest water absorption capacity; KH-enriched pasta showed the highest firmness. No significant differences in sensory liking were found among the samples, except for “aftertaste”. Chickpea hull can be used as an innovative ingredient to produce potentially functional GF pasta, meeting the dietary needs of consumers without affecting quality.

Well-ordered, pure-phase epitaxial films of FeO, Fe3O4, and γ–Fe2O3 were prepared on MgO(001) by oxygen-plasma-assisted MBE. The stoichiometries of these thin films were controlled by varying the growth rate and oxygen partial pressure. Selective growth of γ–Fe2O3 and α–Fe2O3 was achieved by controlling the growth conditions in conjunction with the choice of appropriate substrates. Growth of the iron oxide epitaxial films on MgO at ≥350 °C is accompanied by significant Mg outdiffusion. The FeO(001) film surface exhibits a (2 × 2) reconstruction, which is accompanied by a significant amount of Fe3+ in the surface region. Fe3O4 (001) has been found to reconstruct to a structure. γ–Fe23 (001) film surface is unreconstructed.

The aim of the study was to review the results of scientific research on the effect of herbs and phytogenic feed additives used in poultry nutrition on animal welfare, breeding conditions, and the quality of meat. The article explains the importance of feed additives used in poultry nutrition. It discusses the role of herbs and phytogenic feed additives in nutrition in the context of the increasing demand for and consumption of poultry meat. The article also analyzes the influence of herbs and phytogenic feed additives on animal welfare, rearing conditions, and meat quality. The results of research on the effect of herbs and phytogenic feed additives used in poultry nutrition are not unequivocal. In view of the high demand for poultry meat, there is need for continued research on the optimal composition of herbal mixtures in nutrition to obtain good breeding conditions and high quality meat.

Abstract Improving current injection into r- and m-planes of nanowires (NWs) is essential to realizing efficient GaInN/GaN multiple quantum shell (MQS) NW-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Here, we present the effects of different p-GaN shell growth conditions on the emission characteristics of MQS NW-LEDs. Firstly, a comparison between cathodoluminescence (CL) and electroluminescence (EL) spectra indicates that the emission in NW-LEDs originates from the top region of the NWs. By growing thick p-GaN shells, the variable emission peak at around 600 nm and degradation of the light output of the NW-LEDs are elaborated, which is attributable to the localization of current in the c-plane region with various In-rich clusters and deep-level defects. Utilizing a high growth rate of p-GaN shell, an increased r-plane and a reduced c-plane region promote the deposition of indium tin oxide layer over the entire NW. Therefore, the current is effectively injected into both the r- and m-planes of the NW structures. Consequently, the light output and EL peak intensity of the NW-LEDs are enhanced by factors of 4.3 and 13.8, respectively, under an injection current of 100 mA. Furthermore, scanning transmission electron microscope images demonstrate the suppression of dislocations, triangular defects, and stacking faults at the apex of the p-GaN shell with a high growth rate. Therefore, localization of current injection in nonradiative recombination centers near the c-plane was also inhibited. Our results emphasize the possibility of realizing high efficacy in NW-LEDs via optimal p-GaN shell growth conditions, which is quite promising for application in the long-wavelength region.

The effects of sex and age of castration of males on growth rate, feed efficiency and carcass characteristics in bacon type swine were measured using 16 pigs each as gilts, entire boars, and boars castrated at birth, 6, 12, 16, and 20 weeks of age. Castration at 20 weeks was too late since some pigs reached 200 pounds live weight before that age. Boars consumed less feed daily than barrows and gilts, were thinner in loin fat, and yielded a higher percentage of shoulder than gilts. The carcasses of boars and gilts were longer, had less fat covering over the shoulder and back, a larger area of loin, and a higher iodine number than those castrated late. Acceptability tests showed that sex or age of castration did not affect the flavour, odour, or tenderness of the meat.Purebred breeders can delay castration for better selection of boars without any serious effect on growth, physical carcass characteristics, and feed requirements. Although the market discriminates against boars, it appears questionable whether castration is necessary when boars are slaughtered at 200 pounds before they reach the age of 150 days.
