The monitoring of human affective state is a key part of developing responsive and naturally behaving human-robot interaction systems. However, evaluation and calibration of physiologically monitored affective state data is typically done using offline questionnaires and user reports. This paper investigates the potential to use an on-line device to collect user self reports that can be then used to calibrate physiologically generated affective state data. The collection of on-line calibration data is particularly germane to human-robot interaction where the physiological responses of interest include those related to more high frequency affective state events related to arousal (surprise, fear, alarm) as well as the more low frequency events (contentment, boredom, pleasure). In this context, this paper describes the development of an experimental device, and a preliminary study, to answer the question: Can people report, on-line, two degree of freedom continuous affective states using a hand held device suitable for calibration of physiologically obtained signals? In the following paper, we report on both the device design and user trials. Further work, using the device to calibrate existing models of the user’s affective state during human-robot interaction, is ongoing and will be reported at the time of the conference.

The following paper deals with the problem of military personnel training for guard duty and their moral and psychological maintenance during their duty. The division commander, being responsible for the guard personnel training should have a set of techniques, ways and methods of military personnel training for duty, while the guard chief, in addition, must be able to timely detect, identify and neutralize negative effects of stress on the personality of military personnel members of the guard. Surveys with the guard personnel revealed the contradiction between the requirements to military personnel and the actual state of psychological microclimate in the guard. It is obvious that the leveling of the stress influence on the soldiers personality will have a positive impact on the psychological microclimate of the guard personnel, but it should be done without any damage to the combat mission quality. The author has found a solution and created a method of the soldier state monitoring in the organization and guard duty. The application of this method has improved the quality of combat mission execution by guard personnel.

Analysis of the breakdown-statistics of the Hungarian crude and gas pipeline system dating back more than 20 years shows the main sources of the errors. In order to prevent these, we have started a vast program regarding state monitoring of pipelines by means of the common use of on-line and above-ground methodes. Related expenses are as high as 8% of maintenance costs. Manual handling and analysing of the available and continually increasing data nowadays is already insoluble. To solve the problem, we have decided to develop an integrated information system that integrates the technical data with the up-to-date GIS applications, thus providing a wide-range application possibility for the operating staff. Integrity analysis is supported by the system, which shows the various examination results in a comparable way, their change in time can be followed, and there is a possibility to automatically compare them sinchronously with map displaying. The system is able to receive and process the results of outer examination (for example such as of an intelligent pipe scraper), but the sinchronous transmission into outer systems is also possible. The development of the information system and especially the input of the data into the system is possible only at great costs but the usefulness of the application and the turnover of the investment can be, even if only undirectly, proved.
