The following paper deals with the problem of military personnel training for guard duty and their moral and psychological maintenance during their duty. The division commander, being responsible for the guard personnel training should have a set of techniques, ways and methods of military personnel training for duty, while the guard chief, in addition, must be able to timely detect, identify and neutralize negative effects of stress on the personality of military personnel members of the guard. Surveys with the guard personnel revealed the contradiction between the requirements to military personnel and the actual state of psychological microclimate in the guard. It is obvious that the leveling of the stress influence on the soldiers personality will have a positive impact on the psychological microclimate of the guard personnel, but it should be done without any damage to the combat mission quality. The author has found a solution and created a method of the soldier state monitoring in the organization and guard duty. The application of this method has improved the quality of combat mission execution by guard personnel.

Abstract The quality of life and economic development of economies and their regions is influenced by socio-economic indicators such as unemployment, healthcare and education, environmental issues or household equipment. The question remains whether these indicators within regions can also influence each other and whether they have positive or negative effects. The paper aims to describe the impact of the selected socioeconomic indicators on health personnel, which was also divided from the gender perspective. For this purpose, the regions of the Visegrad Group Plus countries at NUTS II level were selected. The research was performed in the period from 2004 to 2013. According to our results based on the Generalized Method of Moments with panel data, we found out that a change in household income and a change in the number of vehicles in the monitored regions have the greatest (positive) impact on staff in hospitals. The research may contribute to the discussion about levels of regional economic development and the related competitiveness in terms of the socio-economic approach, and it may also provide a basis for further discussion on its measurement and use of appropriate indicators.

Tax revenue is influenced by many factors. Existing studies reveal that political stability, level of corruption, quality of the policy, income per capita, share of agriculture to the GDP, and market openness are some of the factors influencing tax revenue. This study aims to analyze the influence of governance by using some indicators, such as political stability, government effectiveness, quality of regulation, law enforcement accountability and control on corruption in tax area through empirical analysis of ASEAN countries. Descriptive analysis and causality methods are employed in this study. causality method is used to determine the relationship between observed variables using panel regression. The results of the study indicate that the controlon corruption, voice and accountability and political stability variables have significant negative effects on the tax ratio, while rule of law and quality of regulatory variables have positive impact on the tax ratio.

Loop diuretics take the lead in the treatment of patients with symptomatic heart failure. Torasemide is the most effective and safe loop diuretic with the optimal pharmacokinetic profile, the additional properties associated with simultaneous blockade of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and with the antiadrenergic effects of the drug, its positive impact on myocardial fibrosis and minimal severe potential negative effects. Sustained-release torasemide provides a more comfortable removal of excess liquid and does not deteriorate quality of life.

Neuroticism has been linked to an increased likelihood of cognitive failures, including episodes of inattentiveness, forgetfulness, or accidents causing difficulties in successfully executing everyday tasks and impacting health and quality of life. Cognitive failures associated with trait neuroticism can prompt some negative psychological outcomes and risky behaviors. Accumulating evidence shows that augmenting mindfulness can benefit cognitive health and general well-being. However, little is known regarding potential cognitive-behavioral pathways through which individual differences in trait neuroticism could influence the propensity to cognitive failures. Using a sample of 1003 undergraduate college students (females: n = 779) consisting of self-reported questionnaire data, we conducted correlational and mediational analyses to investigate the interrelationship between neuroticism, mindfulness, and cognitive failures. Higher neuroticism scores (females: r = −0.388, males: r = −0.390) and higher cognitive failures scores (females: r = −0.339, males: r = −0.407, p < .001) were significantly correlated with lower self-reported mindfulness scores. Mindfulness significantly mediated the relationship between neuroticism and cognitive failures (β = 0.50, 95%, CI: 0.37, 0.65). These findings indicate that higher mindfulness may help ameliorate negative effects of neuroticism on everyday cognitive failures. Future research will determine how college students may benefit from positive impact of mindfulness to improve their psychological and physical health.

Summary Background: The ‘Confidence’ smartphone application aims to support elderly people’s independence as long as possible. Objective: This paper presents first findings on the impact of the system on elderlies’ lives. Methods: 41 end-users tested ‘Confidence’ for six weeks in their daily routine. Before and after the test period the participants assessed their quality of life (QoL). These assessments were analyzed together with additional QoL statements and the usage of ‘Confidence’ which were collected with questionnaires. Results: Six participants assessed their QoL after the trial better than before and six participants assessed it as worse. Five individuals felt that ‘Confidence’ positively influenced their life and these five testers had a positive attitude towards ‘Confidence’ from the start of the trial. After the trial 38 % of the participants said that they felt safer, 37 % communicated more with others, 27 % forgot less, 13 % felt better oriented outside, and 7 % were more on the move due to ‘Confidence’. Three percent said that they were less on the move, two percent felt more unsafe and two percent were less outside. Conclusion: ‘Confidence’ has the potential to affect elderly users’ lives. However, within this analysis positive or negative effects of its usage were not correlated with the QoL assessment. A connection between positive attitude towards technology prior use and a positive impact afterwards was found. Citation: Willner V, Schneider C, Feichtenschlager M. Abstract Erythropoietin (Epo) and G-CSF alleviates anemia and increases quality of life in myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). In patients with low transfusion need and low S-Epo level the erythroid response rate reaches 70% with a median response duration of two years, while patients with high transfusion need and high S-Epo level respond poorly and do not benefit from treatment. A recent study comparing Epo and G-CSF treated MDS patients with untreated historical controls indicates that the treatment can be given safely as chronic administration. To investigate the affects of growth factor treatment on outcome in patients with different probability of response, we compared treated patients included in three Nordic MDS Group studies (n=123) with untreated patients from Pavia, Italy (n=240). In both cohorts data on level of transfusion need and S-Epo level was recorded at baseline. All patients were transfusion dependent (n=176) or anemic with a hemoglobin level below 10 g/dl (n=187). An erythroid response, defined as at least abolition of transfusion need, was observed in 41% of treated patients, with a median response duration of 23 months (range 3–116+). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that treated patients with transfusion need of less than 2 units of RBC per month had a survival benefit, with HR 0.57 (P=0.015), while no difference in survival was observed in patients with higher transfusion need (P=0.36). There was no significant impact on risk of leukemic transformation in patients with the low (P=0.75) or high (P=0.21) transfusion need. This is the first study implicating that treatment of anemia in MDS with Epo and G-CSF in selected patients has a positive impact on outcome. Whether this effect is mediated by limiting the iron overload or counteracting other negative effects chronic anemia remains to be investigated.

AbstractMany studies show that keeping cats and dogs has a positive impact on humans’ physical and mental health and quality of life. The existence of this “pet phenomenon” is now widely discussed because other studies performed recently have demonstrated a negative impact of owning pets or no impact at all. The main problem of many studies was the autoselection – participants were informed about the aims of the study during recruitment and later likely described their health and wellbeing according to their personal beliefs and wishes, not according to their real status. To avoid this source of bias, we did not mention pets during participant recruitment and hid the pet-related questions among many hundreds of questions in an 80-minute Internet questionnaire. Results of our study performed on a sample of on 10,858 subjects showed that liking cats and dogs has a weak positive association with quality of life. However, keeping pets, especially cats, and even more being injured by pets, were strongly negatively associated with many facets of quality of life. Our data also confirmed that infection by the cat parasiteToxoplasmahad a very strong negative effect on quality of life, especially on mental health. However, the infection was not responsible for the observed negative effects of keeping pets, as these effects were much stronger in 1,527Toxoplasma-free subjects than in the whole population. Any cross-sectional study cannot discriminate between a cause and an effect. However, because of the large and still growing popularity of keeping pets, the existence and nature of the reverse pet phenomenon deserve the outmost attention.
