Abstract In this paper we present an experimental investigation of active vibration control of a scaled bridge tower model under artificial wind excitation. The control scheme is designed on the basis of a reduced order model of the flexible structures using the LQ control theory, with a collocation of four laser displacement sensors and two hybrid electro-magnetic actuators. The experimental results in the wind tunnel show that both the bending and the twisting vibrations covering the first five modes of the structure are controlled well.

Satellite state control has always been an important topic in aerospace technology. Because it is required that when the satellite is stationary in orbit, it would be directed to a special object and this task should be performed in a situation where there isn’t access to the satellite. This task is performed using various technologies and one of these is the use of magnetic actuators. Magnetic actuators use mechanical torque that is resulted by interaction of electrical current of coils in the satellite and the earth’s magnetic field. The satellite is subjected to such disturbance torques, thus corrupting the direction of the satellite. This method has its advantages and disadvantages. Its drawback is that the magnetic torque is produced only perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic field and the axis of the coil. This paper models a satellite having magnetic actuators using bond graph, and finds out its state equations, and then constructs the control logic that is needed for its control. A model of three dimensional attitude maneuvers and magnetic systems using bond graph is described. The actuators are tuned using the method of particle swarm optimization (PSO). It is observed that using this method a small satellite reaches to the desired angle in a short time and becomes stationary.

Six Sigma Methodology

Electromagnetic actuators are used in a variety of technical applications especially in the automotive industry. In-line process control methods are an essential component of the Lean and Six Sigma methodology to ensure process quality. However, the current state of the art in process and quality control is largely limited to end-of-line measurements of the force output. Analysing the magnetic stray field is a promising method that can be used to draw conclusions on the properties and defects of the flux-conducting magnetic materials. This phenomenon can potentially be used to identify defects in magnetic actuators thus allowing inline quality-monitoring. In order to realize this feature, patterns in the magnetic stray field of an actuator have to be identified and linked to a specific defect. The resulting challenge is the analysis of large datasets in order to characterize the stray field anomalies. This paper summarizes the results of a study on linear magnetic actuators trying to prove a relationship between parasitic magnetic stray field and the overall force output of an actuator by analysing the data with statistical methods. The findings of this study suggest that certain statistical methods, like regression, are not well suited to build a prediction model for defects in actuators using a similar approach of measuring stray field outside the actuator. This is mainly due to the fact that prerequisites for model building are difficult to full fill within the context of stray field analysis. Nevertheless, the findings also suggest that methods of exploratory data analysis can be used to derive quality relevant information from data of stray field measurements. The paper elaborates on the problem of defining a population, choosing variables for model building, as well as model error.

In this systematic survey, an overview of non-conventional actuators particularly used in soft-robotics is presented. The review is performed by using well-defined performance criteria with a direction to identify the exemplary and potential applications. In addition to this, initial guidelines to compare the performance and applicability of these novel actuators are provided. The meta-analysis is restricted to five main types of actuators: shape memory alloys (SMAs), fluidic elastomer actuators (FEAs), shape morphing polymers (SMPs), dielectric electro-activated polymers (DEAPs), and magnetic/electro-magnetic actuators (E/MAs). In exploring and comparing the capabilities of these actuators, the focus was on eight different aspects: compliance, topology-geometry, scalability-complexity, energy efficiency, operation range, modality, controllability, and technological readiness level (TRL). The overview presented here provides a state-of-the-art summary of the advancements and can help researchers to select the most convenient soft actuators using the comprehensive comparison of the suggested quantitative and qualitative criteria.

Abstract. The technical parameters of magnetic actuators, such as electromagnets, resonance actuators, reluctance actuators etc., are determined by the magnetic properties of the materials as well as the manufacturing and the design configuration. Some exemplary defects in electromagnetic actuators due to the manufacturing are heterogeneous magnetic properties of the materials, cracks, defects and parasitic air gaps in and directly around the magnetic circuit. To implement inline measurement systems to characterise defects within the manufacturing process a study has been carried out to display the influences of production impacts on magnetic stray fields outside the magnetic circuit.
