The excitation energy of the Jπ = 5+, fourth excited state in 18F has been determined to be Ex = 1119.0 ± 0.6 keV from a measurement of the energy of the γ-ray transition to the 937 keV, first excited state. This new excitation energy removes the discrepancies in the excitation energy of resonant states based on γ-ray decay schemes involving this state. The mean lifetime has been determined to be τ(1119) = 218 ± 8 ns by a delayed coincidence measurement between the γ rays populating and deexciting this state.

High-level ab-initio equation-of-motion coupled-cluster methods with singles, doubles, and noniterative triples are used, in conjunction with the combined quantum mechanical molecular mechanics approach, to investigate the structure of low-lying excited states of the guanine base in DNA and solvated environments. Our results indicate that while the excitation energy of the first excited state is barely changed compared to its gas-phase counterpart, the excitation energy of the second excited state is blue-shifted by 0.24 eV.

The α particle spectra from the 11B(d,α)9Be reaction were analyzed for the first excited state of 9Be using three particle (n+α+8Be) kinematics with two particle final state interaction of the n+8Be system. A good fit was obtained assuming Ex = 1.70 ± 0.01 MeV and Γ = 0.20 ± 0.01 MeV.
