The α particle spectra from the 11B(d,α)9Be reaction were analyzed for the first excited state of 9Be using three particle (n+α+8Be) kinematics with two particle final state interaction of the n+8Be system. A good fit was obtained assuming Ex = 1.70 ± 0.01 MeV and Γ = 0.20 ± 0.01 MeV.

The shape of a peak in the 9Be(p,p′)9Be* → 8Be + n reaction, as measured by Spencer et al., has been calculated according to final-state interaction theory using the effective-range approximation. The value of the neutron–8Be scattering length thus obtained is [Formula: see text] corresponding to a relative excitation energy of 14.5 ± 5 keV.
