Abstract In this article, we propose an integrated framework especially, but not exclusively, tailored to the analysis of multisemiotic transfers/transformations that involve both linguistic and non-linguistic elements. The framework is based on the Swedish communication scholar Per Linell’s notion of recontextualization. This concept, which denotes the process of inserting an element from one context into another, thereby effecting some kind of transformation, is theoretically prior to both of the concepts ‘adaptation’ and ‘translation’ as they are prototypically understood, and encompasses them. Thus, taking this concept as a point of departure allows us to avoid artificial boundaries between that which is commonly considered to be adaptation-studies concerns, and that which is considered to be translation-studies concerns, in analyses of multisemiotic transfers/transformations such as film adaptations. By introducing a flexible set of ‘levels’ of recontextualization (medial, generic, cultural, ideological, and linguistic) and deploying them in a sample analysis of the immediate critical reception of Tomas Alfredson’s international reworking of Jo Nesbø’s The Snowman, we show how these levels work together to create various interpretative possibilities and effects for viewers. Finally, we argue that an integrated framework based around the notion of recontextualization will also be applicable in analyses of non-translation/non-adaptation texts, allowing comparisons of recontextualization phenomena across communicative forms.

Contemporary theoretical trends in Adaptation Studies and Translation Studies (Aragay 2005; Catrysse 2014; Milton 2009; Venuti 2007) envisage synergies between the two areas that can contribute to the sociocultural and artistic value of adaptations. This suggests the application of theoretical insights derived from Translation Studies to the adaptation of novels for the screen (i.e., film adaptations). It is argued that the process of transposing a novel into a filmic product entails an act of bidirectional communication between the book, the novel and the involved contexts of production and reception. Particular emphasis is placed on the role that context plays in this communication. Context here is taken to include paratextual material pertinent to the adapted text and to the film. Such paratext may lead to fruitful analyses of adaptations and, thus, surpass the myopic criterion of fidelity which has traditionally dominated Adaptation Studies. The analysis uses examples of adaptation shifts (i.e., changes between the source novel and the film adaptation) from the filmP.S. I Love You(LaGravenese 2007), which are examined against interviews of the author, the director and the cast, the film trailer and one film review.

Chapter 6 demonstrates how and why adaptation resists theorization at its second stage: the development of taxonomies. While taxonomization has been challenged as a theoretical enterprise generally, adaptation offers more particular resistance to it. As a process that crosses taxonomical borders of all kinds, adaptation is itself anti-taxonomical. Even so, examining how some scholars have sought to taxonomize adaptation and others have resisted adaptation taxonomies informs adaptation’s relationship to theorization. As with definitions, taxonomies have subjected adaptation to other disciplines and their taxonomies. While discussions of adaptation taxonomies have been largely focused on taxonomies from translation studies and narratology, adaptation has been subjected to a host of others, studied and organized by adapters, genres, nations, historical periods, media forms and technologies, and by the taxonomies of identity politics, which are rarely addressed as taxonomical systems. Moreover, disciplines are themselves taxonomies: certain disciplines (most notably philosophy, history, linguistics/rhetoric) have been accorded theorizing power in the humanities, while others have not. By contrast, adaptation inhabits all disciplines and cannot be satisfactorily theorized without input from them all. Joining scholars who have for centuries questioned the ability of rational and empirical epistemologies to theorize the arts, Chapter 6 argues for creative-critical adaptation practice as a way to generate dialogues between the theorizing and “non-theorizing” disciplines. As with definition, retheorizing adaptation theorization at the level of taxonomization is not a matter of deciding which taxonomies developed to study other things we should apply to adaptation but of taxonomizing adaptation as adaptation and of setting these in dialogue with the taxonomies we already have in adaptation studies.

Translation studies researchers have for a long time critically engaged with the idea of translation being a mode of creative rewriting across media and cultural or temporal divides. Adaptation studies experts use a similar premise to study products, processes and reception of adaptations for specific locales. This article combines such perspectives in order to shed light on an under-researched area of comic adaptation: this is the metabase, or transfer, of Aristophanic comedies to the comic book format in Greek and their subsequent translation into English for an e-book edition (Metaichmio Publications 2012). The paper suggests a model for the close reading of creative transfer based on Lefèvre’s (2011; 2012) typology of formal properties of comics and Attardo’s (2002) General Theory of Verbal Humour. As is shown, visual rhythm and text-image relations create a rich environment for anachronism, parody, comic characterisation and ideological comments, all of which serve a condensed plot. The English translation rewrites cultural/ideological references, amplifies obscenity and emphasizes narrator visibility, always taking into consideration the mise en scène.

De todo lo expuesto, se extraen algunas recomendaciones prácticas. Using a text chosen as a point of departure, this comparative analysis of the Spanish and English versions addresses three main aspects: the contextualization of the document (function, target audience, genre of discourse, etc.); the scope of legal translation; and the analysis of ten cases of particular interest within the discipline of translation studies. With this basis, practical recommendations are given.

AbstractThe introduction offers insights into the praxeological approach of the SPP 2130 “Early Modern Translation Cultures”. Translation is considered a central and ubiquitous cultural technique of the Early Modern period, and one that contributed decisively to shaping that epoch. The SPP 2130 takes current translation studies theories as its point of departure, historicizes them, and applies them to Early Modern translation phenomena. It combines philological, anthropological, and societal translation concepts to develop a definition of translation that lends itself well to an interdisciplinary approach and provides a workable basis not only for the study of languages and literatures, but also for the scholarly investigation of images, music, and history. The graduated conception of translation makes it possible to take widely differing translation methods and practices into account and to examine not only inter- and intralingual translations but also intermedial, intercultural, and performative translation processes.

The relationship between translation and adaptation has remained problematic despite the appearance of two books on the subject. The difficulty lies in understanding how both terms are culturally constructed and change over space and time. Chapter 28 suggests that there is no absolute distinction between the two; to look at the relationship between translation and adaptation requires us to study cultural policies and the way creative workers respond to them, and to understand how readers over time have reinterpreted the two terms. The essay considers the lessons ecological models of learning in collaborative micro-cultures have to offer adaptation scholars and translation scholars alike.

Research capacity development is essential for quality and cost-effective healthcare, and well-prepared healthcare professionals. This case study used an exploratory design to gain insight into the contributions that a novice researcher programme makes towards research capacity development. Data were collected from reports to the board of a professional organisation acting as custodian of the project and three reflection workshops. The case was deductively analysed using the literature on research capacity development as the point of departure. The Cooke integrated framework for research capacity building in healthcare was used to evaluate the development that took place. The findings of the analysis are described and discussed according to the eight dimensions of the Cooke integrated framework indicating that this novice programme fulfilled all the dimensions of the framework.

This article explores the political and ethical implications of performance representing the ongoing realities of migration in contemporary Britain. Using Good Chance Theatre's The Jungle (2018) as its point of departure, the article problematizes the use of dramaturgies of proximity to confect simplistic notions of empathy as tantamount to political change. In a Brechtian vein, the article argues for modes of distanciation to foster critical engagement among audiences at the site of contemporary performance on migration. Focusing upon the production's West End transfer, its use of immersive strategies and its use of a comedic model to address ongoing issues in migration, this article finds that such strategies are not as politically transgressive as marketing and critical reception often contend them to be, with the onus of responsibility placed solely upon the individual spectator.

This article investigates the Chinese director Li Shaohong’s film Bloody Morning (1992), which was adapted from Gabriel García Márquez’s novella Chronicle of a Death Foretold (1981), and the Chinese philosophical and cultural tradition that shaped this case of adaptation. By incorporating the Colombian story, Li Shaohong expressed her concern about China’s backwards rural areas. Her adaptation localizes and incorporates the foreignness of the source text to meet the ideological and aesthetic horizons of expectation and the common concerns of her Chinese audience. This article argues that the director’s domestication has its philosophical and cultural roots in China’s history of war against foreign aggression, although the Chinese film has nothing to do with war against foreign powers.
