Diverse repertoires of hypervariable immunoglobulin receptors (TCR and BCR) recognize antigens in the adaptive immune system. The development of immunoglobulin receptor repertoire sequencing methods makes it possible to perform repertoire-wide disease association studies of antigen receptor sequences. We developed a statistical framework for associating receptors to disease from only a small cohort of patients, with no need for a control cohort. Our method successfully identifies previously validated Cytomegalovirus and type 1 diabetes responsive receptors.

Type 1 (necrotic) fairy rings in turfgrass result in dead or badly damaged grass. This type of fairy ring is a severe problem on golf course greens as they interfere with the aesthetics and playability of the putting surface. In Florida, Lycoperdon spp., basidiomycetes that produce puffball mushrooms, have been implicated as a common cause of Type 1 fairy rings on hybrid bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon × C. transvaalensis) putting greens. The fungicide flutolanil has basidiomycetes as the sole fungal target. It is also the only carboxin-related fungicide registered for use on turfgrass. Two experiments were conducted to examine the effect of flutolanil as a curative and preventive treatment for fairy ring caused by Lycoperdon. One experiment, established after the rings were present, determined that flutolanil significantly reduced mushroom production. The second experiment was conducted on a golf course that had experienced Type 1 fairy rings previously. One-half of each of nine putting greens was treated with flutolanil on a preventive basis. The other half of each green served as an untreated control. Type 1 fairy rings, due to Lycoperdon, developed only on the untreated control half of each green. These experiments confirm that flutolanil does have curative and preventive activity against Lycoperdon spp. that cause Type 1 fairy rings.

Keratitis is an inflammation of the cornea, which can lead to corneal opacification or ulceration. The most common cause of infectious keratitis is herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). Noninfectious corneal infiltrates related to trauma, collagen vascular disease, autoimmune inflammation, vasculitis, or atopy (which predisposes to HSV keratitis) must be considered. HSV-associated stromal keratitis is the most common cause of infectious corneal blindness in the United States, yet its presentation can be fairly subtle. For this reason, symptoms out of proportion to exam findings or a history concerning for viral infection is an indication for prompt referral to ophthalmology. Topical antibiotic drops achieve high tissue concentrations and are the treatment of choice. Empiric coverage should be prescribed and tailored later under the care of an ophthalmologist. Other keys to effective treatment include discontinuing contact lens use and protecting the eye with a rigid shield without a patch, as patching provides a reservoir for infection.

Truncus arteriosus communis (TAC) is a rare heart disorder with the prevalence of approximately 1%, mostly in male newborns with congenital heart defect (CHD). In this disease, aorta and pulmonary artery have not separated during fetal development and both originate jointly from a truncal vessel. In addition, various disorders are reported as associations of mitral and tricuspid valve defects, atrial septal defect (ASD), pulmonary hypertension, increase in heart rate and discharge syndrome. Common arterial trunk (persistent truncus arteriosus) is a rare, congenital heart anomaly and characterized by Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), single truncal valve, and a common ventricular outflow tract. We reported a case of truncus arteriosus type 1 in the fetus of a 28 years-old G2-P1-L1 pregnant female at 24 weeks of gestational age with large sub truncul VSD, truncal overriding, and main pulmonary artery bifurcation to the right and left pulmonary arteries.
