Abstract. Pulse volume (PV) and its related measures, such as modified normalized pulse volume (mNPV), direct-current component (DC), and pulse rate (PR), derived from the finger-photoplethysmogram (FPPG), are useful psychophysiological measures. Although considerable uncertainties exist in finger-photoplethysmography, little is known about the extent of the adverse effects on the measures. In this study, we therefore examined the inter-method reliability of each index across sensor positions and light intensities, which are major disturbance factors of FPPG. From the tips of the index fingers of 12 participants in a resting state, three simultaneous FPPGs having overlapping optical paths were recorded, with their light intensity being changed in three steps. The analysis revealed that the minimum values of three coefficients of Cronbach’s α for ln PV, ln mNPV, ln DC, and PR across positions were .948, .850, .922, and 1.000, respectively, and that those across intensities were .774, .985, .485, and .998, respectively. These findings suggest that ln mNPV and PR can be used for psychophysiological studies irrespective of minor differences in sensor attachment positions and light source intensity, whereas and ln DC can also be used for such studies but under the condition of light intensity being fixed.

Cultures of Botryodiplodia theobromae Pat. produced pycnidia abundantly on several media under continuous irradiation with fluorescent light. The fungus did not sporulate when grown in darkness. Irradiation of cultures with a light intensity of 15 foot-candles for 4 days was sufficient to stimulate pycnidial production, but for appreciable sporulation to occur over the same exposure period, higher light intensities are required. Irradiation of cultures through glass color filters showed that long-wave ultraviolet radiation stimulated sporulation.

Bacterial phototaxis was first recognized over a century ago, but the method by which such small cells can sense the direction of illumination has remained puzzling. The unicellular cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 moves with Type IV pili and measures light intensity and color with a range of photoreceptors. Here, we show that individual Synechocystis cells do not respond to a spatiotemporal gradient in light intensity, but rather they directly and accurately sense the position of a light source. We show that directional light sensing is possible because Synechocystis cells act as spherical microlenses, allowing the cell to see a light source and move towards it. A high-resolution image of the light source is focused on the edge of the cell opposite to the source, triggering movement away from the focused spot. Spherical cyanobacteria are probably the world’s smallest and oldest example of a camera eye.

The acceleration of flowering in barley due to the inclusion of incandescent illumination in the light source has been shown to be due to the far�red content of the light. A linear relationship between floral development and intensity of far�red light in a 16�hr photoperiod has been established with the cultivar CI5611. Barley appears to be relatively unresponsive to blue light, however.

As a basis for breeding cvs adapted to flowering in winter light conditions, the growth of hybrid tea rose seedlings under controlled conditions was studied. Irradiance varied from 4-24 W/m2, day length was 8 h, temperature 21 deg C. Like cvs, the seedlings sometimes aborted the flower bud at low light intensity. With increasing irradiances, the following phenomena were observed: the juvenile period of the seedlings shortened; plants were longer at bud formation, at first flowering and at flower bud abortion; leaf area and the number of petals increased. Leaf number was constant at all irradiances. Flowering seedlings were smaller at bud formation, but taller at actual flowering than blind ones. Blind seedlings had fewer leaves with a smaller area. The use of artificial illumination in entomological studies is extensive. Incandescent and fluorescent lights are used in mass-rearing insects necessary for physiological and ecological studies, and in photoperiod-controlled as well as in electrophysiological experiments.One of the main problems facing investigators in the interpretation of their results or in comparing these to preceding reports is the plethora of ways in which experimental conditions involving light are reported. Here are some examples: “The ants were kept under fluorescent light from 0800 to 2000 hours; light intensity on the ants was about 400 lux” (McCluskey 1965).

Morphogenesis of Dollard red clover clones has provided indirect evidence that endogenous auxin level and, or, sensitivity of response of tissues to auxin vary according to light and temperature and as a function of genotype.The amount of growth and development was less in autotetraploid than in diploid plants.Root formation on propagules was influenced by relatively short-term different daylength pretreatments of intact plants; also, by the daylength and light intensity imposed during rooting.Under reduced light intensity extension growth already initiated was increased and this was related to increased "sensitivity" of growth response of stems and petioles to applied auxin.Morphogenetic effects relatively similar to those caused, respectively, by shortening the daylength and by lengthening the daylength resulted from antiauxin (TIBA) as compared with auxin (IAA) treatments.Concentrations of IAA that were primarily stimulatory to growth under shorter daylengths were inhibitory under continuous light. The primary stimulatory effect of IAA was on bud formation under SD but on stem elongation under LD.The relatively similar and additive effects of photoperiod, applied auxin, and cold pretreatment are discussed. It is postulated that in red clover a greater endogenous diffusible auxin level is required for optimum formation of stems and inflorescences than for buds and roots.Manipulation of light and temperature and the use of growth regulators provide added precision in the control of growth and development in red clover.
