Assuming the typical colon bacillus and the typical typhoid bacillus to represent the types of this group that present the greatest divergences in biological peculiarities, we conclude, as others also have done, that there is a series of closely related forms that may be regarded as intermediate or transitional and which serve to establish a biological relationship, either near or remote, between these two typical members. From our own studies we are inclined to regard the typical colon bacillus as the type of this group, for the reason that its functional equilibrium, as observed in the intestine, is so permanent a quality that it may readily be perpetuated under what is ordinarily regarded as favorable artificial circumstances, and that with the continuance of such conditions there is no conspicuous tendency on the part of this organism to deviate from what we regard as its norm; whereas, on the other hand, with all the other members of this group with which we have worked, there is not only a lack of uniformity in the adjustment of the functions, but such as exists is readily disturbed under artificial environment; though it must be borne in mind that even with the typical colon bacillus we have also shown functional modifications to be possible under particular conditions. When the members of the colon group are cultivated under circumstances favorable to the development of both the function of fermentation and that of proteolysis, fermentation invariably takes precedence and no evidence of proteolysis is manifested until after fermentation has ceased. The cultivation of all the members of the colon group under circumstances that favor the development of one function, viz. that of proteolysis, at the expense of another, viz. that of fermentation, results first in an apparent increase of vigor; but this is of temporary duration and is quickly followed by the decline and death of the cell. The result of this increased activity of the proteolytic function is the formation of much larger amounts of indol by typical colon cultures than has ever been obtained by us by any other method. By the method of experimentation through which we were enabled to accentuate the proteolytic activity of the typical colon bacillus, as caused by an increase of indol formation, we have also induced the function of indol formation not only in atypical colon bacilli that had been devoid of it, but in every specimen of typical typhoid bacilli to which we had access as well. We feel justified in regarding one of the differential tests between the typhoid and colon bacillus, namely that of indol formation on the part of the latter and the absence of this function from the former, as of questionable value, for the reason, as shown above, that by particular methods of cultivation indol production has been shown to accompany the development of a number of specimens that we have every reason to regard as genuine typhoid bacilli. As a result of our own experiments, together with the observations of others, there can be no doubt that the bacillus coli communis at times possesses pathogenic properties, and that by artificial methods of treatment it may often be brought from a condition of benignity to one of virulence. The spleen of a typhoid patient has always been regarded as the only trustworthy source from which to obtain the typical typhoid bacillus. While we believe this to be true, still our investigations show that other members of the colon group may also be present in this viscus; in fact, from such spleens we have isolated practically all of the varieties of this group with which we are acquainted. From our experience, the value of the serum test for the differentiation of typhoid and colon bacilli would seem to be questionable. We are inclined, however, to attribute the irregularities recorded above as due more to the method of application than to defects of the principles involved; for, as stated, by the use of dried blood, as in our experiments, it is not possible to make the test with constant and accurate, or even approximately accurate, dilutions of the serum. Our irregularities may be in part due to this defect. We therefore lay less stress upon this than upon the other features of our work.

The harsh climatic conditions of the coast of the Tatar Strait make explainable the large number of patients with frostbite who passed under our supervision during the winter of 1935-36 and amounted to 2.8% (26 people) of the total contingent of inpatients. The variety of recommended methods for treating frostbite, on the one hand, and the relatively long recovery period for all of them, on the other hand, made us take a critical approach to the proposed methods of treatment. All currently existing methods are reduced to the treatment of frostbite areas with bandages; and on the locus morbi apply indifferent or slightly disinfecting ointments, or a similar property of a powder, or wipes moistened with slightly disinfecting solutions, for example, Sol. kalii hyperm. 1: 1000. The apparent similarity of the external manifestations of frostbite and burns inspired us with the idea of ​​conducting frostbite therapy in an "open way", which has long occupied a well-deserved place in the treatment of burns.

The treatment of inflammatory diseases of the female genitalia has long been one of the most important tasks of the gynecologist. With the development of surgery, surgical methods of treatment began to be applied: exudates were removed, the uterus and inflamed appendages were extirpated, etc.; but the danger of surgical intervention on the one hand, and on the other - the severe consequences of removal of organs such as ovaries, especially in young women - forced gynecologists to spend much effort in discovering and improving non-operative methods of treatment of inflammatory diseases of the female genital parts. Among these methods, physical methods such as water, mud, light baths, massage, etc., as well as those related to electricity have long been prominent.

Background. This study was undertaken to determine relative contributions of phosphorylation and oxidation to the increased activity of calcium/calmodulin-stimulated protein kinase II (CaMKII) in juveniles with cardiac myocyte dysfunction due to increased pressure overload. Methods. Juvenile rats underwent abdominal aortic constriction to induce heart failure. Four weeks after surgery, rats were then randomly divided into two groups: one group given valsartan (HF + Val) and the other group given placebo (HF + PBO). Simultaneously, the sham-operated rats were randomly given valsartan (Sham + Val) or placebo (Sham + PBO). After 4 weeks of treatment, Western blot analysis was employed to quantify CaMKII and relative calcium handling proteins (RyR2 and PLN) in all groups. Results. The deteriorated cardiac function was reversed by valsartan treatment. In ventricular muscle cells of group HF + PBO, Thr287 phosphorylation of CaMKII and S2808 phosphorylation of RyR2 and PLN were increased and S16 phosphorylation of PLN was decreased compared to the other groups, while Met281 oxidation was not significantly elevated. In addition, these changes in the expression of calcium handling proteins were ameliorated by valsartan administration. Conclusions. The phosphorylation of Thr286 is associated with the early activation of CaMKII rather than the oxidation of Met281.

69 young men with obesity manifesting at puberty have been examined. The average age was 19,22±0,26. 17 healthy young men, whose average age was 22 ± 0,72 years old, constituted a control group. The examined were divided according to their blood pressure (BP): the first subgroup included 36 young men with normal blood pressure, the other subgroup included 33 young men with arterial hypertension. Levels of blood lipid spectrum, levels of leptin, resistin, adiponectin, insulin in serum, urinary metanephrine excretion were measured. We obtained the following results: young men with obesity identified atherogenic changes in lipid metabolism, insulin resistance and compensatory hyperinsulinemia. Regardless of the level of blood pressure they showed a significant increase in leptin levels. In the subgroup of patients with hypertension we found increased urinary excretion of metanephrine, indicating increased activity of the sympathoadrenal system and its involvement in the formation of hypertension. The level of adiponectin in the surveyed tended to decrease, more pronounced in the combination of obesity and hypertension.

Previous research recognized that humans could extract statistical regularities of the environment to automatically predict upcoming events. However, it has remained unexplored how the brain encodes the distribution of statistical regularities if it continuously changes. To investigate this question, we devised an fMRI paradigm where participants (N = 32) completed a visual four-choice reaction time (RT) task consisting of statistical regularities. Two types of blocks involving the same perceptual elements alternated with one another throughout the task: While the distribution of statistical regularities was predictable in one block type, it was unpredictable in the other. Participants were unaware of the presence of statistical regularities and of their changing distribution across the subsequent task blocks. Based on the RT results, although statistical regularities were processed similarly in both the predictable and unpredictable blocks, participants acquired less statistical knowledge in the unpredictable as compared with the predictable blocks. Whole-brain random-effects analyses showed increased activity in the early visual cortex and decreased activity in the precuneus for the predictable as compared with the unpredictable blocks. Therefore, the actual predictability of statistical regularities is likely to be represented already at the early stages of visual cortical processing. However, decreased precuneus activity suggests that these representations are imperfectly updated to track the multiple shifts in predictability throughout the task. The results also highlight that the processing of statistical regularities in a changing environment could be habitual.

As any new method of treatment, gravidanotherapy is met with varying opinions. Some expect "miracles" from this method of treatment, believing that gravidanotherapy has found a new all-encompassing, excluding all other methods of treatment. On the other hand, there is an undeniable tendency to downplay or even completely deny the importance of gravidanotherapy. Finally, some authors consider gravidanotherapy as a method giving only subjective improvement of patients' well-being, the success of which is based on mass psychotherapy. Meanwhile, there is no doubt that gravidan, given its composition, should have a significant effect on the human body. It is only necessary that clinical observations and experimental verification give an unbiased assessment of the action of the drug and determine the place of gravidanotherapy in the arsenal of means of modern medicine.

AbstractNowadays, medical simulators and computer simulation programs are used to train various skills required in medicine. The development of medicine, including orthopedics and rehabilitation, has meant that resident physicians, within a much shorter period of time, must acquire the knowledge and skills that their older colleagues gained over years, learning as they operated on patients. For this reason, simulation very often helps the doctor and others engaged in health care train some techniques necessary during the work before they start working in a clinical environment. They have a chance of fine-tuning certain skills under nonclinical environment. On the other hand, simulation techniques are used in medical scientific research to know and explain the different biological processes that can be used for better patient treatment in the future. In this paper (Part I), the authors focused on the presentation of different types of simulators for the following purposes: test (conducted under laboratory conditions), training (incorporated into school, universities syllabus), diagnostic and therapeutic (within the hospital, clinics, private medical practice).

Redundancy is a fundamental characteristic of many biological processes such as those in the genetic, visual, muscular, and nervous systems, yet its driven mechanism has not been fully comprehended. Until recently, the only understanding of redundancy is as a mean to attain fault tolerance, which is reflected in the design of many man-made systems. On the contrary, our previous work on redundant sensing (RS) has demonstrated an example where redundancy can be engineered solely for enhancing accuracy and precision. The design was inspired by the binocular structure of human vision, which we believe may share a similar operation. In this letter, we present a unified theory describing how such utilization of redundancy is feasible through two complementary mechanisms: representational redundancy (RPR) and entangled redundancy (ETR). We also point out two additional examples where our new understanding of redundancy can be applied to justify a system's superior performance. One is the human musculoskeletal system (HMS), a biological instance, and the other is the deep residual neural network (ResNet), an artificial counterpart. We envision that our theory would provide a framework for the future development of bio-inspired redundant artificial systems, as well as assist studies of the fundamental mechanisms governing various biological processes.

Previous reports have shown a stimulatory effect of vasopressin (VP) on Na-K-ATPase and rBSC-1 expression and activity. Whether these VP-dependent mechanisms are operating in vivo in physiological conditions as well as in chronic renal failure (CRF) has been less well studied. We measured ATPase expression and activity and rBSC-1 expression in the outer medulla of controls and moderate CRF rats both before and under in vivo inhibition of VP by OPC-31260, a selective V2-receptor antagonist. OPC-31260 decreased Na-K-ATPase activity from 11.2 ± 1.5 to 3.7 ± 0.8 in controls ( P < 0.05) and from 19.0 ± 0.8 to 2.9 ± 0.5 μmol Pi · mg protein−1 · h−1 in moderate CRF rats ( P < 0.05). CRF was associated with a significant increase in Na-K-ATPase activity ( P < 0.05). Similarly, CRF was also associated with a significant increase in Na-K-ATPase expression to 164.4 ± 21.5% compared with controls ( P < 0.05), and OPC-31260 decreased Na-K-ATPase expression in both controls and CRF rats to 57.6 ± 9.5 and 105.3 ± 10.9%, respectively ( P < 0.05). On the other hand, OPC-31260 decreased rBSC-I expression in both controls and CRF rats to 60.8 ± 6.5 and 30.0 ± 6.9%, respectively ( P < 0.05), and was not influenced by CRF (95.7 ± 5.2%). We conclude that 1) endogenous VP modulated Na-K-ATPase and rBSC-1 in both controls and CRF; and 2) CRF was associated with increased activity and expression of the Na-K-ATPase in the outer medulla, in contrast to the unaltered expression of the rBSC-1. The data suggest that endogenous VP could participate in the regulation of electrolyte transport at the level of the outer medulla.
