Abstract When we speak, we do not only produce a chain of words and utterances, but we also perform various body movements that convey information. These movements are usually made with the hands and are what McNeill (1992) terms gestures. Although gesturing is universal, the way we gesture and the meanings we associate with gestures vary cross-culturally. Using a qualitative approach, this paper describes and illustrates the forms and functions of pointing gestures used by Malay speakers. The data discussed is based on 10 video recorded direction-giving interactions. Findings show that pointing among Malay speakers is achieved through the use of various manual pointing gestures and other bodily actions involving gaze, torso and head movements, which communicate distinct functions. This study has indicated that although some gesture forms and functions are shared among Malay speakers and other cultural groups, some direction-giving pointing behaviors are Malay specific.

Studies on Therapeutic Communication, especially its relationship to Islamic communication, are still rarely found in the field. This study aims to see how the practice of Islamic communication can be done well by doctors and nurses. This research uses a qualitative approach. The values of Islamic communication in Therapeutic communication can be seen from the way communication is carried out by doctors and nurses with their patients through ethics and good language. The implementation model of Islamic communication in therapeutic communication produces a marker communication model, that is, communication carried out on the basis of the awareness of the medical team. This communication model is not formally implemented, but in substance has similarities with the value of Islamic communication.

Background: Meditation as it is currently known is an ancient practice, which can be traced back to Asian traditions. With the proper technique, a state of physical relaxation and respiratory balance can be reached naturally and spontaneously. This paper considers meditative labyrinth walking to be a unique expression of Dr. Lauren Artress’ work, who studied and applied the image of the labyrinth on the floor of the Chartres Cathedral in France. Methods: This study used a qualitative approach. It is a cross-sectional non-randomized study, conducted at an institute for psychotherapies with a sample of 30 participants. Results: 99% of the group reported feeling emotional distress caused by the feeling of a longer walk on the way out, 21% reported feeling the same while walking the path, and 41% at the beginning. The remaining participants felt lost in time and space. Conclusions: This study showed that the practice of labyrinth walking is a physical, emotional, and sensory experience. On the clinical level, correlating this experience to the planning of care seems to be particularly relevant.

Abstract This paper offers a sociolinguistic analysis of the consonants (s) and (d) in the coda position in the city of Madrid, within the framework of the Project for the Sociolinguistic Study of Spanish from Spain and America (PRESEEA). The purpose is to illustrate how varieties of southern Castilian Spanish and those from the central and northern Peninsula converge and diverge, taking into consideration the social, political, and economic parameters that affect said processes. The diversity of patterns that coexist in the Madrid speech community reflects the city’s historic social complexity, the varied geographical origins of its migrant population, the interests that motivate each community of practice, as well as other circumstances that influence the direction of change. The analysis of (s) and (d) in coda illustrates the way in which the dynamics of variation and change in Madrid fluctuate between two poles: standardization and regionalization, the same two axes around which the community’s sociolinguistic patterns revolve.

Despite the global universality of physical space, different cultural groups vary substantially as to how they memorize it. Although European participants mostly prefer egocentric strategies (“left, right, front, back”) to memorize spatial relations, others use mostly allocentric strategies (“north, south, east, west”). Prior research has shown that some cultures show a general preference to memorize object locations and even also body movements in relation to the larger environment rather than in relation to their own body. Here, we investigate whether this cultural bias also applies to movements specifically directed at the participants’ own body, emphasizing the role of ego. We show that even participants with generally allocentric biases preferentially memorize self-directed movements using egocentric spatial strategies. These results demonstrate an intricate system of interacting cultural biases and momentary situational characteristics.

This article is based on a secondary analysis of non-responses (NR) and “don't know” (DK)-responses in two French surveys on sexual behaviour. The analysis is situated within a problem framework focusing on dissociating the respondent's ignorance concerning an experience or knowledge of a behaviour and the way they are measured by means of DKs and NRs. First, the specificity and diversity of the information collected in these surveys is described. Then the plurality of signification of non-responses (ignorance, embarrassment, selective amnesia) and of DKs is compared and the role of each type of response in the exploitation of survey data discussed. The article ends with a plea in favour of a qualitative approach to such responses in quantitative surveys.

Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study seeks to reveal the basic framework of the culture of manners in Islamic universities in South Kalimantan, especially in the three Islamic Colleges in South Kalimantan. The adab was analyzed by pivoting on the values in the Ta'līm al-Muta'allim book. The results of this study also revealed comprehensively the perceptions of lecturers and students on manners in the learning process, the values of adab were analyzed using a value analysis approach using data collection techniques, interviews, surveys and observations. Based on the research results, it was indintified that the values of adab and the way of thinking of lecturers and students in the learning process are in accordance with the values of adab as stated in the Ta'līm al-Muta'allim book. The awareness to implement certain adab was based on the goals to be achieved in the learning process or in the framework of seeking knowledge. Adab also takes place in certain dimensions, such as adab to Allah and the Prophet (spiritual attitude dimension) which is the core and basis of other dimensions; adab to humans (integration of the dimensions of spiritual and social attitudes); adab to oneself and to fellow humans (integration of the dimensions of spiritual & social attitudes). Some of the values implemented in the learning process could be seen in the doctrinal process of seeking knowledge conveyed by several lecturers to students, lecturers 'exposure to students regarding the virtues of studying, the students' intentions to study, the way students chose friends in association, how the students respected the lecturers, time management in learning, and some implementation of values that were in line with what was stated in the Ta'līm al-Muta'allim book.
