The sea-level muon momentum spectrum in t,he range 0'7-30 GeV/c has been measured at Nottingham, England, at zenith angles of 0,30 W., and 45 oW., based on 1052, 1010, and 1033 particles respectively. Agreement is found at 0 with the results of Owen and Wilson (1955) and disagreement with those of Caro, Parry, and Rathgeber (1951). The same form of disagreement occurs with the results of Moroney and Parry (1954) at 30 obtained using the same instrument as Caro, Parry, and Rathgeber. Within the statistical accuracy of the experi~ent satisfactory agreement is found with the theories based on either single level or extended production of the muons.

The differential and integral range spectra of the hard component of cosmic rays in water have been measured down to a depth of 183 m. of water, and the integral results confirm the work of Ehmert (1937) and Wilson (1938) in this region. A lack of statistical accuracy in the differential measurements prevents the possible observation of an anomaly corresponding to 25 BeV./c. momentum. A comparison of the range and momentum spectra on the basis of the energy loss data of Halpern and Hall shows satisfactory agreement. The absolute value of the differential intensity is found to be 20 per cent. higher than that given by Rossi (1948) but agrees with the more recent result of York (1952).

The pion and kaon spectra in the top of the atmosphere have been derived from the satellite data of cosmic ray nucleons by using the Bose-type distribution of secondary mesons produced in the inclusive reactions p + p → π− + X and p + p → K− + X. The derived pion and kaon spectra follow the relations of the form π(Eπ) dEπ = 0.184Eπ−2.6 dEπ and K(Ek) dEk = 0.036 Ek−2.6 dEk. With the help of the diffusion equation for pions and kaons in the atmosphere, the sea level muon spectrum has been derived and the results have been compared with the magnetic spectrograph data of Allkofer, Carstensen, and Dau in the muon momentum range 15–1000 GeV/c. The sea level muon intensity arising from kaon parentage increases with energy.
