The sea-level muon momentum spectrum in t,he range 0'7-30 GeV/c has been measured at Nottingham, England, at zenith angles of 0,30 W., and 45 oW., based on 1052, 1010, and 1033 particles respectively. Agreement is found at 0 with the results of Owen and Wilson (1955) and disagreement with those of Caro, Parry, and Rathgeber (1951). The same form of disagreement occurs with the results of Moroney and Parry (1954) at 30 obtained using the same instrument as Caro, Parry, and Rathgeber. Within the statistical accuracy of the experi~ent satisfactory agreement is found with the theories based on either single level or extended production of the muons.

The construction of a cosmic-ray spark-chamber spectrometer for use in the study of the charge ratio and interactions of muons at energies up to 3 000 GeV is proposed. The apparatus will consist of a stack of interleaved spark chambers and magnetized iron plates, placed at a depth of 250 m.w.e. underground in order to remove the low-energy component of the cosmic-ray muon flux. This report gives an appraisal of the design of the apparatus and summarizes its expected performance.

Abstract. We present a review of atmospheric muon flux and energy spectrum measurements over almost six decades of muon momentum. Sea level and underground/water/ice experiments are considered. Possible sources of systematic errors in the measurements are examined. The characteristics of underground/water muons (muons in bundle, lateral distribution, energy spectrum) are discussed. The connection between the atmospheric muon and neutrino measurements are also reported.
