Understanding the impacts of fishing on the trophic structure of systems has become increasingly important because of the introduction of Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management and the legislative requirements of fisheries to demonstrate that they are not having a negative impact on other species. A biomass-based dynamic model of Jurien Bay Marine Park (∼30°S) was constructed using Ecopath to investigate the ecosystem impacts of fishing (mainly commercial rock lobster, Panulirus cygnus) in the park, as an example of the potential responses of temperate marine ecosystems in Western Australia to commercial fishing. A simulated 50% reduction in fishing mortality for commercial finfish predicted that after 20 years, the biomass of important fished species (i.e. Pagrus auratus and Choerodon rubescens) would increase by up to 30%. A simulated total fishing closure resulted in much larger (2.5–8 fold) increases in targeted populations, but did not result in any predicted cascading effects on grazing invertebrates and benthic primary producers. The simulations suggest that the structure of this ecosystem is characterised more by bottom-up than top-down processes; i.e. benthic primary production is a major limiting factor. The present study identified trophic linkages and ecosystem processes such as the role of both low and high trophic-level groups and the impact of fishing mortality in the marine park, an essential step towards distinguishing the impacts of fishing from those attributable to natural or other human-induced changes.

The efficacy of cross-protection at mitigating the impact of Grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV) on grapevines (Vitis vinifera) was assessed in two naturally infected vineyard sites. Test vines consisted of scions grafted onto rootstocks that were healthy or infected by mild protective strains GFLV-GHu or Arabis mosaic virus (ArMV)-Ta. Challenge GFLV infection via the nematode Xiphinema index was monitored over nine consecutive years in control and ArMV-Ta cross-protected vines by double-antibody sandwich–enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using GFLV-specific antibodies, and in GFLV-GHu cross-protected vines by characterizing the coat protein gene of superinfecting isolates by immunocapture–reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism. Results were consistent with a significantly reduced challenge infection rate in cross-protected vines compared with control vines, more so in those protected with GFLV-GHu (19 versus 90%) than with ArMV-Ta (40 versus 65% in field A and 63 versus 90% in field B). However, the two mild strains significantly reduced fruit yield by 9% (ArMV-Ta) and 17% (GFLV-GHu) over 8 years and had a limited effect on fruit quality. Therefore, in spite of a great potential at reducing the incidence of challenge field isolates, cross-protection with natural mild protective strains GFLV-GHu and ArMV-Ta is not attractive to control GFLV because the negative impact on yield is a limiting factor for its deployment.

Cod (Gadus morhua) are preyed upon by grey seals (Halichoerus grypus), and there is debate over the impact this has had on the decline of stocks and their prospects for recovery. We analysed a depleted stock to the West of Scotland and show that seal predation rate is consistent with a type II functional response. Forward projections of a model including the functional response under varying levels of fishing and seal population size suggest that stock recovery is possible under current conditions, but there is a modest probability that the stock will decline further in both the short and long term. The potential recovery is fragile and sensitive to relatively small increases in either fishing or seal predation. Forward projection models that exclude the functional response estimate a lower probability of stock decline and may underestimate the risk to the stock. At low stock sizes and high fishing mortality rates, functional response models project slower recovery but the opposite is true at low fishing mortality.


<em>Abstract.—</em>We examined the demography of American eels <em>Anguilla rostrata </em>at seven Maryland sites, including six Chesapeake Bay estuaries and one bay adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean. Eels caught by baited pots in estuaries tended to be young and small with rapid growth rates. Large eels were a higher proportion of catch in the Atlantic bay, where exploitation started only recently, than in heavily fished Chesapeake estuaries. Histological examinations indicated that all eels longer than 40 cm were female, but smaller eels were female, male, or undifferentiated in roughly equal proportions. Some eels were captured in commercial fishing gear after only one year in continental waters. Total mortality (<EM>Z</EM>), including postspawning mortality of emigrants, was estimated from catch curve analysis, giving a range of 0.62 to 1.44. Instantaneous natural mortality (<EM>M</EM>) was calculated as 0.25, from 3/maximum age (12). Instantaneous fishing mortality, <EM>Z</EM>–<EM>M</EM>, ranged from 0.37 to 1.19 and, in one case, only five age classes were observed. We considered the impact of latitude, habitat productivity, density, sex ratio, and fishing on eel populations. We postulate that heavy fishing pressure reduced the density and modal size of eels in surveyed estuaries. Changes in management policy to reduce fishing mortality and increase spawning emigration are recommended.

The Australian bat Tadarida australis has a peculiar geographical niche that involves a continental-scale movement of over 10° of latitude in Western Australia. Its range expands northward by up to 1200 km for the winter and contracts southward for the summer. Its summer range limit correlates with an interaction of temperature and humidity, best summarised by atmospheric enthalpy. Its winter distribution is expanded northward within the enthalpy threshold, but appears to be further restricted in some areas by an unknown factor that may be biotic. We propose a potential competitor and a potential predator that may have strongly negative interactions in these regions. The 1% of records that are beyond the enthalpy envelope are from the change-over months and may be an artefact of year-to-year climatic variation. Three climatic thresholds enclose the enthalpy envelope: average annual rainfall >10 mm per month and <50 mm per month, and average overnight minimum temperature <20°C. Current literature relates migration of temperate-zone bats to resource availability as a consequence of changing season. We identify a tight correlation with atmospheric enthalpy that points to dissipation of flight muscle heat as a limiting factor.

In this study, we examined the impact of a stuttering disorder on children (n=50) and adolescents (n=45) living in Western Australia. We compared the reactions and experiences of children and adolescents who stutter to children and adolescents who do not stutter. We compared the participants who stuttered and the fluent participants using adapted versions of the Overall Assessment of the Speaker’s Experience of Stuttering (OASES). We also examined the relationship between biopsychosocial impact and stuttered speech frequency. We saw higher levels of adverse impact in young people who stuttered compared to their fluent peers. In addition, we found moderate correlations between OASES scores and stuttered speech frequency in children. These findings provided a baseline for establishing the degree of negative impact that a stuttering disorder may bring about in children and adolescents. The experiences of young people who stuttered were significantly different from the experiences of young people who were typically fluent. These findings reinforce the notion that stuttering is a disorder that can lead to negative impact for young people.

This research aims to (1) identify and review strategic priority issues of tourism in Bolaang Mongondow Regency, (2) identify, assess and analyze the impact of RTRW Program of tourism designation in BolaangMongondow Regency on the environment, (3) review efforts to minimize the negative impact that will occur as a result of the implementation of the Program in the area of tourism designation in Bolaang Mongondow District. The research was conducted in Bolaang Mongondow Regency of North Sulawesi Province, from September to October 2017. This research uses purposive sampling method with semi-detailed method based on field observation and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and key informant interview. Sources of data obtained are: primary data through interviews with key informants and implementation of Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Research results show that 1) The priority strategic issues of the tourism designation area in Bolaang Mongondow District are biodiversity,waste, distruption of security and comfort, Increasing prosperity, Damage of mangrove and coral reefs. (2) The positive impact is the increase of people's welfare with the business opportunities around the tourism area. Negative impacts caused by the implementation of the tourism area programming program in Bolaang Mongondow District are biodiversity, waste, disruption of security and comfort, mangrove damage and coral reefs. (3) Mitigation efforts to minimize negative impacts are making local regulations on the protection of biodiversity around the tourism area, preparing shelters and processing solid and liquid waste from tourism activities, preparing security officers and disaster management team teams around the tourism area, local regulations as a limiting factor of diving and coastal tourism activities to minimize mangrove and coral reef damage.

The hypothesis that predation by feral cats and introduced foxes reduces population sizes of small, native vertebrates was supported by results of a predator-removal experiment at Heirisson Prong, a semi-arid site in Western Australia. The methods of control used against cats and foxes to protect native mammals reintroduced to Heirisson Prong produced three broad ‘predator zones’: a low-cat and low-fox zone, where foxes were eradicated and spotlight counts of cats declined after intensive cat control; a high-cat and low-fox zone where spotlight counts of cats increased three-fold after foxes were controlled; and a zone where numbers of cats and foxes were not manipulated. Small mammals and reptiles were monitored for one year before and three years after predator control began. Captures of small mammals increased in the low-cat and low-fox zone, but where only foxes were controlled captures of small mammals declined by 80%. In the absence of cat and fox control, captures of small mammals were variable over the sampling period, lower than where both cats and foxes were controlled, yet higher than where only foxes were controlled. The capture success of reptiles did not appear to be related to changes in predator counts. This study presents the first experimental evidence from mainland Australia that feral cats can have a negative impact on populations of small mammals.

Recently, the number of published works devoted to the processes of synanthropization of fauna, is growing like an avalanche, which indicates the extreme urgency of this theme. In our view, the process of forming devices to coexist with human and the results of his life reflects the general tandency of the modern nature evolution. Urbanization is characteristic for such a specific group of animals like amphibians, the evidence of which are numerous literature data. Many researchers use this group to assess the bioindicative quality of the environment. For this aim a variety of indicators are used: from the cellular level of life of organization up to the species composition of the group in different territories. At the same time, the interpretation of the results is not always comparable for different areas and often have significantly different interpretations by experts. Urban environment, primarily due to the contamination is extremely aggressive to amphibians. As a consequence, the urban populations of amphibians may be a change in the demographic structure, affecting the reproductive ability of the population, the disappearance of the most sensitive species or individuals, resizing animals, the appearance of abnormalities in the development, etc. At the same time play an important amphibians in the ecosystems of cities, and some species in these conditions even feel relatively comfortable. Therefore, it is interesting to understand the mechanisms of self-sustaining populations of amphibians in urban environments. To assess the impact of natural and anthropogenic factors on the development of amphibian populations were used cognitive modeling using the program Vensim PLE. Cognitive map of the model for urban and suburban habitat conditions were the same. The differences concerned the strength of connections between individual factors (migration, fertility, pollution) and their orientation. In general, factors like pollution, parasites, predators had negative impact on the population, reducing its number. The birth rate, food and migration contributed to raising number of individuals. Some of the factors affected on the strength to of each other as well: the majority of the factors affected the structure of the population, had an influence on the fertility. Thanks to it the model reflects the additive effect of complex of factors on the subsequent status of the population. Proposed and analyzed four scenarios differing strength and duration of exposure. In the first scenario, a one-time contamination occurs and not subsequently repeated. The second and third scenario assumes half board contamination, 1 year (2 scenario) and two years (scenario 3). In the fourth scenario, the pollution affected the population of amphibians constantly. In accordance with the results of simulation, much weaker than the natural populations respond to pollution - have them as an intensive population growth and its disappearance at constant pollution is slow. Changes to other parameters of the model showed that this pollution is the decisive factor -only the constant action leads to a lethal outcome for the populations. All other components of the model have a corrective effect on the population dynamics, without changing its underlying trand. In urban areas due to the heavy impact of pollution maintaining the population is only possible thanks to the migration process – the constant replenishment of diminishing micropopulations of natural reserves. This confirms the assumption that the form of existence metapopulations lake frog in the city. In order to maintain the number of amphibians in urban areas at a high level it is necessary to maintain existing migration routes and the creation of new ones. Insular nature of the placement of suitable habitats in urban areas causes the metapopulation structure of the types of urbanists. Therefore, the process of urbanization is much easier for those species whicht are capable of migration in conditions of city. In the initial stages of settling the city micropopulationis formed by selective mortality of the most susceptible individuals to adverse effects. In future, maintaining the categories of individuals is provided mainly due to migration processes metapopulisation form of the species of existence is supported). It should be noted that the changes in the previous levels are always saved in future. In the case of reorganizations of individuals we of morphology can assume the existence of extremely adverse environmental conditions that threaten the extinction of the micropopulations.

The impact of the last global economic crisis (2008) on the European economy put a strain on higher education (HE), yet it also pushed the sector towards intensive reforms and improvements. This paper focuses on the “Strategy for the Development of Higher Education in the Republic of Bulgaria 2014-2020”. With a case study methodology, we explore the strategic endeavours of the Bulgarian government to comply with the European directions and to secure sustainable growth for the HE sector. Our research question is ‘How capable is the Bulgarian HE Strategy to overcome the economic and systemic restraints of Bulgarian higher education?’. Because the development of strategies for HE within the EU is highly contextual, a single qualitative case study was chosen as the research approach. HE institutions are not ivory towers, but subjects to a variety of external and internal forces. Within the EU, this is obviated by the fact that Universities obtain their funds from institutions such as governments, students and their families, donors, as well as EU-level programmes. Therefore, to explore how these pressures interact to affect strategic action on national level, the case method is well suited as it enabled us to study the phenomena thoroughly and deeply. The paper suggests the actions proposed within the Strategy have the potential to overcome the delay, the regional isolation and the negative impact of the economic crisis on the country. Nevertheless, the key elements on which the success or failure of this Strategy hinges are the control mechanisms and the approach to implementation. Shortcomings in these two aspects of strategic actions in HE seem to mark the difference between gaining long-term benefits and merely saving face in front of international institutions.

This paper has a two-fold objective: first, to examine the terms on which Pakistan receives aid and whether its debt situation is sustainable, and second, to examine the impact of aid and debt on economic growth. It is found that there is little encouraging that can be said about how the terms on which Pakistan has received aid over time have changed, and its current debt situation is not sustainable. Also reported is the analysis done elsewhere which shows that aid has a negative (Granger) causal impact on GDP, and aid has a robust negative impact on economic growth after controlling for supplyside shocks. We provide various reasons for this negative association.
