A Comparison of Copper Speciation Measurements with the Toxic Responses of Three Sensitive Freshwater Organisms

Environmental Context.A rapid Chelex resin method is shown to be a valuable speciation screening tool for use in a tiered risk assessment of copper toxicity in fresh waters. It is a more conservative measure than toxicity testing with sensitive biota, but a better indicator of toxicity than a dissolved copper measurement. Abstract.Twelve natural fresh waters with similar pH and hardness, but varying dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and copper concentrations, were assessed for (a) toxicity to an alga (Chlorella sp. 12), a cladoceran (Ceriodaphnia cf. dubia) and a bacterium (Erwinnia sp.), and (b) copper speciation using a rapid Chelex extraction method, diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) and anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV). In synthetic fresh water with no added DOC, at pH 7.0 and low hardness, the toxic responses (EC/IC50) of all three organisms to copper were similar. However, in the toxicity of copper added to natural water samples exhibited a negative linear relationship to DOC (r2 = 0.82–0.83), with respective slopes for algae, cladocerans and bacteria decreasing in the ratio 7.4 : 3.5 : 1. The marked difference in responses in the presence of natural dissolved organic matter indicated that not all of the organisms conformed to the free ion activity model (FIAM). This was confirmed by copper ion selective electrode measurement of copper ion activity. Copper toxicity to algae in the presence of DOC was overestimated by free ion activity possibly due to surface binding of DOC. Copper toxicity to the bacteria was greater than predicted and was shown to be a result of bioavailability of some copper complexes formed with organic matter. Cladocerans appear to more closely follow FIAM predictions. These findings have important implications for attempts to extend predictive models of metal toxicity beyond fish to more sensitive freshwater species. The measured labile copper concentrations of copper-spiked natural waters varied from 0 to 70% of total copper concentrations. There was no clear relationship between the three measurement techniques. Good correlations were obtained between both algal and bacterial growth inhibitions measured on copper-spiked natural waters and the corresponding Chelex-labile copper concentrations. A single natural water sample was manipulated to different pH and hardness values, spiked with copper, and tested using the above three organisms with the Chelex method. Toxicity test results generally agreed with studies performed in synthetic fresh waters, showing that the relationships between toxicity, pH and hardness were organism-specific. Chelex-labile copper was always over-predictive of toxicity but significantly better (P ≤ 0.05) than dissolved copper concentrations, as it only detects the fraction of total copper that is reactive over biologically-relevant timescales. Colloidally-bound copper and copper associated with strong ligands are not detected. The Chelex method is therefore useful as a measure where speciation is accepted in water quality regulations.

The current paper contains a synthesis of the processes of chemical auto-purification that take place in natural waters; examples of mechanisms of such processes occurring with participation of dissolved organic matter, oxidants of the biogeochemical cycle of oxygen and of transition metals including copper and iron are presented. The kinetic indicators of natural water quality are presented as well.

The objective of this study is to demonstrate the successful functionalization of the surface of a chalcogenide infrared waveguide with the ultimate goal of developing an infrared micro-sensor device. First, a polyisobutylene coating was selected by testing its physico-chemical compatibility with a Ge-Sb-Se selenide surface. To simulate the chalcogenide platform infrared sensor, the detection of benzene, toluene, and ortho-, meta- and para-xylenes was efficaciously performed using a polyisobutylene layer spin-coated on 1 and 2.5 µm co-sputtered selenide films of Ge28Sb12Se60 composition deposited on a zinc selenide prism used for attenuated total reflection spectroscopy. The thickness of the polymer coating was optimized by attenuated total reflection spectroscopy to achieve the highest possible attenuation of water absorption while maintaining the diffusion rate of the pollutant through the polymer film compatible with the targeted in situ analysis. Then, natural water, i.e., groundwater, wastewater, and seawater, was sampled for detection measurement by means of attenuated total reflection spectroscopy. This study is a valuable contribution concerning the functionalization by a hydrophobic polymer compatible with a chalcogenide optical sensor designed to operate in the mid-infrared spectral range to detect in situ organic molecules in natural water.

The paper is devoted to the development of proposals concerning the improvement of surface water bodies and the appointment of target indicators of the natural waters’ quality. The paper considers a variety of problems of preserving, restoring and improving the quality of natural surface waters: from regional features of the formation of natural water composition, to differences in the requirements for the quality of water consumed. The object of the study is the qualitative indicators of the waters of natural water bodies, and the subject of the study is the methodological approaches to the normalization of these indicators. The purpose of the work is to identify the main shortcomings in the domestic system of rationing the quality of natural waters, and to form appropriate proposals. For this purpose, the following tasks were set and solved: to review the methodological approaches to assessing and rationing the quality of natural waters used in some foreign countries and in the Russian Federation, to identify the main causes and shortcomings; to make proposals for improving the current system of water quality rationing. The result of this work is the conclusions about the lack of impact of the strategy operating in Russia in the development of schemes of complex use and protection of water objects, standards of permissible impact on water bodies, the appointment of permissible discharge limits in terms of maintaining and improving the water quality of natural water bodies. The reasons that led to this are indicated. The necessity of taking into account, in addition to the physical and chemical composition, also hydrobiological parameters is shown. It is concluded that instead of fisheries management standards, environmental standards should serve as the basis for target indicators of water quality of natural water bodies, which determine the well-being of humans and the stable functioning of aquatic ecosystems, taking into account regional factors. Proposals were made to adjust the methodological approaches to the implementation of this strategy. According to the authors, these proposals will speed up the solution of the main objectives of the strategy – the ecological improvement of water bodies, the preservation of unique aquatic ecosystems and the environmentally safe development of territories that previously experienced relatively small anthropogenic impacts (Eastern Siberia and the Far East)

The main objective of the present study is to test various methods for describing the absorption spectra of coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and to determine the numerical values of some optical parameters of CDOM in lakes with diverse water quality. First, the parameters of an exponential model in different spectral intervals were determined. In addition, the suitability of some other models for the approximation of CDOM spectra was estimated. Specific absorption coefficients of CDOM were calculated from the absorption coefficients and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations. The experimental initial data were differences between spectral attenuation coefficients of filtered and distilled water. Two datasets were used: 1) for 13 Estonian and 7 Finnish lakes (altogether 404 spectra between 350 and 700 nm) measured by the Estonian Marine Institute (EMI); 2) for 10 Finnish lakes (73 spectra) measured by the Finnish Environment Institute (FEI). The spectra of CDOM absorption coefficients (aCDOM) were calculated from experimental data taking into account the correction due to scattering properties of colloids in the filtered water. The total content of CDOM in natural waters of Estonian and Finnish lakes was expressed by means of aCDOM at the wavelength of 380 nm. It varied significantly, from 0.71 to 19.5 m−1, the mean value (of all the investigated lakes) being around 6.6 m−1. Slopes of the exponential approximation varied widely, from 0.006 to 0.03 nm−1. Averaged over all lakes values of slope for the interval 380-500 nm obtained from the EMI dataset are close to those obtained from the FEI dataset: from 0.014 nm−1 (without correction) to 0.016-0.017 nm-1 (with different types of correction). These results are in good correspondence with most published data. Attempts to describe the spectra in the region of 350-700 nm by means of hyperexponential functions (∽ exp(-αλη)) show that: (1) η < 1 (in the case of traditional exponential approximation η = 1); (2) a promising idea is to seek the best fit only for wavelengths λ > λ1, where λ1 will be chosen taking into account the real shape of aCDOM spectra. The mean value of the specific absorption coefficient (a*CDOM) at the wavelength 380 nm obtained in this study (0.44 L mg−1 m−1) is close to the values published in the literature, if we assume that a*CDOM (380) is calculated using the data of dissolved organic matter (DOM). The optically non-active fraction of DOM in our study was high and therefore a*CDOM (380) was considerably higher (1.01 L mg−1 m−1) than a*CDOM (380). The results of the present work could be used in the modeling of underwater light field as well as in the interpretation of radiation measurements and optical remote sensing results.

Abstract Lab-scale continuous operation of self forming MF and UF dynamic membranes were investigated simultaneously by applying iron oxide as an alternative treatment option in those waters having natural organic matter (NOM), iron and manganese. Both dynamic membranes gave high removal rates and effluent concentrations of pollutants were below the limit values in synthetic water. 60–62% of DOC and 75–78% of UV254 were removed in low DOC synthetic water (LS) by MF and UF dynamic membranes, respectively. Although only 42–49% of DOC and 48–53% of UV254 could be removed by MF and UF dynamic membranes, remarkable effect on fouling alleviation was observed in high DOC synthetic water (HS). Iron oxide did not enhance the removal of organic matter in low DOC natural water (LN) as much as it did in synthetic water. Iron oxide led to the removal of high molecular weight organics, thus reversible fouling reduced almost 2 orders of magnitude through both types of dynamic membranes in high DOC natural water (HN). Reversible and ireversibe resistances were reduced by iron oxide to some extent in LN. Nevertheless the effect of iron oxide on fouling alleviation was much higher in HN than LN.
