Comparison of lupin varieties for grain yield, nutritive value of stubbles, incidence of infection with Phomopsis leptostromiformis and occurrence of lupinosis

The lupin cultivars Borre, Uniwhite, Fest, Uniharvest, Weiko III, CB46 and Ultra were grown for two years at Baker's Hill, Western Australia (640 mm average rainfall). Fest gave the highest grain yield in both years but the ranking of the other cultivars differed in the two years. Grain lost at harvest varied from 24 to 860 kg ha-1, being significantly higher from Weiko Ill and CB46. The nitrogen content of the grain of Weiko III and Ultra was significanlty higher than that in all other cultivars, and the pods of Ultra had a higher nitrogen content than pods of any other cultivar. In both years the stems and pods of Weiko Ill and Ultra had significantly lower concentrations of soluble carbohydrates, the stems fewer lesions from Phomopsis, and the sheep grazing the stubbles a much lower and less severe incidence of lupinosis than on all the other cultivars. In the first year liveweight gains over 63 days ranged from 2.9 kg on Fest to 7.5 kg on Borre. In the second year, when lupinosis was severe, there was a positive correlation between its severity and concentration of copper in the liver, and a negative correlation with zinc concentration. In another experiment Ultra and Unicrop had fewer Phomopsis lesions than CB46 and sheep grazing the stubbles less liver damage. Dry ewes grazed on stubbles of Uniharvest lupins planted at three different dates and on Fest lupins barely maintained weight but those grazed on wheat stubble lost 6.5 kg in 42 days. Stubbles from Uniharvest lupins sown at four different dates in two years all produced lupinosis when fed to sheep in pens. The diet selected by sheep from the stubbles was measured in two of the experiments. In both, stem, which is the most toxic fraction, made up at least 80 per cent of the diet from the time grazing started.

A virgin Grey Wooded soil was subjected to different tillage treatments receiving various rates of nitrogen, phosphorus and lime. In a 5-year rotation of oats followed by 4 years of hay, oat forage yields with 24-inch plowing appeared to be less than those obtained with shallower tillage treatments, but the subsequent first- and second-year hay yields were substantially higher. Nitrogen and phosphorus significantly increased oat forage yields irrespective of tillage treatment. Increases in first-year hay yields due to residual phosphorus were highly significant with 12-inch and 24-inch plowing. Second-year hay yields were significantly increased by residual phosphorus on all tillage treatments with increases being in the order 12-inch plowing and disking greater than 6-inch and 24-inch plowing. Irrespective of tillage treatment, lowest hay yields were obtained in the first year of harvest. Despite the greater saturation of the sub-surface soil with bases, lime significantly increased hay yields on plots plowed to 24 inches. Whereas the legume component of the hay mixture was initially high on plots plowed to 24 inches, in the succeeding years the percentage decreased considerably. On the other hand, legume percentage, which was initially low, increased for plots that were disked or plowed to 6 inches. Plowing to a depth of 12 inches appeared to be the most satisfactory procedure in maintaining the best hay yields with a high percentage of legumes.

This field experiment examined the effects of magnesium (Mg) and phosphorus (P) fertilizers, which were given in different doses to soybean grown in different water levels, on plant water consumption, water-yield relations and grain yield factors. The experiment used a random blocks designed with three consecutive and was conducted over two years 2006 and 2007. Four different P doses (0-4-8-12 kg P da-1) and three different Mg doses (0-4-8 kg Mg da-1) were applied with three different water levels (I1, I2, I3). Cumulative pan values obtained from Class A Pan evaporation pool were applied as irrigation (I) 33% for I1, 67% for I2, 100% for I3. At the end of experiment were determined plant water consumption, water-yield relations and grain yield. At the start of irrigation, 548.00 mm, 786.00 mm and 1 017.00 mm of water were given to I1, I2 and I3 plots, respectively in the first year, and 457.98 mm, 698.02 mm and 931.00 mm irrigation water was given in the second year. Plant water consumption values (ETa) were determined as 648.00 mm, 903.00 mm and 1164.00 mm for I1, I2 and I3 parts in the first year, and 567.00 mm, 825.00 mm and 1070.00 mm in the second year. Moreover, according to experiment plots, irrigation water treatment efficiency (IWTE) varied between 0.14 and 0.53 kg m-3 in the first year and between 0.16 and 0.59 kg m-3 in the second year.

SUMMARYThe ability of two groups of six Merino wethers aged 6 and 66 months to digest a lucerne ration was examined in order to detect possible biases in the use of faecal nitrogen as a faecal index substance. Earlier work with this technique had indicated a difference in selectivity between young and older sheep. No difference in ability to digest the ration was observed and it was concluded that the earlier observation was not an artefact in the faecal nitrogen technique. Oesophageal fistulae were prepared in 120 sheep differing in breed, sex, age, strain and previous history. Determinations were made of the nitrogen content, and in one experiment of the in vitro digestibility of the diet selected by sheep grazing various pastures. Significant differences in the nitrogen content of the diet selected by sheep varying in breed, age and previous grazing history were recorded on some pastures on some occasions but not on others. No significant differences were observed between sheep varying in strain or sex. No reason could be suggested for the occasional differences between groups in the nitrogen content or digestibility of the diet selected, but it appeared unlikely that it would be a major source of variation in the productivity of the different groups at pasture.

Salmon from the East branch marked as smolts in 1934 returned as grilse in the fall of 1935, entering only the East branch up to spawning time. After October 22 more entered the West than the East branch. Female salmon tagged as adults gave evidence of remaining each in a particular "home" pool. After spawning some females dropped down to tidal pools in early November and later reascended the stream. Male salmon tagged as adults left their "home" pools, roaming up and down and even going through tidal water to the other branch; yet males came back the second year to the same pool in which they were taken (in one case repeatedly) in the first year.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to compare herbage accumulation and canopy structural characteristics during the stockpiling period of the Marandu, Piatã, Xaraés, and Paiaguás cultivars of Urochloa brizantha. The experimental design was completely randomized, with three replicates. The experiment was repeated for two years (2017 and 2018), under mechanical cutting conditions, and the canopies were stockpiled for 90 days, from March to June. In the first year, forage mass was higher for the Xaraés and Paiaguás cultivars; however, in the second year, Xaraés showed a forage mass higher than that of the other cultivars. The number of vegetative tillers at the end of the stockpiling period was higher for Paiaguás, contrary to what was observed for number of reproductive tillers. The herbage accumulation rate was higher for the Paiaguás and Xaraés cultivars. The Paiaguás grass stands out for its high herbage accumulation rate during the stockpiling period and for its higher number of vegetative tillers and lower number of reproductive tillers than that of the other cultivars.

Field experiments were conducted during winter seasons of 2013 and 2014 on the alkaline and silty loam soils of NWRP, Bhairahawa to study the interaction of the most promising wheat genotypes with different nitrogen levels under different agro-ecological zones and recommend the appropriate dose of nitrogen for newly released varieties. The experiment was laid out in split plot design: four nitrogen levels (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg/ha) as a whole plot and six wheat genotypes (BL 3623, BL 3629, BL 3872, NL 1008, NL 1055 and Vijay) as a sub-plot which were replicated three times. There was significant effect of varieties and nitrogen levels on plant height, number of spikes, thousand grain weight and grain yield in both the years. In first year, the highest grain yield of 3.35 t/ha was obtained from the application of nitrogen @ 150 kg/ha with the genotype BL 3872 which is followed by the genotypes BL 3623 (3.15 ton/ha) and NL 1055 (3.05 ton/ha). Similarly in second year, the genotype NL 1055 gave the highest grain yield of 4.01 ton/ha followed by genotypes BL 3629 (3.83 ton/ha) and BL 3623 (3.81 ton/ha) from the application of nitrogen @ 150 kg/ha. Based on two years results, it can be concluded that N was a limiting factor in the productivity of wheat. Nitrogen @ 150 kg per ha produced higher yield and yield attributing characters. Similarly, the wheat genotypes NL 1055, BL 3629, BL 3623 and BL 3872 were superior among the genotypes.

In spite of the low grain yield they produce, the hulled wheat have become even more important in recent years because of their resistance to negative environmental conditions and healthy nutritional content. The research was carry out in order to comparison the yield and yield characteristics of durum (Kiziltan-91 and C-1252), hulled (Einkorn and Emmer) and bread wheat (Tir) varieties in Isparta ecological conditions in 2013-14 and 2014-15 vegetation periods. In both years, the highest grain yield was obtained in Kiziltan-91 variety (3992 and 3758 kg ha-1 respectively). The grain yield of hulled wheats in the first year (Einkorn 1269 kg ha-1, Emmer 2125 kg ha-1) was around Turkey averages. However, grain yield decreased of commercial wheat varieties due to the negative effect of high amount of rainfall in June in the second year, but considerably increased in (Einkorn 2150 kg ha-1, Emmer 2533 kg ha-1). N uptake was found to be lower in the than durum wheats. In terms of grain protein content, the highest values were obtained in Emmer variety (16.4%-15.3%).

Glufosinate applied postemergence alone and in mixture with pendimethalin, thiobencarb, quinclorac, propanil, bensulfuron, bentazon, acifluorfen, or triclopyr was evaluated on bialaphosresistant (BAR) rice and red rice in field studies. Glufosinate at 2.2 kg ai/ha alone was less phytotoxic (6%) to BAR-transformed rice than when it was applied in combination with 0.4 kg ai/ha triclopyr (59%) or 0.6 kg ai/ha acifluorfen (22%). Rice yield with glufosinate alone was similar to the weed-free check the first year, but 13% less than the weed-free check the second year. For the glufosinate plus triclopyr mixture, rice yield was reduced by 39 and 76% compared with glufosinate alone in 1994 and 1995, respectively. Red rice control was 92% with either 3.4 kg ai/ha propanil or 0.6 kg/ha acifluorfen mixed with 0.6 kg/ha glufosinate, which was greater than for glufosinate alone and the other combinations. Propanil or acifluorfen mixed with glufosinate reduced red rice plant height, panicle maturity, and 100-seed weight 16, 31, and 24%, respectively, compared to glufosinate alone and 30, 48, and 43%, respectively, compared to the nontreated weedy check.

A three factor experiment with winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was carried out during two years on a coarse sandy soil in Denmark. The factors comprised four irrigation strategies including no irrigation, three nitrogen levels providing 67, 83 or 100% of the recommended nitrogen rate, and two strategies for control of leaf diseases (with and without fungicides). Different varieties were used in the two years, Pepital in the first year and Hussar in the second year. Mildew dominated the trial in the first year, but was almost absent in the second year. Septoria occurred in both years, but most severely in the second year. Irrigation increased grain yield, but there were no significant differences between the three strategies, where irrigation was applied. The effect of irrigation on yield was almost solely via an effect of increased transpiration, whereas water use efficiency and harvest index was unaffected. There was a significant interaction for grain yield between irrigation and nitrogen strategies with higher irrigation effects at higher nitrogen rates. This interaction was absent at high disease levels. Increasing nitrogen rate increased grain yield in the second year, but not in the first year. This was attributed to an increasing mildew incidence with increasing nitrogen rate. Irrigation also increased mildew incidence. This caused significant interactions for grain yield between fungicide application and nitrogen rate and between fungicide application and irrigation strategy. Septoria was also significantly affected by both nitrogen and irrigation strategies, but to a lesser degree and not in a consistent manner. The main effect of disease on grain yield was through a reduction in harvest index and a reduction in grain weight. Increasing nitrogen rates slightly reduced harvest index both on a dry matter and on a nitrogen basis. The interaction effects were smaller than the effects of the main factors, and the effect of changes in irrigation or nitrogen strategy on disease incidence could not substitute for the effective disease control obtained by fungicides. The results do, however, indicate possibilities of improving the efficiency of current decision support systems for both fungicide control by better timing of application and irrigation scheduling by reducing water application.

This study was conducted to determine the better hygienic behaviour determination method that is used in controlling against bee diseases and pests. Total forty honeybee colonies (Apis mellifera anatoliaca) were used and they were randomly divided into two groups (each group consists of twenty colonies) in first year. Liquid nitrogen method was used in the first group' colonies and pin-killing (needling process) method was used in the second group’ colonies to determine the effectiveness of methods for hygienic behaviour. Average clearance rate was found as 66.25% and 78.10% in the first (Liquid nitrogen application) and the second (pin-killing) groups respectively. In the second year, forty colonies were divided into five equal groups and each group consisted eight colonies. The first group consisted of 9 frames bees in standard langstroot hive (10 frame capacity), the second group consisted of 5 frames bees in standard langstroot hive (10 frame capacity), the third group consisted of 5 frames bees in ruşet hive (5 frame capacity), the forth group’s consisted of 3 frames bees in ruşet hive (5 frame capacity) and the fifty group consisted of queen mating hive. The pin-killing (needling process) method, tested in first year, was used for all groups to determine the effectiveness of colony population and the size of hive. Average clearance rates of the first, second, third, forth and fifth groups were 70.54%, 58.38%, 70.63%, 54.96% and 58.21% respectively. The colonies that belonged to the pin-killing (needling) group showed a higher cleaning behaviour rate than the other colonies. The density of bees in hive had an important effect on the clearance rate of colonies. The colonies of group 1 and group 3, which had the more density of bees in per unit area, had the higher clearance rate than the other groups.
