Fruit core rot of the peach cultivar 'Fayette' caused by Alternaria alternata in Greece

This is the first report of the occurrence of core rot on peaches [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch] caused by the fungus Alternaria alternata in Greece. This disease caused significant preharvest (at commercial ripening stage) and postharvest damage (at a percentage of ~5% of the total production) in the cultivar ‘Fayette’. Rotting of the core began while fruit were still on the tree, with a soft, wet, brown rot progressing in the flesh around the stone. A. alternata was isolated on acidified potato dextrose agar from the edges of the rotted tissues. Symptoms were reproduced under laboratory conditions by injection of spore suspensions in the flesh of mature and immature fruit of ‘Fayette’. In contrast, immature fruit did not show core rot symptoms when naturally infected. Furthermore, none of the other peach cultivars tested (‘Spring Lady’, ‘Spring Crest’, ‘June Gold’, ‘Red Haven’, ‘Sun Crest’, ‘Sun Cloud’) showed the symptoms of core rot of fruit at the commercial ripening stage. The rates of infection were significantly reduced at 10°C and completely inhibited at 2–4°C. The effectiveness of the fungicides PIΛAZIN 60WP, Thiophanate methyl 70WP, Folicur 25WG, Rovral 50WP, Dithane M-45 80WP and Switch 25/37.5 WP, at rates recommended by the manufacturers, were evaluated against A. alternata on agar and artificially inoculated fruit. The fungicides Folicur 25WG, Rovral 50WP and Switch 25/37.5 WP significantly reduced the development of A. alternata. Moderate effectiveness was shown by Dithane M-45 80WP. In contrast, the fungicides PIΛAZIN 60WP and Thiophanate methyl 70WP were not effective against this pathogen.

Peach fruit are most susceptible to infection by Monilinia fructicola during the preharvest ripening stage. Although various sources of inoculum for preharvest infection have been characterized, the role of latent infection of immature fruit in the carryover of M. fructicola from the spring (blossom blight phase) to the preharvest period (fruit rot phase) is unknown for the southeastern United States. From 1997 to 1999, immature peach fruit were collected at 14-day intervals from orchards in middle and northern Georgia. Fruit were surface disinfested and treated with paraquat (1997) or frozen overnight (1998 and 1999) to induce tissue senescence and activate latent infections. Across sites and years, the incidence of latent infection remained low until the final sampling date 7 to 12 days before harvest. The incidence of latent infection on the final sampling date ranged from 0 to 22.0% and correlated significantly with both the incidence of blossom blight earlier in the season (r = 0.9077, P = 0.0332) and the incidence of fruit rot at harvest (r = 0.9966, P = 0.0034). There also was a significant association between the incidence of latent infection at the onset of pit hardening (between 7 and 10 weeks before harvest) and subsequent fruit rot incidence (r = 0.9763, P = 0.0237). Weather variables (cumulative rainfall or rainfall frequency) alone did not correlate with fruit rot incidence (P > 0.05), whereas combined latent infection-rainfall variables did. The results suggest that latent infections can serve as a source of inoculum for subsequent fruit rot in peach orchards in Georgia. Despite its significant association with fruit rot incidence, the potential for using latent infection incidence as a biological indicator of disease risk at harvest may be limited; the assessment of latent infection during the fruit ripening stage (similar to the timing of the final sampling date in this study) would not provide sufficient lead time for preharvest disease management decisions, whereas an earlier assessment (e.g., at the onset of pit hardening) would require large sample sizes due to the low incidence of latent infection present during that period.

The effectiveness of the calcium products Chelan, Power-Ca, and calcium chloride to reduce the development of Monilinia laxa on ‘Andross’ peach (Prunus persica) was investigated. The mycelium growth of M. laxa on potato dextrose agar modified with Chelan, Power-Ca, or calcium chloride compound at concentrations 1, 2, and 4 g·L−1 was significantly reduced in comparison with the water. Chelan, Power-Ca, and calcium chloride applied as foliar sprays did not significantly affect the development of the pathogen on inoculated immature and mature peaches. However, dipping peaches in solutions containing one of the calcium products tested reduced significantly the percentage of M. laxa infection on inoculated fruit.

This article examines how female conditioning and sexual repression affect the woman’s sense of self, womanhood, identity and her place in society. It argues that the woman’s body is at the core of the many sites of gender struggles/ politics. Accordingly, the woman’s body must be decolonised for her to attain true emancipation. On the one hand, this study identifies the grave consequences of sexual repression, how it robs women of their freedom to choose whom to love or marry, the freedom to seek legal redress against sexual abuse and terror, and how it hinders their quest for self-determination. On the other hand, it underscores the need to give women sexual freedom that must be respected and enforced by law for the overall good of society.

In this study we investigate how consumers in The Netherlands can be persuaded to adopt sustainable practices when purchasing, using and disposing of clothes. This study investigates the attitude-behavior gap for the sustainable choices for purchase, use and disposing of clothes. For each consumption phase we ran a two-step multiple regression. The findings showed that the importance of the factors vary in the three consumption phases. For purchasing and disposal decisions, the core motivator social motivation predicts sustainable practices best, while it has no role in the usage phase. The factor ability appeared to have a significant role in the disposal phase, but not in the other phases. Finally, the trigger appears to lower the consumers’ ability in the purchasing phase, while it enhances the core motivator social evaluation in the disposal phase.

AbstractIn order to select the heterogeneous multicore fiber (MCF) configuration with ultra-low crosstalk and low peak bending radius, comparative crosstalk analysis have been done for the three possible core configurations, namely, Configuration 1 - different refractive index (R.I.) and different radius, Configuration 2 - different R.I., and Configuration 3 - different radius. Using the coupled mode equation and the simplified expressions of mode coupling coefficient (MCC) for different configurations of heterogeneous cores, the crosstalk performance of all the heterogeneous MCF configurations along with the homogeneous MCF have been investigated analytically with respect to core pitch (D) and fiber bending radius (${R}_{b}$). Further, these expressions of MCC have been extended to obtain the simplified expressions of MCC for the estimation of crosstalk levels in respective trench-assisted (TA) heterogeneous MCF configurations. It is observed from the analysis that in Configuration 1, crosstalk level is lowest and the rate of decrease in the crosstalk with respect to the core pitch is highest compared to the other configurations of heterogeneous MCF. The values of crosstalk obtained analytically have been validated by comparing it with the values obtained from finite element method (FEM) based numerical simulation results. Further, we have investigated the impact of a fixed percent change (5%) in the core parameters (radius and/or R.I.) of one of the core of a homogeneous MCF, to realize the different heterogeneous MCF configurations, on the variations in crosstalk levels, difference in the mode effective refractive index of the core 1 and core 2 ($\Delta {n}_{eff}={n}_{eff1}-{n}_{eff2}$), and the peak bending radius (${R}_{pk}$). For the same percent variations (5%) in the core parameters (radius and/or R.I.) of different configurations of cores (Config. 1-Config. 3), Config. 1 MCF has highest variation in $\Delta {n}_{eff}$ value compared to other configurations of MCF. Further, this highest variation in $\Delta {n}_{eff}$ value of Config. 1 MCF results in smallest peak bending radius. The smaller value of peak bending radius allows MCF to bend into smaller radius. Therefore, Configuration 1 is the potential choice for the design of MCF with smaller peak bending radius and ultra-low crosstalk level compared to the other configurations of SI-heterogeneous MCF.

Abstract The article examines how the aspects of the social world are enacted in a theater play. The data come from a videotaped performance of a professional theater, portraying a story about a workplace organization going through a personnel training program. The aim of the study is to show how the core theme of the play – the teaming up of the personnel – is constructed in the live performance through a range of interactional means. By focusing on four core episodes of the play, the study on the one hand points out to the multiple changes taking place both within and between the different episodes of the play. On the other hand, the episodes of collective action involving the semiotic resources of singing and dancing are shown to represent the ideals of teamwork in distinct ways. The study contributes to the understanding of socially and politically oriented theater as a distinct, pre-rehearsed social setting and the means and practices that it deploys when enacting the aspects of the contemporary societal issues.
