The classification of quantitative ecological survey data has in the past encountered two serious difficulties: (i) no completely satisfactory information statistic model has been devised for this purpose, and the theoretically most attractive - the "diversity" model - appears usually to produce ecologically meaningless fusions; (ii) no satisfactory partition of information between qualitative and quantitative components has been known. The requirement is for an information statistic model which can be confidently used for either qualitative or quantitative data, and which can be partitioned into its qualitative and quantitative components. A new statistic is defined which meets these requirements, and its application to a small-scale test example is illustrated.

Female underrepresentation in postcompulsory physics is an ongoing issue for science education research, policy, and practice. In this article, we apply Bourdieusian and Butlerian conceptual lenses to qualitative and quantitative data collected as part of a wider longitudinal study of students’ science and career aspirations age 10–16. Drawing on survey data from more than 13,000 year 11 (age 15/16) students and interviews with 70 students (who had been tracked from age 10 to 16), we focus in particular on seven girls who aspired to continue with physics post-16, discussing how the cultural arbitrary of physics requires these girls to be highly “exceptional,” undertaking considerable identity work and deployment of capital in order to “possibilize” a physics identity—an endeavor in which some girls are better positioned to be successful than others.

ABSTRACTDuring the past year we have conducted a modified MCC-1 leach test on a 145 kg block of a cast cement waste form. The leach vessel was a 200 liter Teflon®-lined drum and contained 97.5 liters of deionized water. The results of this large-scale leach test were compared with the results of standard MCC-1 tests (40 ml) on smaller samples of the same waste form. The ratio of leachate volumes between the large and small scale tests was 2500 and the ratio of sample masses was 150,000. The cast cement samples for both tests contained plutonium-doped incinerator ash.The leachates from these tests were analyzed for both plutonium and the matrix elements. Evaluation of plutonium plateout in the large-scale test indicated that the majority of the plutonium leached from the samples deposits onto vessel walls and little (<3 × 10−12M) remains in solution. Comparison of elemental concentrations in the leachates indicates some differences up to 5X in the concentration in the large- and small-scale tests. The differences are attributed to differences in the solubilities of Ca, Si, and Fe at pH ˜11.5 and at pH ˜12.5. The higher pH observed for the large-scale test is a result of the larger quantities of sodium in the large block of cement.

This article examines the perceptions of young migrants (and non-migrants), their parents, and teachers to discuss whether the school is a device of inclusion or a device of exclusion that produces inequalities. It presents qualitative and quantitative data collected in the urban areas of Lisbon and Porto. First, we analyze data from 14 focus groups, involving 94 participants, and 12 interviews. Second, we consider survey data from a sample of 1,010 youngsters of Portuguese, Angolan, and Brazilian origin. Findings suggest the school plays an ambivalent role; however, participants emphasize mostly its discriminatory and segregating role.

This article is presented after ten years of research on the earthen architecture of southeastern Morocco, more specifically that of the natural axis connecting the cities of Midelt and Er-Rachidia, located North and South of the Moroccan northern High Atlas. The typology studied is called ksar (ksour, pl.). Throughout various research projects, we have been able to explore this territory, documenting in field sheets the characteristics of a total of 30 ksour in the Outat valley, 20 in the mountain range and 53 in the Mdagra oasis. The objective of the present work is to analyze, through qualitative and quantitative data, the main characteristics of this vernacular architecture as a perfect example of an environmentally respectful habitat, obtaining concrete data on its traditional character and its sustainability. The methodology followed is based on case studies and, as a result, we have obtained a typological classification of the ksour of this region and their relationship with the territory, as well as the social, functional, defensive, productive, and building characteristics that define them. Knowing and puttin in value this vernacular heritage is the first step towards protecting it and to show our commitment to future generations.

Small-scale fishers are considered as one of the most vulnerable communities in Bangladesh but very few studies focused on the livelihood sustainability and vulnerabilities of this professional group. A fieldwork in lower Padma and upper Meghna hilsa sanctuaries identifies different livelihood characters and associated vulnerabilities of the fishers. A conceptual framework known as Sustainable Livelihood Approaches (SLA) has been introduced to analyses the qualitative and quantitative data. The insights of the livelihood strategies provide on small-scale fishers and fisheries management have been explained and explored. Fishers are found solely dependent on fishing, economically insolvent and neglected. In addition, some socio-economic abstractions such as low income, credit insolvency, lack of substitute earning flexibility make them more vulnerable. A number of effective suggestions are elicited from fishers’ perceptions, the implementation of which is crucial to ensure livelihood sustainability of the small-scale fishers.

This is a small-scale study that aims to investigate Zakho city English teachers' awareness of the teaching methods that should be used in teaching Sunrise Series. The current study collected both qualitative and quantitative data utilising different data collection methods. The participants of the study were 38 teachers from Zakho city teaching in different levels (primary, secondary, and high school). These 38 teachers were chosen to respond to a questionnaire especially designed to achieve the objectives of the study. Nine of these participants were chosen to be interviewed. Each three were chosen to represent a level of education mentioned above. This study also employed different data analysis methods so as to obtain valid results. Results revealed that the majority of the teachers at Zakho city are aware of the English teaching methods but do not know which ones should be used in teaching the Sunrise curriculum. It was also revealed that they are using classical methods in teaching a curriculum which is especially designed to be taught according to the CLT approach. Finally, this study also found that the majority of the teachers need improvement in their teaching practices, particularly in teaching the Sunrise Series.

Javanese people believe that there are several months that are not well chosen as the wedding month, because there are calamities or disasters that will occur in the household, namely: Suro (Muharam), Mulud (Rabiul Awal), Poso (Ramadan), and Selo (Zulkaidah). This article further examines the attitude of urban communities who have received much internalization of understanding, cultural influences, and environmental conditions that are generally industrialists against the adat ban. There are three Religious Affairs Offices (KUA) in the Sidoarjo area that are used as research objects, namely (Waru, Sedati, and Buduran). ) The reason for choosing these three locations is the typography of the area that is mostly inhabited by traditionalist Muslim communities. But in the last decade, this region has changed, from an agricultural area that relies on agriculture and fish farming, to become an industrial area with the establishment of various types of factories and other types of businesses. Based on qualitative and quantitative data, there has been a trend of behavior change in the Sidoarjo community which in the period 1984-1985 the percentage of marriages on the month was avoided a little, it was seen that there was an additional percentage according to the data taken in the last 10 years. The people of Sidoarjo are now starting to move to not be fixated on the rules of the month election. In the past, the number of couples married at four months was avoided only slightly. And now, there is a change in tendency even though the percentage is not too significant.

Over the past two decades, the Brazilian state addressed the racial issue by developing a number of anti-racist laws, policies, and institutions. The rise of the anti-racism agenda began with Fernando Henrique Cardoso’s government, growing even greater under Lula da Silva and Dilma Rousseff. Nonetheless, further developments on this agenda have been halted since Michel Temer came to power in 2016, and the agenda as a whole is now undergoing a dismantling mode. This essay discusses how the dismantling of the anti-racism agenda has reverberated into the current institutional, political, and social crisis in Brazil. In consideration of this problem, I map out color-related characteristics of the Brazilian crisis through qualitative and quantitative data ranging from Lula to Bolsonaro years. I use past and present data to compare two processes: the previous shaping and the current dismantling of anti-racist public policies.
