Rainforests in the South Pacific hold a considerable amount of plant diversity, with rates of species endemism >80% in some countries. This diversity is rapidly disappearing under pressure from logging, clearing for agriculture or mining, introduced pests and diseases and other anthropogenic sources. Ex situ conservation techniques offer a means to limit the loss of plant diversity. Seed banking is considered the most efficient and cost effective of these techniques but is applicable only to seed capable of tolerating desiccation and cold storage. Data on the degree of tolerance of these conditions was lacking for more than half of the 1503 South Pacific rainforest genera examined for this review. Of the 710 genera for which data were available, the storage behaviour of 324 was based on an assessment of only one or two species, although 76% of those genera contained at least 10 species. Many of the unstudied or poorly studied genera are shared across several South Pacific nations, providing an excellent opportunity for collaboration on future ex situ research and conservation. Of the 386 genera for which three or more species have been studied, 343 have a very high proportion of species (>95% of those tested) that are suitable for seed banking. Seed banking could therefore provide a suitable means for preserving a large proportion of the rainforest flora before it becomes extinct in the wild. Alternatives for preserving species that are not suitable for seed banking are also discussed.

Amborella trichopoda Baill., the most ancestral angiosperm, has been successfully cultivated in the Botanic Gardens of the University of Bonn in Germany (BG Bonn) for more than a decade. The distribution of this plant – limited to the South Pacific island of New Caledonia – and its cultivation has so far only been achieved in a few botanic gardens. This paper provides details about the cultivation and propagation of Amborella, and information on its cultivation in botanic gardens around the world. The authors propose that the collections of this plant in botanic gardens could be used to establish ex situ conservation collections.

Botanic gardens and arboreta offer the opportunity to conserve and manage a wide range of plant diversity ex situ, and in situ in the broader landscape. The rationale that botanic gardens have a major role to play in preventing plant species extinctions is based on the assumptions that (1) there is no technical reason why any plant species should become extinct, and (2) that, as a professional community, botanic gardens possess a unique set of skills that encompass finding, identifying, collecting, conserving and growing plant diversity across the entire taxonomic spectrum. Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) is the pivotal centre of a global network of c. 2,600 botanic gardens and arboreta, which includes living collections representing at least one-third of known plant diversity; world class seed banks, glasshouses and tissue culture infrastructures; and technical knowledge networks covering all aspects of plant conservation. Following the example of the crop conservation community, BGCI is promoting the concept of a cost-effective, rational,botanic garden-centred Global System for the conservation and management of plant diversity.This system will aim to collect, conserve, characterise and cultivate samples from all of the world’s rare and threatened plants as an insurance policy against their extinction in the wild and as a source of plant material for human innovation, adaptation and resilience.

Ex-situ conservation is an important key in the management of rare, endangered and threatened (RET) plant species and its effectiveness depends on several factors. Maintenance of viable germplasm and its subsequent propagation plays an important role in long term conservation of many RET species. Nepenthes khasiana is a rare and gravely threatened species in the wild due to over-collection and other threats. The species needs urgent in-situ and ex-situ conservation. Development of easy to propagate techniques would pave faster multiplication for its use of educational, medicinal and horticultural purpose. In the present paper, successful propagation technique of Nepenthes khasiana through seeds is demonstrated along with detailed information on precautions to be taken during the adoption of the techniques.

Botanical expeditions in Laos through a collaboration between Thailand (Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden) and Laos (Pha Tad Ke Botanic Garden) to document plant diversity and collect plants for ex situ conservation, led to the discovery of two species of Gesneriaceae previously believed to be endemic to Thailand: Damrongia trisepala (Barnett) D.J.Middleton & A.Weber and Didymocarpus formosus Nangngam & D.J.Middleton. Information on these species is provided.

Abstract. Benthic microbial oxygen consumption rates were investigated during an IODP site survey to the South Pacific Gyre. Primary production, particle fluxes and sedimentation rates are extraordinarily low in this most oligotrophic oceanic region on earth. We studied benthic microbial respiration rates from vertical oxygen profiles in sediments obtained on different spatial scales ex situ (in piston cores and multi cores), and in situ (using a benthic lander with a microelectrode profiler). Along a transect in the area 24 to 46° S and 165 to 117° W, cores at 10 of 11 sites were oxygenated for their entire lengths (as much as 8 m below seafloor), at concentrations >150 μmol L−1 O2. This represents the deepest oxygen penetration ever measured in marine sediments. Microprofiles from the top sediment layer revealed a diffusive oxygen flux to the sediment in the order of 0.2 mmol m−2 d−1. This is in the lower range of previously reported fluxes for oligotrophic sediments but corresponds well to the low surface water primary production. Because of the inert nature of the deeper sediment, oxygen that is not consumed in the surface layer diffuses downward to much greater depth. In deeper zones, a small O2 flux of ~0.1 μmol m−2 d−1 was therefore still present. This flux was constant with depth, indicating extremely low respiration rates. Modeling of the measured oxygen profiles suggests that the sediment is probably oxygenated down to the basalt, indicating an oxygen flux from the sediment into the basaltic basement.

<p class="IsiAbstrakIndo"><span lang="EN-GB">Mount Seblat, as part a of Kerinci Seblat National Park (KSNP), is a pristine and natural mountain, particularly from disturbances and destructions by human activities. Nevertheless, the richness of biological resources especially plant diversity.in this area has not been more explored. The purpose of this study was to conduct an inventory of plant diversity and to determine the plant species composition. The inventory activities were conducted by plants collection along the ascent route. The results were then be maintained through ex situ conservation method in Cibodas Botanical Garden (CBG). The study was conducted by exploratory method, from Seblat Ulu Village (641 m asl) up to altitude of 1,037 m asl. There were 18 points of plant sample observation with an area of 5 x 5 square meters per point. Plant collection obtained 380 specimens. Five groups of most collected plants were Lauraceae (18 species), Rubiaceae (8 species), Anacardiaceae (6 species), Annonaceae (5 species), and Fagaceae (4 species). In order to enrich the plants collection as well as conduct the ex situ conservation effort, plants from Orchidaceae were also collected which resulted in 33 species. These results were an important initial inventory of plant diversity of Mount Seblat, considering that there was no record as well as very limited current information. When the environment disturbance tends to increase, this information may act as a reference and an initial database to develop plants conservation effort and strategy in the future.</span></p>

Honey bear population in the wild is currently declined due to land clearing and poaching. The effort that is be made to prevent the extinction of honey bears is through ex situ conservation, as practiced by Taman Agro Satwa dan Wisata Bumi Kedaton in Bandar Lampung. The behavior and nutrient content of drop in feed are affect of succesfully honey bear ex-situ conservation in TASWBK. The aim of this research are to analyze  the daily behaviour , the kind of drop in feed, valatability of feed and find out the value of nutrient content in drop in feed in the captive. This research has done on mei, 2015. The research metode of daily behaviour used focas, the kind of drop in feed used descriptive analyze. Nutrient content of drop in feed use proximat analyzed and methode of approach the composition of material food indonesia. And supported by interview and literatur study. The locomotion behaviour of male and female honey bear has the highest proportion, there are 55,35% and 51,06%. The lowest percentage of male and female honey bear behavior there are feeding behavior (16,79% and 12,13%). The kind of drop in feed thats given by TASWBK there are papaya, tubers and muli banana. The biggest number of consumption drop in feed that is papaya (6.120 gr/day) for male honey bear and (3.930 gr/day) for female honey bear. The highest of feed nutrient contents per day, there are water and content ash from papaya amounted to 5.306,04 grams, 36,72 grams and 30,6 grams, fiber and fat from muli banana of 12,85 grams and 7,35 grams. Keywords    :   honey bear, daily behavior, nutrient content of drop in feed in Taman Agro Satwa dan Wisata Bumi Kedaton

The Belem Curassow (Crax fasciolata pinima) is one of the most endangered birds in South America, without sightings of birds in the wild for 40 years. This subspecies is nationally and internationally classified as critically endangered and close to extinction, suffering from poaching and deforestation in its range. Here we present new records of free-living individuals made on three indigenous lands in Pará and Maranhão states: in part of Terra Indígena Mãe Maria, Bom Jesus do Tocantins, Pará; in locations within the Reserva Biológica do Gurupi/Terra Indígena Alto Turiaçu, Centro Novo do Maranhão, Maranhão; and around the Terra Indígena Rio Pindaré, Alto Alegre do Pindaré, Maranhão. We also provide recommendations to protect this bird via a dedicated conservation program which includes finding new individuals in non-sampled areas (north of BR-222), estimating population size, enhancing taxonomic and natural history knowledge, capturing wild animals in order to start urgent ex situ conservation programs, and developing environmental awareness programs with the local and indigenous populations.
