During the winter of 1954, 21 pregnant Peppin strain Merino ewes were subjected daily, 7 hours a day, 7 days a week, to an air temperature of 105°F dry-bulb, 92°F wet-bulb, in a psychrometric room. Nine of the ewes were heated from the date mating started and the other 12 from the 38th day of pregnancy. Birth weights of the lambs of the two groups showed no significant difference from those of 10 unheated control ewes pregnant during the same period. However, when subjected the following year, for the same period daily throughout the whole of pregnancy, to a higher temperature, namely, 112°F dry-bulb, 98°F wet-bulb, 10 experimental ewes produced lambs having a mean birth weight 1 lb 13 oz less than that of the lambs of eight unheated control ewes. The difference is highly significant statistically. It is concluded that pregnancy in Merinos is adversely affected by extremely high atmospheric temperature; and that this could well explain the low birth weight of lambs born following a summer gestation in tropical Queensland and in certain other parts of Australia when an unusually hot summer occurs.

Abstract BackgroundIt has been noticed for years that ultrafiltration is important for survival in peritoneal dialysis. On the other hand, ultrafiltration measurement is much more complicated than it thought to be. Both overfill and flush before fill used to be source of measurement error. However, controversy finding around ultrafiltration in peritoneal dialysis still exists.MethodsFour different brands of dialysate were purchased from the market. The freshest dialysate available in the market were intentionally picked. The dialysate were all 2L, 2.5% dextrose and traditional lactate buffered PD solution. They were stored in four different conditions with controlled temperature and humidity. The bags were weight at baseline, 6 months and 12 months of storage. Specific gravity was measured in mixed 24 hour drainage dialysate from 261 CAPD patients in a cross sectional manner. ResultsThere was significant difference in dialysate bag weight at baseline between brands. The weight declined significantly after 12 months storage. The weight loss was more significant in higher temperature and lower humidity. The dialysate in non-PVC package lose less weight than PVC package. The specific gravity of dialysate drainage was significantly higher than pure water and related to dialysate protein concentration.ConclusionStorage condition and duration, as well as the type of the dialysate package gave extra variance in overfill volume. The fact that specific gravity of dialysate drainage is higher than 1g/ml also contributes to systemic measurement error of ultrafiltration in manual exchanges.Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT03864120 (March 8, 2019) (Understand the Difference Between Clinical Measured Ultrafiltration and Real Ultrafiltration)

Abstract Purpose: To evaluate the short-term safety and long-term efficacy of thoracoscopic surgery for esophageal atresia(EA) in low birth weight infants. Methods: From January 2011 to December 2019,a retrospective analysis on clinical data of 48 cases of low birth weight infants of EA. The clinical data were divided according to surgical methods: Thoracoscopy group A and thoracotomy group B. Variables of intra-operation, postoperative complications and mid-term postoperative complications were compared between the two groups. Results: 3 were discharged due to treatment abandoning. there were 17 cases in thoracoscopy group A and 28 cases in thoracotomy group B. The operation time of group A(172.41±20.00min)was longer than B(149.82±13.91min),the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05).the intraoperative blood loss of group A(7.41±2.83ml) was less than B(18.61±3.60ml),the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05).postoperative mechanical ventilation time, thoracic drainage time, hospital stay were not significantly different between the two groups. the incidence of anastomotic stenosis in group B(58.82%) was higher than in A(28.57%),the difference was statistically significant (P=0.045).There was no significant difference in the incidence of esophageal anastomotic fistula and recurrent tracheoesophageal fistula. After 3 years of follow-up, the incidence of thoracic deformity in group B(25%) was higher than in A(0%).The difference was significant(P=0.034).However, no significant difference was observed among the gastroesophageal reflux, symptomatic stenosis, tracheomalacia. Conclusion: Compared with thoracotomy, thoracoscopy in low weight infants with EA has the advantages of smaller incision, fewer intraoperative bleeding, and less incidence of thoracic deformities. Thoracoscopy might be a feasible surgical option for low weight infants when performed by a surgeon who has rich experience. The major mid-term complications after surgery are esophageal stenosis, gastroesophageal reflux and tracheomalacia.

The purpose of this study is to compare the load calculation results by a model using the air changes per hour (ACH) method and a model using an airflow network (AFN) and to ascertain what causes the difference between the two models. In the basic case study, the difference in the heat transfer distribution of the model in the interior space was investigated. The most significant difference between the two models is the heat transfer that results from infiltration. Parameter analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between the difference and the environmental variables. The result shows that the greater the difference is between the air temperature inside the balcony and the outdoor air temperature, and the greater the air flows from the balcony to the residential area, and the greater the heating and cooling load difference occurs. The analysis using the actual weather files of five domestic cities in South Korea rather than a virtual case shows that the differences are not so obvious when the wind blows at a constant speed throughout the year, but are dominant when the wind does not blow during the night and is stronger alongside the occurrence of sunlight during the day.

Data in life table form are presented from a 12-year prospective study of 859 children on the age of attaining bladder control for waking and sleeping hours by three indices: (1) age of initial dryness, (2) age of final dryness, and (3) the prevalence of dryness. By use of these indices the large contribution of relapsers to enuresis is seen. The prevalence of bedwetting in the study population was greater than that reported in other studies; the validity of this finding is defended. A larger proportion of female than male children attained both day and night dryness during the first 2 years of life. The percentage of Negro boys who first attained dryness was less than that of the other three race-sex groups after 2 years of age and was significantly less than that of Negro girls until 9 years of age. One quarter of the 817 children who attained initial nighttime dryness by age 12 relapsed; these relapsing episodes had a median duration of 2.5 years. One tenth of 855 children who attained initial daytime dryness had relapses, and the median length of these was 1.2 years. Relapsing occurred much more frequently in Negro than Caucasian children; it also was seen more often in Caucasian males than in Caucasian females. Low birth weight children had a higher percentage of children wet for both waking and sleeping hours than did full birth weight children.

The present study was planned to characterize the microclimate experienced by Aedes larvae in different breeding habitats by determining the temperature variations in water kept in containers during different months under natural conditions. The study was conducted in three municipal zones of Delhi. In each site, four types of container material (plastic, cement, iron and ceramic) were chosen for recording the water temperature in the containers. Daily air and water temperatures (mean, maximum and minimum values) recorded by HOBO and Tidbit data loggers, respectively, were compared using analysis of variance and Tukey’s honest significant difference (HSD) tests. Mean monthly temperature of water varied from 16.9 to 33.0 °C in tin containers, 17.3 to 35.6°C in plastic containers, 14.3 to 28.5°C in ceramic pots, 23.3 to 30.4°C in cemented underground tanks (UGT) and 15.8 to 35.1°C in cemented overhead tanks (OHTs). Corresponding values for the air temperature ranged from 17.7 to 36.1°C. The difference between temperature of water in the containers and air temperature was highest for ceramic pots. Daily mean, maximum and minimum temperatures recorded by different data loggers differed significantly (P<0.05). When Tukey HSD test was applied for data analysis, the daily mean air temperature differed significantly from the water temperature in tin and ceramic pots as well as cemented OHTs. The temperature of water in the different breeding habitats investigated was lower than the air temperature. Moreover, actual air temperature as recorded by HOBO was higher than the temperature recorded by local weather stations. Considering the ongoing climate change, cemented UGT and earthen pots may be more productive breeding habitats for the Aedes mosquito in the near future, while plastic and cemented OHTs might no longer be suitable for Aedes breeding.

Introduction: Low birth weight (LBW) infants who have been hospitalized are exposed to various conditions that provoke discomfort, which could trigger a stress response and growth disorders. This study aimed to identify the effects of auditory stimuli from Murottal Quran when it comes to the comfort and weight of LBW infants. Methods: This study used a clinical randomized controlled trial design involving 52 low birth weight infants. The infants were randomly assigned to either the intervention group (n=26) or the control (n=26). The intervention of Murottal Quran was given using a speaker 4 times a day for 20 minutes every 3 hours. This intervention was conducted for three days. Results: The results of this study show that there is a significant difference in the comfort of  low birth weight infants after Murottal Qur’an on the first, second, and third days between the intervention and control groups (p=0.014; <0.001; <0.001). There was no significant difference in the weight between the intervention and control groups in the first, second, and third days (p=0.481; 0.481; 0.464).Conclusion: The auditory stimuli of Murottal Quran can help to improve the comfort level of low birth weight infants during hospitalization. It can therefore be used as a supportive therapy to facilitate low birth weight infant and premature infant development.

Background: Low birth weight is the major determinant of mortality, morbidity and disability in infancy and childhood and has a long-term impact on health outcome in adult life. The objectives of this study were to study the relationship between maternal anemia and birth weight of babies and to study anthropometric measures of babies born to anemic and non-anemic mothers and to correlate the timing of anemia with birth weight of babies. Methods: Term babies born in Institute of Maternal and Child Health, Government Medical College, Kozhikode from November 2014 to October 2016 fulfilling the criteria were divided into 2 groups, cases (term babies with birth weight <2500g) and controls (term babies with weight >2500g) and studied and their maternal hemoglobin values were compared. Results: Maternal anaemia in all three trimesters was found to be more in cases compared to controls. Mean 1st trimester hemoglobin of cases was 10.68 g/dl which was significantly lower when compared to controls. Mean 2nd trimester hemoglobin of cases was 10.36 g/dl compared to 11.47 g/dl in controls. Mean 3rd trimester hemoglobin of cases was 10.42 g/dl which was also significantly lower compared to 11.32 g/dl in controls. SGA babies were also found to be more in cases, 89%, compared to 18% in controls. The difference in head circumference between two groups was not statistically significant. Mean length of babies were higher in controls compared to cases. Mothers with anemia at any time during pregnancy was found to have 4.3 times higher risk of giving birth to low birth weight babies compared to non-anemic mothersConclusion: Anemia during pregnancy is a risk factor for low birth weight and SGA, independent of the trimester. Length of babies born to anaemic mothers is also low. But it does not have a significant effect on head circumference of babies.
