Epitaxial thin films of Bi2FeCrO6 (BFCO) have been synthesized by pulsed laser deposition on SrRuO3 on (100)- and (111)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates. Detailed x-ray diffraction and cross-section transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed a double perovskite crystal structure of the BFCO epitaxial films very similar to that of BiFeO3 along with a particularly noteworthy Fe3+/Cr3+ cation ordering along the [111] direction. The films contain no detectable magnetic iron oxide impurities and have the correct cationic average stoichiometry throughout their thickness. They however exhibit a slight modulation in the Fe and Cr compositions forming complementary stripe patterns, suggesting minor local excess or depletion of Fe and Cr. The epitaxial BFCO films exhibit good ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties, in addition to magnetic properties at room temperature, as well as an unexpected crystallographic orientation dependence of their room-temperature magnetic properties. Our results qualitatively confirm the predictions made using the ab initio calculations: the double perovskite structure of BFCO films exhibit a Fe3+/Cr3+ cation ordering and good multiferroic properties, along with the unpredicted existence of magnetic ordering at room temperature.

ABSTRACTEpitaxial thin films of SrLaVMoO6 with an ordered double perovskite structure have been grown on (001) and (111) SrTiO3 substrates by magnetron sputtering. The optimized (111) film exhibited a clear (111) diffraction peak, which is a superlattice reflection of double perovskite unite cell, indicating clear B-site ordering. Temperature dependences of resistivity ρ show metallic behavior and transition point at 140~150 K, of which behavior is reminiscent of the electrical properties of materials showing long-range magnetic or antiferromagnetic order. XPS results of the Mo 3d core level spectra are discussed in terms of the B-site ordering and oxygen nonstoichiometry.

Epitaxial thin films of PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 (PZT) were synthesized successfully on SrRuO3/SrTiO3/MgO/TiN/Si heterostructures by pulsed laser deposition. The films were single phase and had (001) orientation. The deposition parameters were varied to obtain the best epitaxial layer for each of the compounds. Transmission electron microscopy indicated good epitaxy for the entire heterostructure and sharp interfaces between the epilayers. Dielectric and P–E hysteresis loop measurements were carried out with evaporated Ag electrodes. The dielectric constant for the films was found to be between 400–450. The value of saturation polarization Ps was between 55–60 μC/cm2, and the coercive field Ec varied from 60–70 kV/cm. Integration of PZT films with silicon will be useful for future memory and micromechanical devices.

The annealing process is an important step common to epitaxial films prepared by chemical solution deposition methods. It is so because the final microstructure of the films can be severely affected by the precise features of the thermal processing. In this work we analyze the structural and magnetic properties of double perovskite La2CoMnO6 and La2NiMnO6 epitaxial thin films prepared by polymer-assisted deposition (PAD) and crystallized by rapid thermal annealing (RTA). It is found that samples prepared by RTA have similar values of saturation magnetization and Curie temperature to their counterparts prepared by using conventional thermal annealing (CTA) processes, thus indicating low influence of the heating rates on the B-B’ site cationic ordering of the A2BB’O6 double perovskite structure. However, a deeper analysis of the magnetic behavior suggested some differences in the actual microstructure of the films.
