Summary The effects of steaming were studied on Walnut wood from a hybrid (Juglans nigra 23 × J. regia) tree in terms of wood colour and phenolic composition. Wood samples were subjected to treatments at 75, 100 and 125°C for 4, 8, 16 and 24 hours. Colour changes were measured in the CIELCh colour system and phenolics were characterized and quantified by means of HPLC. Steaming mainly resulted in a darkening of wood tissues. Colour changes increased as temperature increased from 75 to 125°C. Lightness L* gradually decreased from 0 to 24 h at 75°C, whereas with higher temperatures, most of the darkening occurred within the first 4 hours of exposure. Contrast in colour, between sapwood and heartwood in particular, could be reduced by steaming at 125°C. The best steaming treatment, leading to a colour of steamed sapwood close to that of natural heartwood, was at 100°C/16 h. Hydrojuglone glucoside (HJG), ellagic and gallic acid derivatives (E1, E2 and G respectively) were gradually degraded by steaming, whereas a new flavonol (F) and oxidation products (OP) increased. Relationships between wood colour and phenolic content are discussed.

Significance. Black Walnut (Juglans nigra L.) is a species of trees of the Walnut family (Juglandaceae). This plant of the genus Walnut (Juglans L.) has not been sufficiently studied unlike other species e.g. Juglans regia L. This medicinal plant raw material is quite perspective, its preparations have antimicrobial, general tonic effect. We can use its leaves, unripe fruit, and the bark. However they are not widely used in medicine. In order to introduce the plants of the Walnut genus to the State Pharmacopoeia of the Russian Federation (RF State Pharmacopoeia), it is necessary to conduct of pharmacognostic studies, to develop product specification file to confirm the identification and quality of medicinal plant raw materials. The aim of this study is to develop a method of quantitative determination of flavonoids in the bark of the black walnut (Juglans nigra L.). Materials and methods. Material of the study was black walnut bark, stocked during the sap flow period (April) in 2018. The bark was skived up to 15 cm long and 23 cm wide. The bark was air-dried with the protection from direct sun light. The end of the drying was checked by the brittleness of the bark. Results. The methods of the quantitative determination of flavonoids in walnut bark has been developed. We used the differential spectrophotometry taking into consideration state standard sample of rutin at the analytical wavelength of 416 nm. The error of a single determination with a confidence level of 95% is 1.20%. Conclusion. We used the developed technique and analyzed a number of samples of black walnut bark. The content of total flavonoids in the plant raw material is 5.13 0.02% (as calculated on rutin). The flavonoid content should be at least 4.0%.

Виявлено, що видовий склад дендрофлори національного природного парку "Вижницький" нараховує 58 видів дерев та чагарників, які об'єднані у 38 родів, 22 родини та належать до двох відділів: Pinophyta та Magnoliophyta. Національний природний парк "Вижницький" знаходиться в південно-західній частині Чернівецької області в низькогір'ях Буковинського сектору Скибової зони Карпат. Адміністративно парк розташований у межах Вижницького району Чернівецької області та його площа становить 11238 га і містить землі Баганянської, Виженської, Черешенської сільських рад, Берегометської селищної ради і Вижницької міської ради. Причому інтродукованих є тільки 8 видів: Pinus strobus L., Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco, Robinia psevdoacacia L., Juglans mandshurika Maxim, Juglans regia L., Juglans nigra L., Phellodendron amurense Rupr., Quercus borealis Michx. Встановлено, що деревні інтродуценти займають всього 3 % від площі НПП, причому найбільшу площу серед інтродукованих видів займає Quercus borealis – 279,6 га, що становить 85,6 % площі, зайнятої інтродуцентами. Виявлено, що за походженням інтродуковані види дендрофлори поділяються на 3 групи і найбільше серед них видів, що мають північноамериканське походження (62,5 %). На другому місці знаходяться види – вихідці з Азії (25 %). Найменше серед інтродукованих видів дендрофлори Національного природного парку середземноморських видів (12,5 %). Встановлено, що насадження інтродуцентів перебувають на першій стадії дигресії і основними негативними чинниками, які впливають на стан насаджень, є засмічення території рекреантами, випас худоби та збір грибів. Досліджено, що для покращення ситуації необхідно огородити підріст, організувати збір насіння інтродуцентів та вирощування їх у розсаднику, покласти на майстра обходу контроль за своєчасним прибиранням території.

The Nearctic leafminer of black walnut Coptodisca juglandiella (Chambers, 1874) was found in Hungary and reported as new for Europe. Larvae were found in leafmines on black walnut (Juglans nigra (L.)), white walnut (J. cinerea (L.)) and Arizona walnut (J. major (Torr.)); the latter two Juglans species are new host plant records for C. juglandiella. Mines of Coptodisca lucifluella (Clemens, 1860), another Nearctic invader, were found on leaves of bitternut hickory (Carya cordiformis (Wangenh.) K.Koch) and Caucasian wingnut (Pterocarya fraxinifolia (Lam). Spach.) (a new hostplant record), in addition to common walnut (Juglans regia L.). Interestingly, C. lucifluella is thought to have performed a host plant shift after its introduction into Europe, whereas C. juglandiella apparently did not. Coptodisca juglandiella has three generations in Hungary. The autumn generations of both species produced many more mines than the spring generations. One hymenopteran parasitoid specimen was reared from C. juglandiella. Larvae, mines and adults of C. juglandiella and C. juglandiella can be easily distinguished, differences are presented and illustrated. The genitalia of C. juglandiella are described for the first time.
