57Fe Mössbauer spectra are reported for neutral FeX2(diars)2 (X = Cl, Br, I, NCS) complexes and newly prepared cationic [FeClL(diars)2]Y (L = CO, P(OMe)3, P(OPh)3; Y = SnCl3, BPh4) compounds. Using partial quadrupole splittings to calculate quadrupole splittings, all compounds are assigned the trans structure. From 57Fe centre shifts and quadrupole splittings, diars is found to be an appreciably poorer σ donor than analogous chelating phosphines, and a very similar σ donor and π acceptor to o-phenanthroline.
