Cell supported Pd metal nanoparticles are sustainably synthesised via microbial bioreduction. Bio-Pd nanoparticles are effective heterogeneous catalysts that catalyse industrially important reactions, such as hydrogenation and C–C coupling reactions.

: Catalysis is the multidisciplinary field involving many areas of chemistry, notably in organometallic chemistry and materials science. It has great applications in synthesis of many industrially applicable compounds such as fuels and fine chemicals. The activity and selectivity are a key issue in catalysis that generally allied to high surface area. The current research activities mainly deal with the homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. Homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis have certain drawbacks which restricts their application to great extent but have their own advantages. Hence, it has a predominant concern of current research to find out an alternate to overcome their drawbacks. Therefore, it is highly desirable to find a catalytic protocol that offers high selectivity and excellent product yield with quick and easy recovery. Along with their various applications as alternatives to conventional bulk materials nanomaterial have established its great role in different industrial and scientific applications. Nanocatalysis has emerged as new alternative to the conventional homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. The nanomaterials are responsible to enhance surface area of the catalyst, which ultimately increases the catalyst reactants contacts. In addition, it acts as robust material and has high surface area like heterogeneous catalysts. Insolubility of such nanomaterial in reaction medium makes them easily separable, hence, catalyst can be easily separate from the product. Hence, it has been proven that nanocatalysts behave like homogeneous as well as heterogeneous catalysts which work as a bridge between the conventional catalytic systems. Considering these merits; researchers has paid their attention towards applications of nanocatalyst in several organic reactions. This review article focused on the catalytic applications of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) such as Pd, Ag, Au, Cu, Pt in ligand free coupling reactions. In addition, it covers applications of bimetallic and multimetallic nanoparticles in ligand free coupling reactions.

Supported metal nanoparticles form the basis of heterogeneous catalysts. Above a certain nanoparticle size, it is generally assumed that adsorbates bond in an identical fashion as on a semiinfinite crystal. This assumption has allowed the database on metal single crystals accumulated over the past 40 years to be used to model heterogeneous catalysts. Using a surface science approach to CO adsorption on supported Pd nanoparticles, we show that this assumption may be flawed. Near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure measurements, isolated to one nanoparticle, show that CO bonds upright on the nanoparticle top facets as expected from single-crystal data. However, the CO lateral registry differs from the single crystal. Our calculations indicate that this is caused by the strain on the nanoparticle, induced by carpet growth across the substrate step edges. This strain also weakens the CO–metal bond, which will reduce the energy barrier for catalytic reactions, including CO oxidation.

In this report, chitin and chitosan nanocrystals were used as biomass-based supports for Pd nanoparticles (NPs) used as a heterogeneous catalyst for the Heck coupling reaction. By using a one-pot fabrication method, a Pd salt precursor was directly reduced and deposited onto these nanocrystal catalysts. Characterization of these nanocomposites showed disperse Pd NPs on the surfaces of the chitinous nanocrystals. Heck coupling model reactions revealed full product yield in relatively benign conditions, outcompeting the use of other catalysts supported on biomass-based nanomaterials, including cellulose nanocrystals. These initial results show the potential for using chitinous nanomaterials as effective catalyst supports in cross-coupling reactions.

In the last decade, the use of heterogeneous catalysts based on Metal Nanoparticles (MNPs) has attracted increasing attention due to their prominence as nanocatalysts in several key chemical transformations. Notably, it is well identified that supporting Metal Nanoparticles (MNPs) with suitable solid surfaces can protect the MNPs from leaching, deactivation, and also increasing its ease of separation and possible reusability. Graphene oxide (GO) as a conductive surface could have non-covalent bonding interactions like hydrogen bonding, electrostatic and π –π* stacking interactions with substrate leading to activation of the substrate. Remarkably, it is recognized that bimetallic nanoparticles supported on graphene oxide often show novel properties that are not present on either of the parent metal or surfaces. In this review, we tried to reveal the potential advantages of bimetallic and trimetallic nanoparticles supported on graphene oxide in organic transformations, including the reduction of nitroarenes, Suzuki-Miyaura and Sonogashira coupling reactions.

Hybridisation of mesoporous organosilicas (MO) to reinforce the surface capability in adsorption and stabilisation of noble metal nanoparticles is of great attention in generating/supporting noble metal within their matrices and transforming them into efficient heterogeneous catalysts. Here, we used a unique hybrid of organic-inorganic mesoporous silica in which pore profile pattern was similar to the well-known mesoporous silica, SBA-15 for catalysis. This hybrid mesoporous organosilica was further engaged as a support in the synthesis and stabilisation of Pd nanoparticles on its surface, and then, the obtained Pd-supported MO was employed as a heterogeneous green catalyst in the conversion of aqueous p-nitrophenol (PNP) to p-aminophenol (PAP) at room temperature with efficient recyclability.
