Abstract Integrating multiple properties in a single system is crucial for the continuous developments in electronic devices. However, some physical properties are mutually exclusive in nature. Here, we report the coexistence of two seemingly mutually exclusive properties-polarity and two-dimensional conductivity-in ferroelectric Ba0.2Sr0.8TiO3 thin films at the LaAlO3/Ba0.2Sr0.8TiO3 interface at room temperature. The polarity of a ∼3.2 nm Ba0.2Sr0.8TiO3 thin film is preserved with a two-dimensional mobile carrier density of ∼0.05 electron per unit cell. We show that the electronic reconstruction resulting from the competition between the built-in electric field of LaAlO3 and the polarization of Ba0.2Sr0.8TiO3 is responsible for this unusual two-dimensional conducting polar phase. The general concept of exploiting mutually exclusive properties at oxide interfaces via electronic reconstruction may be applicable to other strongly-correlated oxide interfaces, thus opening windows to new functional nanoscale materials for applications in novel nanoelectronics.

ABSTRACTWe present the synthesis and magnetic properties of Co nanorods spontaneously organized in superlattices over a surface of several microns. This material results from the thermal decomposition of a cobalt precursor under hydrogen, in the presence of a long-chain amine and a long-chain acid as shape control agents. These nanorod superlattices are ferromagnetic at room temperature and they are characterized by a strong coercive field as a consequence of their large magnetic anisotropy. This system can be considered as a good candidate for high density magnetic recording.

AbstractAnisortopic Si dry etching is usually carried out with chlorinated gases for electronic devices such as Si-LSIs. We had another look at Si dry etching with fluorinated gases in order to obtain an ideal air hole for two-dimensional Si photonic crystal. We simulated vertical Si etching, and showed the possibility that single crystal Si can be etched vertically with high selectivity to the etching mask using fluorinated gases. We investigated ECR etching with an SF6-CF4 mixture, and vertical Si etching was achieved at room temperature. High Si/Ni selectivity above 100 was also obtained. Two-dimensional Si photonic crystal with a photonic band gap between 1.25 and 1.51 μm was produced using SF6-CF4 ECR plasma and a thin Ni mask.

The magnetic properties of single-phase 2:17 compounds of the composition Sm2Fe17−xGaxHy were investigated. The substitution of Ga for Fe in the Sm2Fe17 compound resulted in a substantial increase in the Curie temperature and, for alloys with x > 2, the formation of a uniaxial magnetic anisotropy at room temperature. The diffusion of hydrogen into those compounds that exhibit an easy axis anisotropy causes a transition back to a planar anisotropy. This indicates that the presence of interstitial hydrogen is detrimental to the hard magnetic properties of these materials.

ABSTRACTThe room temperature structural, magnetization and magnetoresistive properties of Ni-nanowires of diameters 18, 30 and 78 nm and various lengths, fabricated by electrochemical deposition of Ni in the nanopores of anodic alumina, are investigated. The crystallographic orientation depends on the diameter of nanowires. Nanowires show perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and enhanced coercivity (Hc) and remanent magnetization (Mr) values of up to 500 Oe and 50% respectively. An electrodeposited Ni-layer (5 μm) on copper substrate shows in plane magnetic anisotropy and the Hc and Mr values are 97 Oe and 37%. Ni-nanowires and Ni-layer show an anisotropic magnetoresistive behaviour.

AbstractThe new Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3-SrMnO3−δ solid solution materials were fabricated via sol–gel method. The random incorporation of Sr and Mn cations into host lattice of Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 resulted in structural distortion and influenced on the reduction of the optical band gap from 3.07 eV to 1.81 eV for pure Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 and 9 mol% SrMnO3−δ solid solution into Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3. The magnetic properties of Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 materials at room temperature were tuned via compensation of diamagnetic material with weak-ferromagnetism to ferromagnetism with low SrMnO3−δ content and combination of paramagnetism/antiferromagnetism-like and ferromagnetism with higher SrMnO3−δ content solid solution in Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3. The tunable magnetic and optical properties of lead-free ferroelectric materials was promising for their application to green electronic devices.

Abstract The anomalous Nernst effect in nanostructured magnetic materials is a key phenomenon to optimally control and employ the internal energy dissipated in electronic devices, being dependent on, for instance, the magnetic anisotropy of the active element. Thereby, here, we report a theoretical and experimental investigation of the magnetic properties and anomalous Nernst effect in a flexible magnetostrictive film with induced uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and under external stress. Specifically, we calculate the magnetization behavior and the thermoelectric voltage response from a theoretical approach for a planar geometry, with magnetic free energy density that takes into account the induced uniaxial and magnetoelastic anisotropy contributions. Experimentally, we verify modifications of the effective magnetic anisotropy by changing the external stress, and explore the anomalous Nernst effect, a powerful tool to investigate the magnetic properties of magnetostrictive materials. We find quantitative agreement between experiment and numerical calculations, thus elucidating the magnetic behavior and thermoelectric voltage response. Besides, we provide evidence to confirm the validity of the theoretical approach to describe the magnetic properties and anomalous Nernst effect in ferromagnetic magnetostrictive films having uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and submitted to external stress. Hence, the results place flexible magnetostrictive systems as promising candidates for active elements in functionalized touch electronic devices.
