: In recent years, SLNs and NLCs are among the popular drug delivery systems studied for delivery of lipophilic drugs. Both systems have demonstrated several beneficial properties as an ideal drug-carrier, optimal drug-loading and good long-term stability. NLCs are getting popular due to their stability advantages and possibility to load various oil components either as an active or as a matrix. This review screens types of oils used till date in combination with solid lipid to form NLCs. These oils are broadly classified in two categories: Natural oils and Essential oils. NLCs offer range advantages in drug delivery due to the formation of imperfect matrix owing to the presence of oil. The type and percentage of oil used determines optimal drug loading and stability. Literature shows that variety of oils is used in NLCs mainly as matrix, which is from natural origin, triglycerides class. On the other hand, essential oils not only serve as a matrix but as an active. In short, oil is the key ingredient in formation of NLCs, hence needs to be selected wisely as per the performance criteria expected.

Corneal keratoectasia and dry eye syndrome (DES) are two of the most prevalent eye diseases. A number of studies is being carried out aimed at identifying and analyzing the annual increase in incidence of these diseases in population strata. Treatment and rehabilitation of patients with keratoectasia and DES remain topical issues in modern ophthalmology. Conventional treatment methods are not always effective, and scleral lenses (SCLs) may be considered an alternative. In this article, the authors expand on technology of manufacturing of OKVision® SMARTFIT™ scleral contact lenses.

Aims and Background Classical irradiation of carcinoma of the nasopharynx involves large fields and high doses; therefore, significant late toxicity and late side effects are to be expected. Given the fact that nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a relatively radiosensitive disease and a significant proportion of patients are long-term survivors, late visual and auditory complications of treatment are of utmost concern for patients and radiation oncologists. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term visual and auditory toxicity in patients treated with radiotherapy for NPC. Methods and Study Design Forty-three long-term survivors (including 11 children), following definitive radiotherapy for NPC, underwent a thorough visual and auditory evaluation 2–22 years after their treatment. Ophthalmological examination consisted of anamnesis of dry eye syndrome and visual acuity, visual acuity testing, slit-lamp examination, Schirmer test, fundus examination, and intraocular pressure measurement, as well as fluorescein angiography in patients with pathological vascular findings in the fundus examination. Audiological evaluation included anamnesis of hearing loss, tinnitus or vertigo, examination of the ears and nasopharynx, audiogram, and tympanogram. Results Radiation retinopathy was found in 16% of patients by fundus examination, with one patient (2.3%) developing blindness. Severe dry eye syndrome was present in 26%. Fifty-six percent had some degree of hearing impairment, with 74% showing severe sensorineural hearing loss. Fifty-eight percent of patients reported tinnitus and 26% reported suffering from dizziness. Radiation retinopathy as well as all manifestations of auditory toxicity were found to bear a direct correlation with dose per fraction. Conclusions Unless there is tumor involvement, the orbital contents should be completely excluded from the target volume. Auditory toxicity is significant when treating NPC with two-dimensional techniques.

This study presents the design of novel composites nanogels, based on poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate and natural zeolite particles, that are able to act as materials with controlled drug delivery properties. Natural zeolite–nanogels composite, with varying zeolite contents, were obtained by an inverse mini-emulsion technique and loaded with 5-fluorouracil, a widely used chemotherapeutic drug. Herein, the possibility of adjusting final properties by means of modifying the preparation conditions was investigated. The prepared composite nanogels are characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). In light of this tunable drug-loading capability, swelling behaviour, and cytotoxicity, these composite nanogels could be highly attractive as drug reservoirs.

Abstract Electrospun membranes are attracting interest as a drug delivery system because of their material composition flexibility and versatile drug loading. In this study, the electrospun membrane was loaded with doxorubicin (DOX) via electrostatic adsorption for long-term drug delivery. DOX loading process was optimized by varying temperature, time, drug concentration, pH, and ionic strength of solutions. The loading process did not impair the structural properties of the membrane. Next, we investigated the drug release kinetics using spectroscopic techniques. The composite membranes released 22% of the adsorbed DOX over the first 48 h, followed by a slower and sustained release over 4 weeks. The DOX release was sensitive to acidic solutions that the release rate at pH 6.0 was 1.27 times as that at pH 7.4. The DOX-loaded membranes were found to be cytotoxic to U-87 MG cells in vitro that decreased the cell viability from 82.92% to 25.49% from 24 h to 72 h of co-incubation. These membranes showed strong efficacy in suppressing tumour growth in vivo in glioblastoma-bearing mice that decreased the tumour volume by 77.33% compared to blank membrane-treated group on Day 20. In conclusion, we have developed an effective approach to load DOX within a clinically-approved poly (L-lactic acid)/gelatin membrane for local and long-term delivery of DOX for the treatment of glioblastoma.

The article presents data on the use of a new generation of eye drops on the base of ectoine natural molecule in the treatment of dry eye syndrome (DES). Рurpose. To study the effect of eye drops on the base of ectoine on the status of the anterior surface of the eye in patients with clinical signs of DES. Material and methods. Thirty women with DES who use hormonal medications for the treatment of the menopausal clinical manifestations regularly (the first group), and thirty men with primary open-angle glaucoma and the DES caused by long-term use of glaucoma drops with a preservative (the second group) were involved in this study. Results. It was revealed the positive influence of natural molecule of ectoine on the tears film, eye surface and patients comfortable life. The authors analyzed the results of ordinary and special methods of eye examination and prove that the level of dynamics of reparative processes at the anterior surface of the eye becomes more expressive due to long-term use of eye drops on the base of ectoine.
