This feature article describes the recent progress in the synthesis and application of short tubular molecules bearing multiple (≥3) polyaromatic rings (e.g., anthracene, pyrene, chrysene, anthanthrenylene, and HBC). These polyaromatic tubes display characteristic properties such as strong fluorescent emission, a selective molecular binding ability, efficient host–guest energy transfer and open–closed structural transformations.

Photochemical irradiation of porphyrins or phthalocyanines with violet or ultraviolet light absorbed by their second or higher absorption bands populates their higher excited states. These higher excited states generally dissipate very rapidly, but, competing with such rapid deactivation, often show unique behaviour different from the lowest excited states populated under visible light irradiation of the first absorption band, namely wavelength-dependent reactions or emission. The higher excited states often exhibit characteristic emission and enhanced reactivity in electron transfer, energy transfer and so on, competing with rapid deactivation. This paper attempts to summarize our work, perfomed particularly by means of femtosecond spectroscopy, and recent progress in this area.

Recently, phase-sensitive Optical Time-Domain Reflectometry (Φ-OTDR)-based vibration sensor systems have gained the interest of many researchers and some efforts have been undertaken to push the performance limitations of Φ-OTDR sensor systems. Thus, progress in different areas of their performance evaluation factors such as improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), spatial resolution (SR) in the sub-meter range, enlargement of the sensing range, increased frequency response bandwidth over the conventional limits, phase signal demodulation and chirped-pulse Φ-OTDR for quantitative measurement have been realized. This paper presents an overview of the recent progress in Φ-OTDR-based vibration sensing systems in the different areas mentioned above.

Metal-enhanced photocatalysis has recently received increasing interest, mainly due to the ability of metal to directly or indirectly degrade pollutants. In this review, we briefly review the recent breakthroughs in metal-enhanced photocatalysis. We discussed the recent progress of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect and small size effect of metal nanoparticles on photocatalysis; in particular, we focus on elucidating the mechanism of energy transfer and hot electron injection/transfer effect of metal nanoparticles and clusters while as photocatalysts or as cophotocatalysts. Finally, we discuss the potential applications of metal-enhanced photocatalysis, and we also offer some perspectives for further investigations.
