Twofold hydroboration of the bulky Mes*P(vinyl)2phosphane with Piers’ borane [HB(C6F5)2] followed by C6F5/H exchange with 9-BBN generated a reactive P/B/BH FLP structure that cleanly reduced carbon-monoxide at the trifunctional frustrated Lewis pair framework to the [B]-formyl stage.

The reversible enamine/HB(C6F5)2 Lewis adduct reacts with CO by selective head to tail coupling whereas it reacts with NO via a vicinal N/B Lewis pair to give a head to head NO/NO coupling product.

Reaction of the –CH2OSiMe3 substituted allyldimesitylphosphane with HB(C6F5)2 resulted in a hydroboration/(C6F5)2BOSiMe3 elimination sequence to give the phosphinomethyl substituted cyclopropane derivative, probably via a phosphiranium type intermediate.
