AbstractThis work investigates the effect of the surface charges of oil droplets and carbonate rocks in brine and in surfactant solutions on oil production. The influences of the cations in brine and the surfactant types on the zeta-potentials of both oil droplets and carbonate rock particles are studied. It is found that the addition of anionic and cationic surfactants in brine result in both negative or positive zeta-potentials of rock particles and oil droplets respectively, while the zwitterionic surfactant induces a positive charge on rock particles and a negative charge on oil droplets. Micromodels with a CaCO3 nanocrystal layer coated on the flow channels were used in the oil displacement tests. The results show that when the oil-water interfacial tension (IFT) was at 10−1 mN/m, the injection of an anionic surfactant (SDS-R1) solution achieved 21.0% incremental oil recovery, higher than the 12.6% increment by the injection of a zwitterionic surfactant (SB-A2) solution. When the IFT was lowered to 10−3 mM/m, the injection of anionic/non-ionic surfactant SMAN-l1 solution with higher absolute zeta potential value (ζoil + ζrock) of 34 mV has achieved higher incremental oil recovery (39.4%) than the application of an anionic/cationic surfactant SMAC-l1 solution with a lower absolute zeta-potential value of 22 mV (30.6%). This indicates that the same charge of rocks and oil droplets improves the transportation of charged oil/water emulsion in the porous media. This work reveals that the surface charge in surfactant flooding plays an important role in addition to the oil/water interfacial tension reduction and the rock wettability alteration.

This paper presents the synthesis and evaluation of physicochemical behavior of a new series of N-alkyl-bis-o-aminobenzamides (BOABs) in aqueous solution. The study was targeted to the complexing capacity of five metal ions (Fe2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+) of environmental concern as the medullar principle of a liquid phase sensor for its application in the determination of these metal ions due to its versatility of use. Molecular fluorescence, UV-visible and Zeta potential were measured for five BOABs and the effect of alkyl groups with different central chain length (n = 3, 4, 6, 8 and 10) on physicochemical performance determined. The results have shown that these derivatives present higher sensibility and selectivity for Cu2+ even in the presence of the other metal ions. An additional application test was done adding a pectin (0.1 wt %) solution to the BOAB-Cu+2 complex to obtain a precipitate (flocs) as a potential selective separation process of Cu from aqueous solution. The solid was then lyophilized and analyzed by SEM-EDS, the images showed spheric forms containing Cu+2 with diameter of approximately of 8 μm and 30 wt %.

Hydroxycarbonate apatite (HCA), which formed on a poly(lactic acid) (PLA) composite membrane containing vaterite or calcium chloride after soaking in simulated body fluid, was examined to clarify the importance of the ceramic phases in the composites. FT-IR spectra showed that the ratio of CO3/PO4 in the infrared adsorption bands of HCA formed on the PLA composite containing vaterite was much larger than that of HCA formed on the PLA composite containing calcium chloride. Substitution of carbonate ion in hydroxyapatite is believed to be strongly influenced by ceramic phases in the composites. The zeta potentials of HCA formed on the PLA composite containing vaterite or calcium chloride was -6 mV or -17 mV, respectively. The zeta potential may be influenced by the amount of carbonate ion in hydroxyapatite.

The separation and purification of antibiotics with sorption by ion-exchange materials, as well as their delivery in biological processes by immobilization, are now widely used in biotechnology. There are many scientific studies in the literature on the sorption of antibiotics by polymer-based sorbents and inorganic materials, as well as the study of thermodynamics and kinetics of the process. In the literature, the acquisition of biologically active systems from the sorption of antibiotics by ion-exchange fibers based on various polymers and inorganic substances was carried out. However, the synthesis of selective gels for the effective separation of doxycycline and its delivery in different pH mediums by sorption with biodegradable, biocompatible polysaccharide-containing composites is one of the topical issues. Gel was synthesized from the cross-linking of N,N-diethyl N-methyl derivative of a natural polyaminosaccharide of chitosan by glutaric aldehyde. Also, pH-sensitive hydrogels that can swollen in water were synthesized from the cross-linking of a graft copolymer of cherry source gummiarabic with N-vinylpyrrolidone, as well as synthetic polymer polyacrylic acid with N,N-methylene-bis-acrylamide. The structure of the gels were identified by FTIR and NMR spectroscopy, and the sorption of doxycycline antibiotic from an aqueous solution was investigated. According to the values of zeta potential, the protonation of functional groups in the main macromolecule in an acidic medium leads to a value of zeta potential of 40÷80 mV on the surface of chitosan-based gel and others. Although the chemical structure is different, the isoelectric point is set around pH=6÷8 for all three hydrogels. The dependences of the sorption process on the amount of gels, antibiotic concentration, temperature, and pH medium were studied. The experimental data were analyzed using two adsorption models, Langmuir and Freundlich, with the later system providing the best fit. Doxycycline is adsorbed on the surface of chitosan, gummiarabic and polyacrylic acid based hydrogel composite through by physical interactions. Also, the results of thermodynamic parameters ΔG40 kJ/mol show that the nature of the adsorption process is physical, and spontaneous, too. Keywords: Chitosan, Gummiarabic-arabinogalactane, polyacrylic acid, hydrogel, sorption isoterms, doxycycline, thermodynamica.

A cold thermal energy storage system has been developed for HVAC. There are many ice-based cooling systems operating around the world. Ice slurry, which is a mixture of fine ice crystals and liquid water, is utilized in ice storage systems owing to its good flowability and large latent heat of fusion. For slurry ice production techniques, there are presently a number of commercially available ice slurry generators (e.g., Supercooled slurry ice generator, Scraper type generator, and Vacuum type generator, etc.). In the present study, a new method was developed to generate ice slurry without the deposition of an ice layer on a cooled surface. The basic components of the experimental apparatus is a cooling brine circulating loop, a high pressure pump, a valve, an aqueous solution flow loop containing the test section, which is made of transparent acrylic, and the associated instrumentation. This new method is based on freezing-point depression of the aqueous solution, which is maintained under high-pressure conditions. To control the timing for solidification and to generate ice slurry, we investigated the relationships among the pressure and temperature of the aqueous solution. The freezing phenomenon of the aqueous solution in the test section was observed in detail. As a result, we developed a new ice slurry generator based on the new method that controls the pressure and temperature of the aqueous solution. Experimental results showed that the characteristics of the ice slurry generation were closely related to the pressure and initial stage temperature of the test fluid. Finally, the optimum operation condition of the ice slurry generator based on visualization experiment was discussed.

Water-based slurries containing barium ferrite particles have been prepared and slip cast in magnetic field. This paper presents the characteristics of the suspensions in terms of Iso-Electric Points (IEP) and zeta potential that were evaluated through pH titration and polymer adsorption. Both enlarging the specific surface area of particles by planetary milling and adjusting the pH to low value apparently increase the zeta potentials. Stable slurry was obtained by adding polyethylene glycol (PEG) into the suspension at pH = 2 ~ 3.5. The steric repulsion plays key role in dispersion and PEG films served as insulative layers and mechanically kept particles from contact each other. The barium ferrite particles formed many stacks of plates during slip casting, which either aligned randomly without magnetic field applied or regularly aligned to form textured structure when magnetic field was applied.
