Recently, self-healing coating is classified as one of the smart coatings which has the ability to heal or repair damage of the coating to prevent further corrosion. The aim of this study is to synthesize the self-healing coatings from polymeric material and evaluate the performance and their corrosion behavior when coated on steel substrates. The corrosion tests were performed using immersion test and salt spray test method at room temperature. The immersion test shows that self-healing coating gives lower corrosion rate compared to pure epoxy paint, with a value of 0.02 and 0.05 mm/year respectively. Also, salt spray test shows similar trend as the immersion test, which is 0.11 and 0.19 mm/year for self-healing coating and pure epoxy paint respectively. While uncoated samples without any protection corroded at 0.89 mm/year. It was also found that the damage on self-healing coating was covered with zeolite from the microcapsules indicating that the self-healing agent was successfully synthesized and could function well. In other words, self-healing coating shows better corrosion resistance compared to the pure epoxy coating on steel substrate.

With the rapid development of marine transportation industry, biological fouling not only affects the speed of navigation but also highly increases fuel consumption. In the paper, a novel hydrogel-based fouling release coating is developed to address the issue by a combination of non-stick property with a low surface tension of the coating. A hydrogel-based silicone fouling release coating was synthesized and two kinds of different intermediate coatings were studied to give a proper match as the tie layer between the substrate coated with primer and the hydrogel silicone on the surface. The adhesion strength, surface tension as well as surface topography of the fouling release coating were studied. The corrosion resistance and anti-fouling performance of the substrates sprayed with the coating were characterized by salt spray test and immersion test in a simulated marine system. The results show that the adhesion between the substrate and the fouling release coating is grade two measured by grid test. The water contact angle of the coating is 104.8o and Rz of the coating is 10.71μm. The specimen is intact after 1000 hours under salt spray test. No diatom was found settled on the specimens in a simulated static marine system while a little diatom was observed on the specimens in a simulated dynamic marine system. It has been found that the intermediate coating comprising of epoxy resin gives proper match between the primer and the fouling release coating consisting of PDMS resin. The coating exhibits superior anti-fouling performance under stationary state.

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) has been a candidate prosthetic coating due to its excellent physical and chemical properties, and biocompatibility. However, the adhesion to a number of prosthetic materials is still an issue. Different techniques have been used to improve the adhesion of DLC on various substrates. In this paper, we report the fabrication of an adherent DLC coating on commercial 316 stainless steel by using pulsed laser deposition and a composition-graded intermediate layer. Intermediate layers with graded composition from stainless steel to DLC were obtained by designing an inlaid target. Raman spectrum analysis indicated that the grown DLC films are rich in sp3 bonds. The adhesion of the coatings as well as other properties of the intermediate layers are also discussed.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study the mechanical and corrosion behaviors of selective laser melting (SLM) 30CrMnSiA steel. Design/methodology/approach The microstructure, mechanical behavior and corrosion resistance of SLM 30CrMnSiA steel were studied by electrochemical test and immersion experiment. Findings The results showed that the microstructure of SLM 30CrMnSiA steel contained equiaxed fine (25.0 µm) ferrite and lamellar pearlite. The tensile strength of SLM 30CrMnSiA steel under the process parameters is 1,447 MPa and the elongation is 7.5%. As the immersion/salt spray test time increased to 15 days/48 h, corrosion mainly occurred in the local position of the sample and corrosion resistance decreased. When the immersion/salt spray test time increased to 30 days/168 h, the corrosion production covered the surface of the samples and the corrosion resistance increased. Originality/value The paper can guide the application and in situ repair for low-alloy steel by additive manufacturing.

In this paper, two kinds of different biodiesel were tested in terms of their impact on wear resistance of Si-DLC coated 100Cr6 flat worn by an oscillating 100Cr6 ball. The knowledge about the tribological behaviour of different types of biodiesel is rare. Rape and soybean are two of the most common natural sources for biodiesel production. Also, if the quality of biodiesel seems to be similar and, according to the demands, biodiesel from different natural origin could affect changes in the tribological behaviour. Although, soybean methyl ester (SME) gives the best results at room temperature wear tests, 150°C SME reaches wear rates of Si-DLC flat against 100Cr6 ball almost double as high as rapeseed methyl ester (RME). It is evident that, with increasing fraction of oxidation stabilizer C23H32O2, the wear rate increases. For silicon doped hydrogenated diamond-like carbon is especially suitable, for use in biodiesels, where certain fraction of humidity, dissociated water, or polar functional groups may present.

Magnetron sputtered non-hydrogenated diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings were tested against Al, Cu and Ti pins using a vacuum pin-on-disc tribometer. The objective was to compare Al, Ti, and Cu transfer to DLC coatings in air (29% RH) and an inert atmosphere (argon). In argon, a significant amount of adhesion and material transfer occurred from the Al and Ti pins to the DLC coating surfaces inflicting severe damage to the coatings. Wear and material transfer of the DLC coating against Cu were negligible in argon. Compared to tests in argon, the tribological performance of the DLC coatings against Al and Ti improved significantly in ambient air. In contrast, the wear rate of the DLC coatings against Cu was much higher in ambient air compared to that in argon.

Abstract The results have been presented of an experimental study of the tribological behavior of diamond-like carbon coatings (DLC) doped with chromium and molybdenum obtained by reactive magnetron sputtering. The effect of alloying with these metals on the tribological characteristics of boundary lubrication of a DLC coating/steel contact has been studied for the case of three model lubricants (inactive, surfactant, and chemically active). It has been shown that doping with chromium and molybdenum improves both the tribological characteristics of coatings under dry friction and the lubricating properties of the model oils, while alloying with molybdenum provides lower coefficients of friction and less wear at dry and boundary friction than alloying with chromium.

This paper reports comparative studies on effects of interlayer on mechanical properties of diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings. Two interlayers, TiC/Ti and CrC/Cr, were deposited and studied. The DLC coatings were prepared by using an unbalanced magnetron sputtering system. The chemical composition, micro-structure, constituted phases, and fundamental mechanical and tribological properties were evaluated. The results showed that the two amorphous (a-) DLC coatings were obtained. The a-DLC coating with the TiC/Ti interlayer showed higher adhesion, hardness and wear resistance than the one with the CrC/Cr interlayer.
