For practical applications, both environmental and economic aspects are highly required to consider in the development of recycling of fibre reinforced polymers (FRPs) encountering their end-of-life. Here, a sustainable, low cost, and efficient approach for the recycling of the glass fibre (GF) from GF reinforced epoxy polymer (GFRP) waste is introduced, based on a microwave-assisted chemical oxidation method. It was found that in a one-step process using microwave irradiation, a mixture of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as a green oxidiser and tartaric acid (TA) as a natural organic acid could be used to decompose the epoxy matrix of a waste GFRP up to 90% yield. The recycled GFs with ~92.7% tensile strength, ~99.0% Young’s modulus, and ~96.2% strain-to-failure retentions were obtained when compared to virgin GFs (VGFs). This short microwave irradiation time using these green and sustainable recycling solvents makes this a significantly low energy consumption approach for the recycling of end-of-life GFRPs.

Mixing ionic liquids is a suitable strategy to tailor properties, e.g., to reduce melting points. The present study aims to widen the application range of low-toxic choline-based ionic liquids by studying eight binary phase diagrams of six different choline carboxylates. Five of them show eutectic points with melting points dropping by 13 to 45 °C. The eutectic mixtures of choline acetate and choline 2-methylbutarate were found to melt at 45 °C, which represents a remarkable melting point depression compared to the pure compounds with melting points of 81 (choline acetate) and 90 °C (choline 2-methylbutarate), respectively. Besides melting points, the thermal stabilities of the choline salt mixtures were investigated to define the thermal operation range for potential practical applications of these mixtures. Typical decomposition temperatures were found between 165 and 207 °C, with choline lactate exhibiting the highest thermal stability.

The magnetic composite microspheres of cassava starch have been prepared by magnetization of one-step oxidation, using cassava starch as natural macromolecule material. The condition effect on magnetic content was evaluated by single factor experiments, such as the mass concentration of starch, reaction temperature, reaction time, stirring speed, initial pH and ferrous solution volume. Preparation conditions were optimized by these evaluation experiments. The prepared magnetic composite microspheres were characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and other means.

Fe3O4@RF microspheres with different phenolic (RF) layer thicknesses are prepared by adjusting the polymerization time. With the prepared Fe3O4@RF as the precursor, Fe@C composite microspheres with rattle-like morphology are obtained through one-step controlled carbonization. This method simplifies the preparation of rattle-shaped microspheres from sandwich microspheres. Fe@C microspheres exhibit excellent microwave absorbing properties. The morphology and composition of the product are investigated depending on the effects of carbonization temperature, time and thickness of the RF layer. When the carbonization temperature is 700 °C, the carbonization time is 12 h and the polymer shell thickness is 62 nm, the inner hollow Fe3O4 is completely reduced to Fe. The absorption properties of the materials are compared before and after the reduction of Fe3O4. Both Fe@C-12 and Fe3O4@C-700 show excellent absorbing properties. When the filler content is 50%, the maximum reflection loss (RLmax) of the rattle-shaped Fe@C microspheres is −50.15 dB, and the corresponding matching thickness is 3.5 mm. At a thickness of 1.7 mm, the RLmax of Fe3O4@C-700 is −44.42 dB, which is slightly worse than that of Fe@C-12. Both dielectric loss and magnetic loss play a vital role in electromagnetic wave absorption. This work prepares rattle-shaped absorbing materials in a simple way, which has significance for guiding the construction of rattle-shaped materials.

Metasurfaces operating in the cross-polarization scheme have shown an interesting degree of control over the wavefront of transmitted light. Nevertheless, their inherently low efficiency in visible light raises certain concerns for practical applications. Without sacrificing the ultrathin flat design, we propose a bilayer plasmonic metasurface operating at visible frequencies, obtained by coupling a nanoantenna-based metasurface with its complementary Babinet-inverted copy. By breaking the radiation symmetry because of the finite, yet small, thickness of the proposed structure and benefitting from properly tailored intra- and interlayer couplings, such coupled bilayer metasurface experimentally yields a conversion efficiency of 17%, significantly larger than that of earlier single-layer designs, as well as an extinction ratio larger than 0 dB, meaning that anomalous refraction dominates the transmission response. Our finding shows that metallic metasurface can counterintuitively manipulate the visible light as efficiently as dielectric metasurface (~20% in conversion efficiency in Lin et al.’s study), although the metal’s ohmic loss is much higher than dielectrics. Our hybrid bilayer design, still being ultrathin (~λ/6), is found to obey generalized Snell’s law even in the presence of strong couplings. It is capable of efficiently manipulating visible light over a broad bandwidth and can be realized with a facile one-step nanofabrication process.

The curing behaviors for high-performance resin system phthalonitrile-containing benzoxazine and epoxy (BA-Ph/EP), particularly the effect of the binary system composition and processing conditions on their processabilities were investigated and discussed in this article. Results indicated that all BA-Ph/EP prepolymers exhibited low initial processing viscosity (<0.3 Pa s) and have kept stable low viscosity until gel transition. The suitable molding temperature (ranged from 150°C to 180°C) and molding time (ranged from 20 min to 80 min) could be selected for practical applications of BA-Ph/EP systems. The studies of curing behaviors and gelatinization for BA-Ph/EP systems give further understanding of the curing kinetics and guidance for the fabrication of high-performance copolymers/polymers. The introduction of EP could significantly improve the cross-linking density of BA-Ph/EP polymers, and the appropriate content of EP is the key fact for the improvement. In addition, the effects of postcuring conditions on thermal properties and the adhesive property of BA-Ph/EP polymers were monitored. The thermal stabilities and adhesive property of various polymers also showed an obvious influence with the introduction of EP. The systematic study of BA-Ph/EP system could enable a broadened industrial application, especially in the areas that require high-temperature resistance.
