We reported the synthesis of vertically aligned dense ZnO nanowires using Zn powder as the source material by a hydrothermal method and a postannealing process at 200°C. The as-synthesized ZnO nanowires are 100–200 nm in diameter and several micrometers in length and each nanowire has a tapered tip. The morphologies of the products remain after post-annealing treatment. Structural analysis indicates the ZnO nanowire is single crystalline and grows along the [0001] direction. The possible growth mechanism for ZnO nanowire bundles is proposed.

ZnO nanowires are currently used in many application fields. Thermal stability is often a concern in terms of the mechanical response and, in particular, for the elasticity of the nanowires. Literature works focused, to a certain degree, on the nanowires heating response. Anyhow, no experimental data are nowadays available in literature on the low- and very low-temperature exposures. In the present study, deep-cryogenic treatment was performed on vertically aligned ZnO nanowires produced by metal organic chemical vapor deposition. The critical buckling stress and strain of individual nanowires was not significantly influenced by the cryogenic exposure, while the bulk ZnO halved.

This study presents a novel sulfuration–desulfuration sensing effect of an intrinsic (i.e., uncatalyzed) ZnO nanowire array for trace-level detection of H2S. The novel H2S sensing mechanism is clarified by specifically designed experiments, material characterization and theoretical analysis.
