2-(2-(Benzyloxy)ethoxy)-1,3,2-dioxaphospholane-2-oxide was developed for the ring-opening polymerization to multifunctional poly(phosphoester)s. An acetal-protected comonomer allows selective release of the hydroxyl groups by hydrolysis and hydrogenation.

AbstractFor the purpose of increasing the hydrophilicity of polylactide, new block copolymers with protected functional groups, poly(lactide-co-(S)-b-benzyl aspartate)-poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(lactide-co-(S)- b-benzyl aspartate), were synthesized via ring-opening polymerization of D,L-lactide and (3S, 6R,S)-3- [(benzyloxycarbonyl)methyl]-6-methylmorpholine-2,5-dione in the presence of hydroxyltelechelic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as an initiator at 140 °C for 24 h. The benzyl protective groups of the block copolymers were completely removed to give poly(lactide-co-(S)-aspartic acid)-PEO-poly(lactide-co-(S)-aspartic acid), (poly(DLLA-co-Asp)-b-PEO-b-poly(DLLA-co-Asp)). This shows lower crystallization and melting temperature compared with the polymers before deprotection. Poly(DLLA-co-Asp)-b-PEO-b-poly(DLLA-co-Asp) with 55.6 wt.-% of PEO is more hydrophilic, shows higher water absorption and is degraded faster than with 39.5 wt.-% of PEO.

AbstractA novel polydimethylsiloxane containing two primary hydroxyl groups at one single chain end was synthesized by five-step reactions which included esterification, hydroxyl protection, anionic ring-opening polymerization, hydrosilylation and deprotection. The prepared compounds in each step were characterized. The results showed that at each step synthesis was successfully carried out and objective products could be achieved.

Synthesis, physicochemical characterization, and the enzymatic degradation of the amphiphilic miktoarm star-shaped polymers is reported herein. First, star-shaped macroinitiators, based on N,N′-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and glycerol dimethacrylate (GDMA) ((PDMAEMA)n-PGDMA), were synthesized. Due to the presence of hydroxyl groups in the macroinitiator core, polyesters such as poly(ɛ-caprolactone) (P(ɛ-CL)), polylactide (PLA) and poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) were synthesized using ring opening polymerization (ROP). Comprehensive degradation studies on enzymatic degradation, using a lipase from Pseudomonas cepacia, were performed. Enzymatic degradation was monitored by weight measurements and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR). The fastest degradation rate was observed for the polymer with the lowest molecular weight. Amphiphilic miktopolymers may find application as biomaterials for long- or mid-term period drug-delivery systems.

Lignin-based polyols (LBPs) with controlled microstructure were obtained by cationic ring opening polymerization (CROP) of oxiranes in an organosolv lignin (OL) tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution. The control on the microstructure and consequently on the properties of the LBPs such as hydroxyl number, average molecular weight, melting, crystallization and decomposition temperatures, are crucial to determine the performance and application of the derived-products. The influence of key parameters, for example, molar ratio between the oxirane and the hydroxyl groups content in OLO, initial OL concentration in THF, temperature, specific flow rate and oxirane nature has been investigated. LBPs with hydroxyl numbers from 35 to 217 mg KOH/g, apparent average Mw between 5517 and 52,900 g/mol and melting temperatures from −8.4 to 18.4 °C were obtained. The CROP procedure allows obtaining of tailor-made LBPs for specific applications in a very simple way, opening the way to introduce LBPs as a solid alternative to substitute currently used fossil-based polyols.

AbstractA variety of poly(ε-caprolactone)-grafted dextran copolymers were synthesized with a controlled architecture through a three-step procedure: partial protection of the dextran hydroxyl groups by silylation, ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone initiated from remaining free hydroxyl groups on partially silylated dextran, and silyl ether deprotection under mild conditions. The potential of these amphiphilic grafted copolymers as surfactants was investigated by water/toluene interfacial tension measurements. Since each copolymer showed noticeable surfactant properties, their ability to form ‘surfactant-free’ nanoparticles was evaluated using the nanoprecipitation method. It was found that remarkably stable core (polyester) - shell (polysaccharide) nanoparticles with a mean diameter around 200 nm were formed.

For the composite catalyst, there existed synergetic catalytic effect between the hydroxyl groups and the metal center. All chain growth simultaneously proceeded between the layers or on the surface of HNTs, conducting the in situ ROP.
