AbstractWell oriented KYb(WO4)2 and KTb0.2Yb0.8(WO4)2 single crystals have been investigated for their magnetic and optical properties using the Raman and EPR techniques. The registered EPR signal is dominated by three lines ascribed to ytterbium ions: one main and two satellites. Tb ions, although non-paramagnetic, distinctly modify magnetic properties of the KYb(WO4)2 single crystal. Basic parameters of the spin Hamiltonian, including Zeeman and hyperfine terms (g and A matrices) as well the spatial orientation between principal and crystallographic axes systems were determined for both crystals.

Several REZnPnO phases of the ZrCuSiAs type (RE = rare earth element, Pn = P, As, Sb) were synthesized in X-ray-pure form in NaCl/KCl salt fluxes. The structure of PrZnSbO was refined from single-crystal diffractometer data: P4/nmm, a = 418.79(8), c = 946.7(5) pm, wR2 = 0.0349, 192 F2 values, 12 parameters. The REZnPnO pnictide oxides were studied with respect to magnetic susceptibility, 121Sb Mössbauer spectroscopy, and optical properties.

We report on the synthesis and physical properties of cm-sized CoGeO3 single crystals grown in a high pressure mirror furnace at pressures of 80 bar. Direction dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements on our single crystals reveal highly anisotropic magnetic properties that we attribute to the impact of strong single ion anisotropy appearing in this system with TN∼33.5 K. Furthermore, we observe effective magnetic moments that are exceeding the spin only values of the Co ions, which reveals the presence of sizable orbital moments in CoGeO3.

The electrochemical, optical and magnetic properties of a sulfate-bridged high spin Co(ii) dimer, [Co2(DMIM)4(μ2-O2,O,O′-SO4)2]·2MeCN are reported. Antiferromagnetic coupling across the μ2-(O2-sulfato) bridging mode has been identified with J = −28 cm−1.

Abstract I–III–VI2 Chalcopyrite Cu(In1−x Ga x )Se2 (CIGS) has attracted attention as absorbing layer in photovoltaic (PV) device. In this study, we investigated the fundamental properties of CIGS single crystals, and fabricated single crystal-based PV device. CIGS single crystals without secondary phase were successfully grown by In-solvent traveling heater method (THM). The conversion of conduction type from n- to p-type can be observed above 0.3 of Ga ratio x because of high acceptor defect concentration. PV device based on high-quality CIGS bulk single crystal demonstrates high open-circuit voltage of 0.765 V with the efficiency of 12.6%.

This paper presents magnetic properties of manganese substituted barium hexaferrite BaFe12-xMnxO19 single crystals. Crystals of BaFe12–xMnxO19 with x up to 1.5 and sizes up to 8 mm were observed. The influence of Fe substitution by Mn on the magnetic properties was investigated. For the BaFe10.5Mn1.5O19 single crystal samples saturation magnetization reduced from 72 to 63.5 emu/g at room temperature, and Curie temperature decreased from 455 to 380 °C.

A single crystal of Mg2TiO4 was grown by the travelling solvent float zone (TSFZ) method. The lattice parameter a = 0.8444(8) nm was determined by X-ray powder diffraction analysis. The optical properties of the Mg2TiO4 single crystals were studied using spectroscopic ellipsometry. The obtained results are discussed and compared with published data.
