A series of novel 1, 3, 4-oxadiazole analogues was synthesized from cyclization of hydrazones of substituted 1-ethyl-1,4-dihydro-7-methyl-4-oxo-1,8-naphthyridine-3-carbohydrazides were prepared from nalidixic acid. The structures of synthesized oxadiazole derivatives and their copper complexes were elucidated on the basis of FTIR, elemental analyses, 1H-NMR and atomic absorption spectral analysis. It was observed from spectral data that metal ligand ratio was 1:1 in all copper complexes and they were bidentate, coordination was found to be done through oxygen of 4-oxo group and nitrogen of oxadiazole ring. The synthesized compounds were further evaluated with biological activities and compared with parent hydrazones. Copper complexes possess antibacterial and antifungal activities better than the oxadiazoles while they have better antioxidant activity then copper complexes. Parent hydrazones were better in all biological activities than synthesized oxadiazoles.

Many derivatives of 2,3-dim ethoxy-4-hydroxypyridine, which were designed from examination of the structure-activity relationship of piericidins, were tested for inhibition of NADH-UQ reductase. The lipophilic side chain of those compounds was indicated to be a key part for activity and its optimal length was conjectured. By the use of two different phases of assay material, intact mitochondria and submitochondria, the size of a membrane effect was shown to depend on the structure of the side chain. 4-Hydroxyquinoline derivatives were also tested for an analogous role in relation to the electron transport function of menaquinone, and they were proven to be inhibitors of NADH-UQ reductase as good as the pyridine derivatives.

Abstract The herbicide 4,6-dinitro-o-cresol inhibits electron transport to ferricyanide and non-cyclic photophosphorylation for 50% at about 15 μm. At higher concentrations the photosystem I dependent Mehler reaction ascorbate/dichlorophenolindophenol to methyl viologen is stimulated, while cyclic photophosphorylation is inhibited. The herbicide thus is an inhibitory uncoupler. Although the chemical structure of 4,6-dinitro-o-cresol is different from that of the diuron-type herbicides, its site and mechanism of action is similar. Both 4,6-dinitro-o-cresol and diuron inhibit electron transport between the primary electron acceptor of Photosystem II and the plastoquinone pool. This causes a closing of the reaction centers of Photosystem II. The interaction with the inhibited molecule however is different for the two herbicides.

A series of six di- and tri-halogenated N-arylcinnamanilides designed as anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial agents was prepared and characterized. Since it is known that lipophilicity significantly influences the biological activity of compounds, the hydro-lipophilic properties of these di- and tri-substituted N-arylcinnamanilides were investigated in the study. All the discussed derivatives of cinnamic acid were analyzed using the reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography method to measure lipophilicity. The procedure was performed under isocratic conditions with methanol as an organic modifier in the mobile phase using an end-capped non-polar C18 stationary reversed-phase column. In the present study, the correlations between the logarithm of the capacity factor k and log P/Clog P values calculated in various ways as well as the relationships between the lipophilicity and the chemical structure of the studied compounds are discussed.
