This paper describes synthesis of a series of polyurethane (PU)/clay nanocomposites by using two different chain extenders ethylenediamine (ED) and 1,3-diamino-2-propanol (DAP). By using DAP as a chain extender, PU/clay nanocomposites show not only the stronger inter-and intrachain interactions through hydrogen bonding, but also exhibit enhanced clay exfoliation as evidenced by the disappearance of clay diffraction at 2θ = 2.5-10°.

Selecting lactam 2,6-pyridinedicarboxamide (PDCA) as the ligand and 1,4-butanediol as chain extender, we prepare polyurea polyurethane PDCA-PU; then, introduction of rare earth ion Eu3+ and small molecule ligands 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), synthesized binary and ternary polyurethane composite containing Eu3+, and comparing the fluorescence properties of the material. We investigated the thermal stability and luminescence properties of hybrids and found that the ternary hybrid materials exhibit better thermal stability and stronger emission intensity.

Thermo-sensitive polyurethane (TSPU) was synthesized from poly(ε-caprolactone) and 4,4’-methylenebis (phenyl isocyanate) by a two-step process with 1,4-butanediol as the chain extender. Following that, a novel temperature-sensitive material was created by the strategy of IPN from TSPU and PNIPAAm in the method of in situ polymerization. The chemical structure and thermo properties of the semi-IPN were characterized with FT-IR and DSC. The results prove that intensive inter-molecular interactions exist between TSPU and PNIPAAm chains, which have significant influence on the phase transition behaviors of the material. According to these results, the transition temperature of the semi-IPN can be adjusted in the range of 30~40 °C by controlling the composition of TSPU and the semi-IPNs.

The synthesis of 2-mercaptoethyl methacrylate from methacrylic acid and 2-mercaptoethanol by etherification using acetyl chloride as catalyst was optimized. The purity of the obtained product was controlled by gas chromatography and its identity confirmed by H-NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. 2-Mercapto-ethyl methacrylate could find application as a chain transfer agent in radical polymerizations.
