Can simulated patient encounters appear authentic? Development and pilot results of a rating instrument based on the portrayal of depressive patients.

Abstract. Studies of exercise in depression have not focused on persons already engaging in exercise. The current study aimed to provide an in-depth examination of exercise in depressive persons. In all, 62 depressive outpatients were compared with 62 parallelized nondepressive controls on various aspects of self-reported exercise (total amount, frequency, duration, intensity, type). Of the depressive participants, 52 % and of the nondepressive participants 76 % reported engaging in exercise. Compared with nondepressive exercisers, depressive exercisers exercised less (average total amount of M = 1.7 vs. M = 2.7 hr/week, including all intensity levels), were exercising less frequently (M = 1.7 vs. M = 2.6 sessions/week), and were engaged in fewer different exercise types (M = 1.4 vs. M = 2.0). Groups did not differ in intensity (M = 6.1 vs. 6.2 METs) or duration of exercise sessions (M = 1.1 hr). Exercisers with depression engage in exercise at reduced levels compared with nondepressive exercisers. Interventions to increase exercise in depressive patients should focus on raising the frequency of exercise sessions rather than the duration or intensity.

Thorell and Nyberg (2008 ) recently developed the Childhood Executive Functioning Inventory (CHEXI), a new rating instrument for executive functioning in day-to-day life which can be divided into four subscales: working memory, planning, inhibition, and regulation. Using an exploratory factor analysis on data from young Swedish children attending kindergarten, Thorell and Nyberg (2008 ) found a two-factor solution that taps working memory and inhibition. In the present study, we explored the psychometric characteristics of the French adaptation of the CHEXI. A group of 95 parents of 5- and 6-year-old children completed the CHEXI, 87 of whom were given clinical inhibition and working memory tasks. Confirmatory factor analyses confirmed the two-factor solution based on inhibition and working memory that was identified in the original study of Swedish children. Supplementary results indicated good internal and test-retest reliability for the entire scale, as well as for the two subscales identified. Correlation analyses showed no relationship between cognitive measures and the CHEXI subscales. Possible clinical applications for the CHEXI scales are discussed.

Freedom and Justice have always been challenged. Since the most remote times, and in the most varied circumstances of places and people, human beings have tried to clarify and put into practice these two controversial concepts. Freedom and Justice, in effect, are words, but also dreams, desires and practices that, not being imperfect, are less sublime and ambitious. Reflecting on them on the basis of an ethics of development and socioenvironmental sustainability is still a great challenge in our contemporaneity. This book is born from the need that we all have to reflect, understand what our role is in relation to the OTHER, understood as the other as Environment. Doing this from such disparate areas and at the same time as current as Economics, Philosophy and Ecology, is still a great opportunity to discuss complexity, transdisciplinarity and the inclusion of diverse themes, but which all converge in the Human Being and its relationship with the world. Endowing human beings with Freedom and a sense of Justice means RESPONSIBILITY. To be free and to want a better and fairer world is to endow our existence with meaning and meaning. Agency, autonomy, functioning, dignity, rights, are capacities that must be leveraged individually and collectively for authentic development to exist. Development as Freedom is a valid proposal for thinking about a socio-environmental rationality that interferes in the controversial relations between economics, ethics and the environment.
