The reaction of acetic anhydride with ethoxycarbonylmethylenetriphenylphosphorane has been shown by a single-crystal X-ray structure analysis to yield 1-ethoxycarbonyl-2-oxopropylidenetriphenylphosphorane rather than the previously reported phosphoniurn salt (3b). The geometry of resonance-stabilized phosphoranes is also discussed.
