A Pt monolayer supported on an Engel–Brewer alloy, Hf–Ir, is highly active in oxidizing ethylene glycol into CO2. This enhanced performance originates from the lattice mismatch between surface Pt and the Hf–Ir support and the highly reducible Hf oxide adjacent to Pt sites.
