A novel 3D rGO–HCS nanostructure was designed via a hydrothermal self-assembly method. When used as a sulfur cathode, it delivers a low capacity-decay rate of 0.052% per cycle after 400 cycles and shows a high rate performance.

A double-hierarchical sulfur host has been synthesized in which hierarchical carbon spheres, constructed from building blocks of hollow carbon nanobubbles used for loading sulfur, are sealed by a polar MoS2 coating that is composed of ultrathin nanosheets (MoS2@HCS composite).

Well-designed hollow carbon sphere with embedded Fe3O4 nanoparticles is fabricated as sulfur host for Li–S batteries. The high catalytic activity of Fe3O4 can accelerate the redox conversion of polysulfide, facilitating the reaction kinetics.
