AbstractWe report the fabrication and characterization of the self-assembled structure of tri-n-octylphosphine oxide (TOPO)-capped CdSe nanocrystals in binary polymer phase separated films of polystyrene (PS), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP). These structures are formed via demixing of CdSe nanocrystals and binary polymer during spin coating. The nanocrystals preferentially segregate to the PS-rich phase in phase separated PS/PMMA and to the P2VP-rich phase in phase separated PS/P2VP, as shown by optical microscopy and photoluminescence images. For CdSe/PS/PMMA, we attribute the driving force for CdSe segregating to the PS-rich domain to the stronger attractive interaction of TOPO on PS with respect to PMMA due to polarity, and in the case of CdSe/PS/P2VP, segregating to the P2VP-rich domain to the interaction such as coordinate bonds being formed between pyridine groups and surface Cd atoms.

The precursor samarium nickelate or samarium-neodimium nickelate films were fabricated by a spin coating method using Sm-Ni or Nd-Sm-Ni aqueous solutions, and SmNiO3 and Nd0.5Sm0.5NiO3 films were obtained by heat-treatment of the precursor films at 750 °C in oxygen atmosphere. The resulting SmNiO3 and Nd0.5Sm0.5NiO3 films showed an electrical transition with the transition temperatures of 124.0 and 32.5 °C, respectively. Both of the films showed optical thermochromic properties at the above mentioned transition temperatures.

Polymer blends are of increasing interest in the field of surface technology because they can be used to change or tailor the properties of surfaces for special application. In most cases not only the chemical nature of the components is important for the physical properties of the blend but also the components distribution on the blend surface. This distribution is strongly dependent on the adsorption energy of the polymers onto the substrate. According to the Flory-Huggins theory, the criterion for polymer miscibility in blends is that the average interaction parameter for a binary mixture of polymers, 12, must be less than a critical value cri, which is calculated from weight-average degrees of polymerization of the two polymers [1]. This parameter also describes the difference of the interaction energies between similar and different monomers. During the spin coating process the system tries to reach a state of low energy, indicating that the substrate surface and the vapor phase influence the wetting and dewetting of the substrate by the resulting polymer films. However, one should notice that spin-coated film structure may not correspond to the equilibrium one due to the rapid solvent evaporation during the spin coating process and to solvent effects [2].

The random lasing emission from granular-surface PS:PMMA:Alq3:DCJTB blend films was investigated. By micro-phase separation of PS:PMMA:Alq3:DCJTB blend in spin-coating and solvent evaporation process, we obtained a granular-surface waveguide film with gain on glass substrates, whose period is about 200~500nm, and fluctuation is about 20nm. Pumped by THG YAG laser, a significant random laser emission was observed. Compared with the samples of glass/PMMA:Alq3:DCJTB and glass/ PS:Alq3:DCJTB prepared under the same conditions, the laser threshold decreased about 5 times, the line width at half (FWHM) reduced to 1.7nm from more than ten nm, and the quality factor of laser peak increased 7-9 times.
