Abstract Regulatory water quality limits are extended from the wastewater resource recovery facility (WRRF) to the sewer system. It is thus necessary to properly integrate those systems for the evaluation of the overall emissions to the receiving water. The integration of the sewer system and the WRRF, however, leaves us with multiple potential options to reduce these emissions. The proposed approach builds on previous research using global sensitivity analysis (GSA) as a screening method for available control handles. It considers parameter and input uncertainty to select control handles that generate large benefits even if the model differs from reality. Results from a real-life case study indicate that the three top-rated handles are comparably effective for all considered uncertainty and variability scenarios. But the results also showed that this does not apply to lower-rated handles.

AbstractA growing literature indicates that untreated wastewater from leaky sewers stands among major sources of pollution to water resources of urban systems. Despite that, the quantification and allocation of sewer exfiltration are often restricted to major pipe areas where inspection data are available. In large-scale urban models, the emission from sewer exfiltration is either neglected (particularly from private sewers) or represented by simplified fixed values, and as such its contribution to the overall urban emission remains questionable. This study proposes an extended model framework which incorporates sewer exfiltration pathway in the catchment model for a better justified pollution control and management of urban systems at a nationwide scale. Nutrient emission from urban areas is quantified by means of the Modelling of Nutrient Emissions in River Systems (MONERIS) model. Exfiltration is estimated for public and private sewers of different age groups in Germany using the verified methods at local to city scales, upscaling techniques, and expert knowledge. Results of this study suggest that the average exfiltration rate is likely to be less than 0.01 L/s per km, corresponding to approximately 1 mm/m/year of wastewater discharge to groundwater. Considering the source and age factors, the highest rate of exfiltration is defined in regions with significant proportions of public sewers older than 40 years. In regions where public sewers are mostly built after 1981, the leakage from private sewers can be up two times higher than such from public sewers. Overall, sewer exfiltration accounts for 9.8% and 17.2% of nitrate and phosphate loads from urban systems emitted to the environment, which increases to 11.2% and 19.5% in the case of no remediation scenario of projected defective sewer increases due to ageing effects. Our results provide a first harmonized quantification of potential leakage losses in urban wastewater systems at the nationwide scale and reveal the importance of rehabilitation planning of ageing sewer pipes in public and private sewer systems. The proposed model framework, which incorporates important factors for urban sewer managers, will allow further targeting the important data need for validating the approach at the regional and local scales in order to support better strategies for the long-term nutrient pollution control of large urban wastewater systems.

This article aims to encourage the interdisciplinary study of ‘languaculture,’ an approach to language and culture in which ideology, linguistic and cultural forms, as well as praxis are studied in relation to one another. An integrated analysis of the selection of linguistic and cultural elements provides insight into how these choices arise from internalized norms and values, and how people position themselves toward received categories and hegemonic ideologies. An interdisciplinary approach will stimulate a rethinking of established concepts and methods of research. It will also lead to a mutual strengthening of linguistic, sociolinguistic, and anthropological research. This contribution focuses on Limburg and the linguistic political context of this Southern-Netherlands region where people are strongly aware of their linguistic distinctiveness. The argument of the paper is based on a case study of languaculture, viz. the carnivalesque song ‘Naar Talia’ (To Italy) by the Getske Boys from the city of Heerlen.

Social Networks (SNs) bring new types of privacy risks threats for users; which developers should be aware of when designing respective services. Aiming at safeguarding users’ privacy more effectively within SNs, self-adaptive privacy preserving schemes have been developed, considered the importance of users’ social and technological context and specific privacy criteria that should be satisfied. However, under the current self-adaptive privacy approaches, the examination of users’ social landscape interrelated with their privacy perceptions and practices, is not thoroughly considered, especially as far as users’ social attributes concern. This study, aimed at elaborating this examination in depth, in order as to identify the users’ social characteristics and privacy perceptions that can affect self-adaptive privacy design, as well as to indicate self-adaptive privacy related requirements that should be satisfied for users’ protection in SNs. The study was based on an interdisciplinary research instrument, adopting constructs and metrics from both sociological and privacy literature. The results of the survey lead to a pilot taxonomic analysis for self-adaptive privacy within SNs and to the proposal of specific privacy related requirements that should be considered for this domain. For further establishing of our interdisciplinary approach, a case study scenario was formulated, which underlines the importance of the identified self-adaptive privacy related requirements. In this regard, the study provides further insight for the development of the behavioral models that will enhance the optimal design of self-adaptive privacy preserving schemes in SNs, as well as designers to support the principle of PbD from a technical perspective.

С момента перехода государства на новую экономическую модель развития социально значимые отрасли остались в тени «локомотивов» экономического развития – топливно-энергетического и минерально-сырьевого комплексов. Отрасли народного хозяйства, не имеющие коммерческого интереса, отмирали полностью или сжимались до размеров возможной минимальной окупаемости. Данные изменения затронули и отрасль жилищно-коммунального хозяйства, в частности водопроводно-канализационное хозяйство. Катастрофическое состояние отрасли в настоящее время требует особого внимания и особых решений со стороны всех участвующих и заинтересованных сторон: органов государственной и муниципальной власти, органов контроля и надзора, операторов систем водопроводно-канализационного хозяйства, коммерческих организаций, высшей школы, профильного научного сообщества и населения. Одна из базовых отраслей народного хозяйства не должна находиться в таком состоянии и, несмотря на отсутствие экономической стабильности, необходимо сделать ее восстановление приоритетной государственной задачей, направив на это максимальные материальные и интеллектуальные ресурсы страны. Приведен пример концессионного соглашения, которое иллюстрирует один из возможных путей продления ресурса городского канализационного хозяйства с предельным износом. Since the transition of Russian Federation to a new economic model of development, socially significant industries have remained in the shadow of the «locomotives» of the economic development, i. e., the fuel and energy and mineral resource sectors. Branches of the national economy that had no commercial interest died out completely or shrank to the size of a possible minimum payback. These changes also affected the housing and utilities sector, in particular, the water supply and wastewater disposal systems. The catastrophic state of the industry currently requires special attention and special decisions on the part of all the stake holders: the state and municipal authorities, control and supervision bodies, operators of water and wastewater utilities, commercial organizations, higher education, the relevant scientific community and population. One of the basic sectors of the national economy should not be in such a state and, despite the lack of the economic stability, its restoration should be a priority state task directing the maximum material and intellectual resources of the country. An example of a concession agreement is given that can be a possible way to extend the resource of an urban wastewater disposal system with a wear limit.

This work was aimed at performing an analysis of the integrated urban wastewater system (catchment area, sewer, WWTP, receiving water). It focused on analysing the substance fluxes going through the system to identify critical pathways of pollution, as well as assessing the effectiveness of energy consumption and operational/capital costs. Two different approaches were adopted in the study to analyse urban wastewater systems of diverse characteristics. In the first approach a wide ranged analysis of a system at river basin scale is applied. The Nete river basin in Belgium, a tributary of the Schelde, was analysed through the 29 sewer catchments constituting the basin. In the second approach a more detailed methodology was developed to separately analyse two urban wastewater systems situated within the Ruhr basin (Germany) on a river stretch scale. The paper mainly focuses on the description of the method applied. Only the most important results are presented. The main outcomes of these studies are: the identification of stressors on the receiving water bodies, an extensive benchmarking of wastewater systems, and the evidence of the scale dependency of results in such studies.

This essay explores the interdisciplinary origins and historiography of early North American scholars approaching territoriality – political control of territory – from an indigenous perspective in their works. Using the Ndé (Apaches) as a case study, it reveals how adopting an interdisciplinary approach that addresses territoriality from multiple perspectives can further our understanding of cultural contestation across the continent and hemisphere by highlighting the ways indigenous peoples negotiated, resisted, and adapted to European conquest.

This paper presents and discusses the application of a novel energy balance scheme for assessing energy efficiency in wastewater systems. The energy balance is demonstrated with a Portuguese real-life case study, using mathematical modelling to estimate the different energy components and to compute two energy efficiency indices. The total inflow intrinsic energy can represent a significant amount (>95%) of the total energy used in systems mainly composed of gravity sewers. The total input energy is significantly (four-times) higher in the wet season than in the dry season, mostly due to undue inflows (e.g., direct rainfall and infiltration). The potential for energy recovery strongly depends on the available head and flow rate at the delivery point, being 0.01 kWh/m3 in the current case, with a project payback period of 4 years. The energy balance components and the respective energy efficiency indices strongly depend on the considered reference elevation. Thus, a unique regional reference elevation is recommended in the calculations.
