Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is an ancient medical system with a unique cultural background. Nowadays, more and more Western countries due to its therapeutic efficacy are accepting it. However, safety and clear pharmacological action mechanisms of TCM are still uncertain. Due to the potential application of TCM in healthcare, it is necessary to construct a scientific evaluation system with TCM characteristics and benchmark the difference from the standard of Western medicine. Model organisms have played an important role in the understanding of basic biological processes. It is easier to be studied in certain research aspects and to obtain the information of other species. Despite the controversy over suitable syndrome animal model under TCM theoretical guide, it is unquestionable that many model organisms should be used in the studies of TCM modernization, which will bring modern scientific standards into mysterious ancient Chinese medicine. In this review, we aim to summarize the utilization of model organisms in the construction of TCM syndrome model and highlight the relevance of modern medicine with TCM syndrome animal model. It will serve as the foundation for further research of model organisms and for its application in TCM syndrome model.

Objectives. We investigated the cognition and application of the “Evaluation System of Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinical Evidence” among populations with disparate backgrounds. Methods. We performed an online survey using a self-designed questionnaire. Results. Of 307 returned questionnaires, 284 were noted to be valid, and the effective recovery rate was 92.5%. Our analyses showed that the respondents demonstrated a better understanding of clinical evidence-based evaluation systems and that they used these occasionally. For both the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) and the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) evidence evaluation systems, the respondents generally showed poor overall understanding, rendering the systems impractical. Among the respondents who were exposed to the existing evidence evaluation system for TCM. More than 70% of the respondents remarked that it was difficult to obtain high-quality evidence using any existing methods to evaluate TCM clinical evidence, that there was a lack of clear evaluation criteria, and that it was difficult to grasp the evaluation process. Conclusions. The evaluation systems of TCM clinical evidence have gained a certain degree of recognition among practitioners, who show a great willingness to use it, but practical applications are limited. In addition, it is also expected that an evaluation system would be more in line with the clinical characteristics of TCM.

Context With the increasing use of velvet antlers (VA) as functional food or traditional Chinese medicine, the quality control has become more and more important. Aims Establish an effective method to provide a way of distinguishing VA from other types of deer tissue. Methods In the present study, 18 samples from three types of deer tissue were analysed on the basis of high-performance liquid chromatography, and a chromatogram of each sample was obtained. Then, these chromatograms were processed using the similarity evaluation system for chromatographic fingerprints of traditional Chinese medicine, to give the fingerprints of three deer tissues. The chemometric methods were used to analyse the fingerprint results, so as to identify the three types of deer tissue. Key results Shared peaks of VA, venison and deer bone were identified using similarity evaluation system. The results showed that, in total, 19 peaks were identified among these three types of deer tissue. Compared with venison, VA lacked three peaks (Numbers 3, 4 and 17); compared with deer bone, VA had six extra peaks (Numbers 2, 5, 8, 9, 14 and 19). The results of chemometric methods showed that different tissue samples could be classified into three categories by using both cluster analysis and principal component analysis. After principal component analysis and partial least-square discrimination analysis, seven peaks were selected, which had significant influence on the classification of VA, venison and deer bone. Conclusions The high-performance liquid-chromatography fingerprints in combination with chemometric methods can be used to effectively distinguish three deer tissue types, namely, VA, venison and deer bone. Implications We believe the method offers a useful tool much needed in the current Chinese velvet market.

Objective: To establish a HPLC fingerprints evaluation method for Angelica Sinensis Radix (ASR) based on traditional decoction process of Ancient Classical Prescriptions of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ACPTCM). Methods: The fingerprints of 10 batches of ASR were further evaluated by chemometrics methods. The similarity analyzed with “Similarity Evaluation System for Chromatographic Fingerprint of Traditional Chinese Medicine 2004A,” and hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA) were performed by SPSS (version 22.0, SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Results: There were 12 common peaks, and the similarity degrees of 10 batches of samples were more than 0.923 and showed that all the samples from different origins were of good consistency. The samples were divided into 4 clusters by HCA. The results of PCA showed that the 3 factors were chosen, the quality of samples could be evaluated basically. The comprehensive score results show that the ASR with Lot.Nos.DG-18007, DG-18008 in Weiyuan County, Gansu and DG-18009 produced in Minle County, Gansu Province rank among the top 3 in all samples. Conclusions: These results demonstrated that the combination of HPLC chromatographic fingerprint and chemometrics offers an efficient and reliable approach for quality evaluation of ASR from different sources as Ancient Classical Prescriptions ingredients.

The evaluation system of constitution in Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) is designed by relational-like data base Access, based on interface, function buttons, and menu, designed by VBA language. The system links to office word in order to achieve the automation of the issuance of constitution assessment and healthcare programmes. The design includes four parts, they are, overall design, interface design, evaluation test design and constitution report design. This system shows some advantages, such as simple operation, good stability, low requirements of equipment configuration, vividly visual interface. By analysing information on examinees' lives, their constitutions can accurately be identified, and the reports of the constitutions can be issued. Besides, relative healthcare suggestions are also attached. The convenience of the process is suitable for outpatient services, physical examination centers, and family health, and among which the system can be popularized.

IntroductionIt is difficult to generalize health technology assessment in the field of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The lack of an outcomes evaluation system based on TCM theory is one of the important reasons. Studies conducted in menstruating women have shown that the prevalence of primary dysmenorrhea varies from 45 to 95 percent. As a debilitating condition for many women, dysmenorrhea is one of the leading causes of absenteeism from school or work, which has a negative effect on quality of life (QoL). TCM has obvious advantages in treating dysmenorrhea. This study aimed to develop a dysmenorrhea QoL scale based on TCM theory.MethodsWe conducted focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with TCM gynecologists and patients, and adapted items from previously published scales. We generated an initial pool of forty-one items with eight domains. The Delphi method was used for preliminary item selection. Then, we administered the items to a sample of adolescent girls (n = 200). The distribution of survey items, discrete trend, factor analysis, correlation coefficient, and Cronbach's α coefficient were used to select items.ResultsAfter two rounds of expert consultation, a total of thirty items were included in the dysmenorrhea QoL scale. And after sample analysis, four items' frequency distribution was skewed, five items' standard deviation (SD) was <0.8, four items' factor loading was <0.4, five items' score correlation coefficient with a related domain was <0.4, and three items’ deletion would cause their domain's Cronbach's α coefficient increased. The items were deleted when they met more than two above standards.ConclusionsA total of twenty items with eight domains were included in the dysmenorrhea QoL scale. The methods to select the dysmenorrhea QoL scale items based on TCM theory were preferable. Given the paucity of research in this area, this new dysmenorrhea QoL scale may provide opportunities for patient-reported outcome evaluation in the field of TCM.

Wearable treatment equipment has become a hot topic among traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) researchers. The wearable instrument for transcutaneous electrical stimulation therapy (TEST) developed by our research team has unique advantages in treating insomnia induced by the heart disorder due to phlegm and fire (HDPF). However, the treatment efficacy of the instrument has not been verified by multi-modal data, which limits its application at home. In fact, there is no intelligent efficacy evaluation system for the home treatment of insomnia with the instrument. To make up the gap, this paper attempts to build a home efficacy multi-modal intelligent evaluation system (HEMIES) for this wearable TEST instrument, drawing on the latest technologies of medicine and informatics. Taking HDPF-induced insomnia as an example, the authors firstly set up an index system of the HEMIES for HDPF-induced insomnia, and constructed a conceptual model of the HEMIES. Next, the syndrome images of TCM were fused with the text data of modern medicine, and used to evaluate the treatment efficacy and complete the HEMIES. Finally, 33 patients with HDPF-induced insomnia were recruited to treat the disease with the wearable TEST instrument at home. The observed results show that the prediction accuracy rate of the HEMIES was as high as 90.63%, indicating that the system boasts a good prediction ability and a high value for home application. Our HEMIES realizes the objective evaluation of the home treatment efficacy of the wearable TEST instrument in the absence of TCM practitioners, and provides a reference for the efficacy research of other TCM treatment equipment in home treatment.

In order to optimize the allocation of health resources and promote the development of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), this research employs the China Health Statistics Yearbook 2018 to collect relevant data on TCM hospitals in 2017, and the DEA method is used to construct a BCC model for the evaluation of service efficiency of these hospitals in 30 provinces (including autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government) across the country. It is found that TCM hospitals in non-effective DEA provinces are not operating efficiently, with excessive investment in institutions, beds, and health staff, and insufficient output of visits, bed utilization, and the average length of stay. Given this, attention to promoting the service capacity and efficiency of TCM hospitals should be paid on the following aspects: scientific allocation of health resource, strengthened external policy control, improved internal management of hospitals, optimized characteristic services and establishment of scientific evaluation system.
