We compute the exact effective string vacuum backgrounds of the level k=81/19 SU(2,1)/U(1) coset model. A compact SU(2) isometry present in this seven-dimensional solution allows one to interpret it after compactification as a four-dimensional non-Abelian SU(2) charged instanton with a singular submanifold and an SO(3) × U(1) isometry. The semiclassical backgrounds, solutions of the type II strings, present similar characteristics

Abstract In this work we study ten-dimensional solutions to type IIA string theory of the form AdS4 × X6 which contain orientifold planes and preserve $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 1 supersymmetry. In particular, we consider solutions which exhibit some key features of the four-dimensional DGKT proposal for compactifications on Calabi-Yau manifolds with fluxes, and in this sense may be considered their ten-dimensional uplifts. We focus on the supersymmetry equations and Bianchi identities, and find solutions to these that are valid at the two-derivative level and at first order in an expansion parameter which is related to the AdS cosmological constant. This family of solutions is such that the background metric is deformed from the Ricci-flat one to one exhibiting SU(3) × SU(3)-structure, and dilaton gradients and warp factors are induced.

Abstract We explore 6d (1, 0) superconformal field theories with SU(3) and SU(2) gauge symmetries which cascade after Higgsing to the E-string theory on a single M5 near an E8 wall. Specifically, we study the 2d $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (0, 4) gauge theories which describe self-dual strings of these 6d theories. The self-dual strings can be also viewed as instanton string solitons of 6d Yang-Mills theories. We find the 2d anomaly-free gauge theories for self-dual strings, amending the naive ADHM gauge theories which are anomalous, and calculate their elliptic genera. While these 2d theories respect the flavor symmetry of each 6d SCFT only partially, their elliptic genera manifest the symmetry fully as these functions as BPS index are invariant in strongly coupled IR limit. Our consistent 2d (0, 4) gauge theories also provide new insights on the non-linear sigma models for the instanton strings, providing novel UV completions of the small instanton singularities. Finally, we construct new 2d quiver gauge theories for the self-dual strings in 6d E-string theory for multiple M5-branes probing the E8 wall, and find their fully refined elliptic genera.

Supersymmetric extreme dyonic black holes of toroidally compactified heterotic or type-II string theory can be viewed as lower-dimensional images of solitonic strings wound around a compact dimension. We consider conformal sigma models which describe string configurations corresponding to various extreme dyonic black holes in four and five dimensions. These conformal models have regular short-distance region equivalent to a WZW theory with level proportional to magnetic charges. Arguments are presented suggesting a universal relation between the black hole entropy (area) and the statistical entropy of BPS-saturated oscillation states of solitonic string.

We study the cohomological physics of fivebranes in type II and heterotic string theory. We give an interpretation of the one-loop term in type IIA, which involves the first and second Pontrjagin classes of spacetime, in terms of obstructions to having bundles with certain structure groups. Using a generalization of the Green–Schwarz anomaly cancellation in heterotic string theory which demands the target space to have a String structure, we observe that the "magnetic dual" version of the anomaly cancellation condition can be read as a higher analog of String structure, which we call Fivebrane structure. This involves lifts of orthogonal and unitary structures through higher connected covers which are not just 3- but even 7-connected. We discuss the topological obstructions to the existence of Fivebrane structures. The dual version of the anomaly cancellation points to a relation of string and Fivebrane structures under electric-magnetic duality.
